Margot Robbie has surprised fans by discreetly taking her husband’s name.
In a new business listing available via the U.K. government’s Companies House, Robbie is named as “Margot Elise Ackerley” on the registry for LuckyChap Entertainment, the production company she runs with husband Tom Ackerley.
The name change comes ahead of her 10th wedding anniversary with Ackerley this December. In previous documentation, the Barbie star was named as Margot Elise Robbie.
In recent years, there has been speculation that the actor had taken Acklerly’s name in her personal life, while continuing to use Robbie in her professional life. She was listed as Margot Robbie in the credits for her latest project, Sterling Point, the coming-of-age drama she co-produced through LuckyChap Entertainment.
Some fans of Robbie have been shocked at the name change, as one person wrote online: “It doesn’t have the same ring to it.”
Another person suggested that taking her husband’s name somehow contradicted the feminist values in her film Barbie, writing on X: “Barbie would never have done that… Barbie would never take a man’s last name.”
Others were more complimentary, as one person wrote: “Margot Ackerley sounds really elegant.”
“Margot Ackerley sounds like a Victorian novelist name and I mean that as the highest compliment,” commented another.
“Wishing them both nothing but the best,” added another fan.
Robbie met her husband on the set of the World War II drama Suite Française in 2013. Robbie was an actor on the rise at the time, having enjoyed success as a soap star playing Donna Freedman in Neighbours. Ackerley, who is from Guildford, England, was working on the film as an assistant director.
They began dating and founded LuckyChap Entertainment together a year later. The production company has since been behind films such as I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Barbie, Saltburn and Wuthering Heights.
The couple has kept their relationship out of the spotlight and married in a private ceremony in Byron Bay, Australia, in December 2016. Their son was born in October 2024.
“[We spend] 24 hours a day [together],” Ackerley previously told The Sunday Times about how their personal and professional lives cross over.
“It’s seamless. We don’t have a toggle on, toggle off. It’s all become one thing,” he said.
Asked whether they ever have arguments at home, Ackerley said the topic that he and Robbie clash over is chocolate cookies – specifically “whether Tim Tams or Penguins are better”.
