In a sweet discovery, astronomers find sugar lurking in the space between stars

NEW YORK — NEW YORK (AP) — The space between stars just got a little sweeter.

Astronomers have detected a type of sugar in space that’s also found in raspberries and self-tanners. The sugar, called erythrulose, lurks in what’s called the interstellar medium: thin clouds of gas and dust littered between stars.

Sugar does more than sweeten tea and powder doughnuts. Different varieties fuel our cells and even make up DNA. Scientists are itching to know how sugars form because they’re a key ingredient for life as we know it.

Using two dish-shaped radio telescopes in Spain, researchers collected data from a large gas cloud near the center of the Milky Way. They identified the sugar in gas form by comparing telescope signals to samples in the lab. It’s the latest kind of sugar detected in space — in a region crossed by NASA’s twin Voyager, the farthest spacecraft to ever travel from Earth.

The results were published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Scientists have found interesting chemistry in our galaxy, including building blocks for genetic material and parts of the cell. They spotted a cousin to table sugar near the center of the Milky Way about 25 years ago, and black grains from asteroid Bennu retrieved by NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft yielded other sugars, including a key DNA ingredient.

The latest sugar isn’t essential for life, but can easily convert to a form that’s thought to be crucial to kick-starting life on Earth. And it’s one of the most complex sugars spotted so far, said astrophysicist Erika Hamden with the University of Arizona.

It’s “a pristine example of the stuff that’s just floating out in the galaxy,” said Hamden, who had no role in the new research.

These interstellar investigations are all about understanding how life got started. Did faraway comets or space rocks deliver the essential ingredients to us? Or were the essential components already here that eventually gave rise to our solar system?

The new sugar lends evidence to the latter theory. Researchers want to look for more sugars in space and learn about how they convert to different forms.

Finding them in one spot means they’re likely also hiding in distant corners of the galaxy along with other important bits, said study author Izaskun Jiménez-Serra, an astrophysicist at the Center for Astrobiology in Spain.

“The key ingredients for the origin of life could be present in other regions across the galaxy, opening the possibility for life to develop elsewhere in the universe,” Jiménez-Serra said.

In 2023, CM Punk came back to WWE at the end of the show and shocked the entire sports world. Randy Orton also made his in-ring return during the match. Last year, a mystery attacker interrupted the WarGames match and gave the win to The Vision and company.

It’s unclear what is in the cards right now for the 40th edition of the event.

“We are proud to be able to help bring one of the world’s premier entertainment brands to Houston for what promises to be an unforgettable holiday weekend,” said Michael Heckman, President and CEO of Houston First, which partnered with WWE to bring the event back to Houston.

UK pins string of antisemitic attacks on Iran-linked group, bans IRGC

UK pins string of antisemitic attacks on Iran-linked group, bans IRGC

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The United Kingdom on Monday blamed an Iran-linked proxy group for a string of antisemitic arson attacks targeting British Jewish sites, prompting the government to ban Tehran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and impose sweeping new powers to crack down on foreign-backed sabotage.

British officials said the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right (IMCR) publicly claimed responsibility for seven attacks this year targeting Jewish and Israeli-linked locations, as well as a Persian-language media outlet critical of Iran’s government. According to the U.K. government, members of the IRGC’s elite Qods Force were “almost certainly” directing the group’s operations across Europe.

The attacks included fires at synagogues, Jewish charity ambulances and other Jewish community sites in London. No injuries were reported.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the new measures send a clear message to foreign adversaries seeking to sow violence.

“We will never let Britain be a playground for states who want to spread fear, division and violence on our streets,” Starmer said. “Anyone acting on behalf of those who threaten our national security should be in no doubt that there is no place for you in Britain.”

If Parliament approves the designations later this week, anyone carrying out acts of sabotage — including arson — on behalf of the IRGC, IMCR or Russia’s GRU Volunteer Corps could face life imprisonment. Supporting or assisting the groups could carry prison sentences of up to 14 years.

The British government said the new authorities, created under the National Security (State Threats) Act 2026, will make it easier for prosecutors to secure convictions because they will no longer have to prove a direct foreign government connection in every case.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood accused both Tehran and Moscow of relying on criminal proxies to conduct hostile operations inside the United Kingdom.

“Iran and Russia are using proxies and thugs to do their dirty work on our shores,” Mahmood said. “I have rapidly designated three groups so those working for them will be tracked down and put behind bars.”

The government said IMCR emerged online earlier this year and has also claimed responsibility for attacks on synagogues in Belgium and the Netherlands. British intelligence officials say Iran-backed proxy groups have increasingly recruited members of criminal organizations to carry out sabotage, intimidation and physical attacks across Europe, often targeting Jewish communities and Iranian dissidents.

According to the U.K., MI5 identified at least 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots against individuals in Britain over the past year. The government has already sanctioned more than 550 Iranian-linked individuals and entities and has pledged £250 million ($334,662,500) over three years to strengthen security for Jewish communities, including increased protection for synagogues, schools and community centers.

Britain also designated Russia’s GRU Volunteer Corps, saying the group acts as a proxy for Russian military intelligence by recruiting individuals online to conduct sabotage, arson and other hostile operations.

The crackdown comes just weeks after two Romanian men were sentenced to prison for stabbing a journalist working for a Persian-language television station in London, an attack a British judge said was carried out on behalf of the Iranian state.

NBC host shares health update after announcing cancer diagnosis on air

NBC’s Sara Gore has shared a positive health update months after revealing her breast cancer diagnosis.

During an April edition of New York Live, the Emmy-winning host, 50, told viewers she would be stepping away to undergo treatment and surgery.

Now, just two months later, Gore said she is “currently cancer-free.

“I’m doing really well. Let’s get that out of the way,” she wrote Sunday on Instagram, alongside a picture of her sitting outside in front of a flower vine. She said that she is “still in the reconstruction phase and will be for months.”

“It’s truly a journey. Healing has taken some time, but every week I’ve felt a little more like me again,” Gore continued.

Expressing gratitude to friends, followers and fans for “every thoughtful gesture that came my way,” Gore said, “I felt EVERY bit of it. You carried me through some really hard days, and I’ll never forget your kindness.

“I’ll be back on New York Live and Open House soon, and I honestly can’t wait,” she continued. “Until then, I’m soaking up these last few slow mornings appreciating all the moments that usually move by too fast to notice. It’s good to be here. I love you all.”

Gore has been the face of NBC’s real estate and design show, Open House, and lifestyle show, New York Live, since 2007. In 2024, she launched NYL: Prime Time Edition.

For several years, she has also hosted the network’s First Look Live on the Red Carpet Specials for the Golden Globes, Emmy Awards, and other live specials.

Addressing audiences live on-air in April, Gore said: “It just felt right to tell you myself, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery. If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying.”

She noted that her mom and sister had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, but the news still came as a shock. “I always knew I was high-risk. I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready,” Gore said.

“For some reason, even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right, it is an emotional blow,” she continued. “I wasn’t ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung. It’s stinging right now.”

She promised that she would “come back better than ever, and I’m going to see you on the other side of this,” thanking her NBC colleagues for “all you’ve done.”

Right behind them are Arsenal, whose players have clocked 4,285 minutes, the second highest total in the league.

William Saliba has played 450 minutes for France, Declan Rice 386 for England, Noni Madueke 288, Bukayo Saka 267, Mikel Merino 136 and Eberechi Eze 130.

Brentford are among the teams represented least, with slightly more than 600 minutes.

Emiliano Martinez (600) and Jordan Pickford (570) lead all Premier League players for minutes, though goalkeepers naturally face different physical demands from outfield players.

Ukrainian prime minister resigns in Zelenskyy shake-up

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Ukraine’s wartime government is getting another shake-up after Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down Sunday, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying he has offered her a “new, important” role as he reshapes his administration during the ongoing war with Russia.

Svyrydenko announced her resignation in a statement on social media, saying she was “proud to have had the honor of leading the government during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s modern history.” She said she had discussed “next steps” with Zelenskyy, but did not disclose what her next position would be.

“I remain ready to serve the Ukrainian state and carry out every task aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position, defending our national interests and bringing a just peace closer,” Svyrydenko wrote.

HOUSE REPUBLICAN DON BACON SAYS HE WANTS ‘PARIAH STATE’ RUSSIA BOOTED FROM UN SECURITY COUNCIL

Zelenskyy, who has remained in office under martial law because wartime elections are prohibited, framed the move as part of a broader shift in Ukraine’s governing strategy.

“Ukraine is changing its political strategy,” Zelenskyy wrote in a social media post, adding that he had offered Svyrydenko the chance to lead “a new, important area” in Ukraine’s relations with a key international partner.

The Ukrainian president said each major area of foreign policy would be assigned to an experienced official responsible for carrying out agreements reached with foreign leaders and advancing the interests of the Ukrainian people. He also announced planned changes to the country’s top law enforcement leadership, though he did not immediately provide additional details.

The reshuffle marks the fourth major reorganization of Zelenskyy’s government since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, reflecting the president’s repeated efforts to inject new momentum into his wartime administration.

Svyrydenko, who previously served as Ukraine’s economy minister, was appointed prime minister in July 2025 at age 39 after playing a key role in negotiating a minerals agreement between Ukraine and the United States. The deal was widely viewed as a way to strengthen U.S. economic interests in Ukraine while reinforcing Washington’s long-term commitment to the country’s security.

“My kids don’t have phones. It’s okay being bored…”: Why Novak Djokovic’s approach is an important lesson for modern parents

Every parent has heard it at least once. “I’m bored.” And usually, the response is the same. Someone hands over a phone. A cartoon is switched on. A tablet appears. Within seconds, the complaint is gone. But what if boredom isn’t the problem? What if it’s actually something children need more of?
That’s the idea tennis legend Novak Djokovic touched on in a recent podcast, talking about raising his two children. The 24-time Grand Slam champion shared a way of thinking about parenting that feels almost too simple for a world where kids are entertained nonstop.

It wasn’t about strict rules or some clever technique. It was about letting

kids slow down, sit with their own thoughts, and find their own creativity instead of automatically reaching for a screen. For many modern parents, it is an idea worth reflecting on. (Image Credit : Jelena Djokovic/Instagram)

Heel Turn: 2 major title changes, ‘Hangman’ returns, goodbye Sheamus and more from pro wrestling last week

0
Heel Turn: 2 major title changes, ‘Hangman’ returns, goodbye Sheamus and more from pro wrestling last week

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

It was a major week in professional wrestling that is only usually scene after a premium live event or a pay-per-view. This week, WWE and All Elite Wrestling (AEW) saw major championship changes at the top of their respective rosters as both companies inch their way to their marquee events – SummerSlam and All In.

CM Punk returned to WWE programming on “Monday Night Raw” and was the replacement in the Undisputed WWE Championship match against Sami Zayn. Cody Rhodes was set to be in the match until he was attacked by Gunther. Zayn thought he was in the clear until Raw general manager Adam Pearce told Zayn he had a replacement. Punk showed up and the crowd in Chicago was immediately sent into a frenzy.

Punk and Zayn put on one of the better TV matches of the year for WWE. In the end, it was Punk who captured the Undisputed WWE Championship and ended Zayn’s short-lived reign as champion after nine days. Later in the week, Punk and Rhodes were booked for a title match at SummerSlam but first will have to team together to take on Zayn and Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in New York City.

AEW’s “Dynamite” featured MJF trying to defend his AEW World Championship against Kenny Omega. If Omega lost the match, he would no longer be able to compete for the title. It was a similar stipulation that Rhodes dealt with when he was in AEW and that “Hangman” Adam Page had in his own match against MJF earlier this year, which he lost.

AEW routinely showcases pay-per-view-level main events on “Dynamite” and Wednesday’s title bout was no different. MJF and Omega showcased their elite talents and went above and beyond to make the title mean something. MJF went crashing through the announce table and tried to use the Dynamite Diamond Ring to cheat his way to another victory.

KENNY OMEGA CAPTURES AEW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN EPIC MATCH OVER MJF

Will Ospreay, who is guaranteed a title match at All In, stepped in to take the ring away from MJF before he could use it but nearly cost Omega the title altogether. MJF hit Omega with a low blow and the title as the referee was trying to kick Ospreay out of the ring area. However, Omega kicked out when the referee only counted to one.

The Florida crowed was electric. MJF, seemingly battling through a knee injury, did everything he could to keep Omega down, but to no avail. Omega hit MJF with a few V-triggers and a One-Winged Angel to finally put MJF away. He captured the championship and began his second reign as AEW world champion.

There are many unknowns in pro wrestling despite the scripted nature of the shows and events. You never know who is going to return, you never know who his going to be on the shelf and you never know who is really going to win when it’s all said and done.

What we do know right now is that August will begin and end spectacularly. SummerSlam and All In are shaping up to be must-watch events. Each event have been slower builds than what most fans are used to, but everyone can expect high-level drama and intrigue going into each one. Let’s not discount that fact as the days and weeks go by.

“Hangman” Adam Page returns on “Collision”

“Hangman” Adam Page made his return to AEW programming after being away for months following his AEW World Championship loss to MJF earlier this year. Dressed in a black suit jacket, Page made his way down the entrance ramp to a raucous crowd.

He opened up about dealing with cervical radiculopathy, which has kept him out of the ring for nearly four months. He talked about his gardening hobby and planting seeds and told the crowd he wanted to plant one more seed. He recalled putting his chance at ever going for the AEW world title again against MJF and losing the match.

Page vowed he would be a “man of my word.”

“I know the stipulation, it doesn’t live signed in ink on a contract filed away in a filing cabinet somewhere, but it does live in me. And I wanted to let you know that I intend to be a man of my word,” he said. “I will never challenge for the All Elite Wrestling men’s world championship again.”

He suggested he took inspiration from Omega’s title win and that he sees “miles and miles of empty track” before him. He called out TNT champion Kevin Knight, national champion Mark Davis, continental champion Jon Moxley and international champion Kyle Fletcher.

“I’m going to have to find something else to do and you bet you’re a– I will.”

Welcome back, Page.

Sheamus says farewell to WWE

Sheamus made his WWE debut in 2009 – first appearing on ECW and later Raw. He immediately became a formidable challenger for John Cena and stunningly captured the WWE Championship against him at TLC in December of that year.

Man, how time flies.

Sheamus would become a four-time WWE champion, three-time United States champion, five time tag team champion and the winner of the King of the Ring, Money in the Bank and Royal Rumble. In the latter years of his career, he would be hampered by injuries but did get one final moment with Cena in the ring at Madison Square Garden before Cena finally retired.

Reports surfaced during the week that Sheamus’ contract would expiring and that he would be leaving the company. He seemingly confirmed the reports when he changed his social media profiles to his real name, Stephen Farrelly, and fired off an outgoing message to fans.

“Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Banger after Burger after Banger after Banger after Banger after,” he wrote on X, “slán mo WWE chaired.”

It’s unclear if this will be the end of the road in professional wrestling for the 48-year-old Irishman. But there will certainly be tremendous opportunities inside and outside the ring for him moving forward.

Spotlight: CM Punk and Candice LeRae’s interaction

Overall, it may lead to nothing and go largely unnoticed, but the interaction between CM Punk and Candice LeRae jumped off the screen during “Friday Night SmackDown.”

Punk finished talking to Cathy Kelley when he turned around to see LeRae and Johnny Gargano, who was still planking and not talking to anyone. Remember, Sami Zayn was the only one who Gargano seemed to be listening to – for better or worse. LeRae offered a stark reminder to Punk after he beat Zayn for the title.

“I hope you’re proud of yourself,” LeRae said. “As annoying as Sami can be, he’s the only person who didn’t give up on Johnny. He’s actually the voice of the voiceless. And as long as Sami held that title, it was hope. Hope for the real underdogs. Hope for Johnny, hope for me, and you, stole that from us. So, yeah, I hope you’re proud of yourself.”

Punk responded the only way he could.

“I am proud of myself. You had hope for a whole nine days. Good for you,” he said. “I hope you can hear me, Johnny Wrestling, because that’s who I remember. Johnny Wrestling. Not whatever this is. And you, too. Just stop whatever you’re doing and get back in the ring. Get back to doing what you two do best. Whatever this is, is not working.”

It had been quite a while since Baron Corbin had been seen in a WWE ring. But as he finished with Major League Wrestling (MLW), rumors were rampant that his return to WWE was imminent.

He made himself quite known to the roster on Friday night when he interfered in a match between Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes.

Corbin got into the ring and hit the End of Days on both Williams and Hayes. But the big question is why? Why go after both guys who were putting on a banger of a match? Was he back to challenge for the United States Championship? And what did it mean for Ricky Saints who was watching the match intently?

We’ll have to keep watching SmackDown to find out.

Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling (MLP) will hit the airwaves this week when it debuts on TSN at midnight ET on Wednesday.

Rohan Raja spoke to Fox News Digital in May about MLP and why fans should tune in.

“I remember when we ran our first show a lot of fans, me, even if you go on Twitter and even news articles would report it, the quality is like an AEW or WWE product. It’s very top notch. We have Mauro Renallo as the voice of MLP,” he said at the time. “He’s on fire and he still does a lot of stuff like Jake Paul, he did Anthony Joshua’s last boxing match, Tyson Fury’s last match. We have all these star-studded guys.

So, I feel like that’s the biggest thing where not only are they showcasing the Canadian talent but it’s showcasing everything. I feel like wrestling now, you do get glimpses of the worlds collide but I feel like we’re the promotion that’s had everyone – a taste of everything into one. With the TSN tapings and how that’s gonna go, it’s really just going to amp up what we’ve built and it’s something that you wouldn’t want to miss.”
