Josh Brolin shares the key to his 12 years of sobriety

Josh Brolin has shared the secret to maintaining his 12 years of sobriety.

Speaking in a new interview touching on his career and sobriety journey, Brolin — currently starring in the new film Whalefall — shared the constant that keeps him on track.

“I do a meeting every morning at 6 a.m. on Zoom,” the 58-year-old told The Telegraph in an interview published Saturday.

“Drinking got boring in the end,” he continued. “I woke up on the sidewalk outside my house, yet again, and it felt like a fork in the road. Which way was I going to go for the rest of my life?”

Brolin added: “I love being sober. I’m having way more fun now than I ever did drinking, and I never end up in jail, which is a real bonus.”

The No Country for Old Men star recalled his journey to sobriety, including an incident when he was 19 years old in which he assaulted six police officers.

“I was drunk and thought I was Bruce Lee,” he told the publication. “The court offered to reduce the sentence if I went to rehab and got sober, so that’s what I did. I ended up doing a few months in jail and then living in a halfway house with 15 other guys.”

Brolin told The Independent last year that he went into rehab and joined Alcoholics Anonymous after a particularly challenging 2013, which culminated with an incident that left him on the pavement outside his house.

“I shouldn’t have ended up where I ended up,” said Brolin. “And that doesn’t mean successful; it just means survived.”

Brolin got his start in the Steven Spielberg-produced 1985 film, The Goonies. He’s since appeared in dozens of films and television series including Milk, Sicario and the Dune films, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, in which he played the villainous Thanos.

But he told The Independent that one experience required a transformation that left him full of panic.

The actor portrayed Cable, a cybernetic soldier from the future, in the 2018 superhero sequel Deadpool 2, for which he wore heavy prosthetic makeup to create the character’s distinctive facial scar, and he claimed the application was so intense that “most people can’t do it.”

“They do this thing – it’s a practical thing where they cover your head in clay and all that and then it hardens to get an impression of your head and your face,” he said.

“When they do it, it gets hot and it hardens and then slowly you start to lose your hearing. I remember I had a pad and I wrote at one point, ‘Mild panic.’ I remember hearing a voice – even though it was close, it sounded really far away, and it was like, ‘You’re gonna be fine,’ and they’re holding your hand and all that kind of stuff.”
