Economists say ‘we must act now’ on AI’s economic impact, job displacement risks


SAN FRANCISCO — Hundreds of economists say in an open letter that institutions “must act now” to address how artificial intelligence could transform the economy and could put many people out of work.

The statement released Monday was signed by top economists, along with computer scientists and some executives at tech companies including Anthropic, Google and OpenAI.

“AI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years,” says the letter organized by Stanford University’s digital economy lab. “This could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy, larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame. It could bring risks, including large-scale job displacement, as well as opportunities such as major gains in living standards.”

The letter, which has only four sentences, says leaders must “build the incentives, guardrails, and institutions needed to steer AI in a direction that complements humans and benefits society.”

The Stanford lab says the letter has so far been signed by more than 200 economists and AI researchers, including 16 winners of a Nobel Prize.

Computer scientist and AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio was among the signatories and said in a separate statement that based on the trajectory of AI development, “it is highly plausible that AI will drastically transform our economies.”

“We must be intentional and make collective, democratic choices, rather than letting market forces play out and risking leaving most citizens behind,” wrote Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal.

Tesla’s robotaxi dream has rolled into Miami. That sounds like a big moment, especially if you have ever sat in South Florida traffic and wondered whether a car could do better without a tired human behind the wheel.

For now, though, the rollout looks careful and limited. Tesla says Robotaxi service is available in limited areas of Miami, Florida as well as Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas. The Robotaxi app also shows a visual map of where rides are available based on your location.

That means Miami is now Tesla’s newest robotaxi market, but this is not a citywide launch yet. It also puts Tesla in a busy autonomous ride-hailing market where Waymo and Amazon’s Zoox are already trying to win over riders.

Why the Tesla Robotaxi Miami service area is limited

The biggest thing to know is that Tesla Robotaxi does not cover all of Miami. Tesla’s Miami geofence covers only a small slice of the metro area, mostly around West Miami and a strip toward Doral and Sweetwater. The early map leaves out downtown Miami, Miami Beach, Miami International Airport and most of Miami-Dade.

So, even though “Miami” is in the headline, your actual ride options depend on where you stand and where you want to go. If you are trying to get from Miami Beach to Brickell after dinner, Tesla Robotaxi may not help you yet. If you are inside the service zone, the app should show what is available before you book.

That limited map also tells you something about the challenge ahead. Miami is not an easy place to prove out robotaxis. Traffic moves fast, rain can hit hard and drivers do not always behave the way software might expect.

Tesla has been building toward this moment for years. CyberGuy previously covered how the Tesla Cybercab removes the steering wheel entirely, which shows how far Tesla wants to take autonomous transportation. For now, though, the Miami rollout still uses Model Y vehicles. That makes this launch another step in Tesla’s longer robotaxi push.

Tesla Robotaxi expansion is moving city by city

Tesla’s robotaxi rollout is still happening in careful stages. Austin came first, followed by Dallas and Houston. Miami now marks Tesla’s first Robotaxi market outside Texas.

CyberGuy previously reported that Tesla cleared Nevada streets for robotaxi testing, which showed the company was preparing for more markets before opening the app to more riders. Tesla has also named other planned cities, including Orlando, Tampa and Phoenix.

Tesla Robotaxi faces Waymo and Zoox in Miami

Tesla is not entering an empty market. Waymo and Amazon’s Zoox are also accelerating their autonomous vehicle efforts. CyberGuy recently covered how Waymo’s cheaper robotaxi tech could help driverless rides reach more cities faster. Zoox is also a major name to watch in this race. CyberGuy reported that Amazon’s Zoox updated its steering-wheel-free robotaxi with more rider comfort, larger cupholders and a calmer cabin design.

That competition puts pressure on Tesla. Tesla has the brand recognition and a massive base of vehicles on the road. Waymo has more experience with public driverless rides. Zoox is betting on a vehicle built from the ground up for autonomy. For you, that competition could lead to better service over time. More companies fighting for rides may mean wider coverage, better pickup spots and faster improvements.

Tesla Robotaxi safety questions remain

The safety questions are not going away anytime soon. According to a recent review of federal crash data filed with NHTSA, Tesla’s autonomous driving reports included 17 crash narratives tied to the Robotaxi program. That does not mean every reported crash points to a system failure. Still, riders should not ignore the data either.

Autonomous vehicles have to earn trust in everyday driving moments. A rough pickup, confusing stop or strange turn can make you nervous fast. CyberGuy has covered similar safety concerns across the robotaxi space, including a Waymo recall over construction-zone risk. That recall showed how work zones can challenge autonomous systems when signs, cones and lanes change quickly.

Tesla also faces broader scrutiny around Full Self-Driving behavior. CyberGuy previously reported on Tesla’s Mad Max mode in Full Self-Driving, which brought fresh debate over speed, supervision and driver-assist safety.

How to take a Tesla Robotaxi in Miami

To take a Tesla Robotaxi in Miami, you start in the Robotaxi app. Tesla says you need a mobile device to request a ride, and the ride can only be booked for you. Before you confirm, check the service area in the app. Do not assume Robotaxi covers the full city. A ride may work in one part of Miami and fail if your pickup or drop-off sits outside the current zone.

The app shows a price estimate before you confirm. During the ride, you can adjust things like climate, seat position and media through the app or the car’s touchscreen.

Also, keep your phone charged. That phone becomes a key part of booking, managing and finishing the ride.

Finally, pay attention during the trip. You may not be driving, but you should still stay aware of where the car stops and how it handles the ride.

Tesla Robotaxi arriving in Miami is no doubt a big headline, but the fine print is important too. I would not treat this as a full Miami transportation option yet. The service area is limited, major destinations are missing and safety questions remain part of the story. That does not kill the excitement. It simply means Tesla still has to prove that Robotaxi can work beyond a small map. I like that Tesla is expanding beyond Texas. I can also see why people would want to try this. But for now, I would call this a significant step with a lot to prove.

In a sweet discovery, astronomers find sugar lurking in the space between stars


NEW YORK — NEW YORK (AP) — The space between stars just got a little sweeter.

Astronomers have detected a type of sugar in space that’s also found in raspberries and self-tanners. The sugar, called erythrulose, lurks in what’s called the interstellar medium: thin clouds of gas and dust littered between stars.

Sugar does more than sweeten tea and powder doughnuts. Different varieties fuel our cells and even make up DNA. Scientists are itching to know how sugars form because they’re a key ingredient for life as we know it.

Using two dish-shaped radio telescopes in Spain, researchers collected data from a large gas cloud near the center of the Milky Way. They identified the sugar in gas form by comparing telescope signals to samples in the lab. It’s the latest kind of sugar detected in space — in a region crossed by NASA’s twin Voyager, the farthest spacecraft to ever travel from Earth.

The results were published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Scientists have found interesting chemistry in our galaxy, including building blocks for genetic material and parts of the cell. They spotted a cousin to table sugar near the center of the Milky Way about 25 years ago, and black grains from asteroid Bennu retrieved by NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft yielded other sugars, including a key DNA ingredient.

The latest sugar isn’t essential for life, but can easily convert to a form that’s thought to be crucial to kick-starting life on Earth. And it’s one of the most complex sugars spotted so far, said astrophysicist Erika Hamden with the University of Arizona.

It’s “a pristine example of the stuff that’s just floating out in the galaxy,” said Hamden, who had no role in the new research.

These interstellar investigations are all about understanding how life got started. Did faraway comets or space rocks deliver the essential ingredients to us? Or were the essential components already here that eventually gave rise to our solar system?

The new sugar lends evidence to the latter theory. Researchers want to look for more sugars in space and learn about how they convert to different forms.

Finding them in one spot means they’re likely also hiding in distant corners of the galaxy along with other important bits, said study author Izaskun Jiménez-Serra, an astrophysicist at the Center for Astrobiology in Spain.

“The key ingredients for the origin of life could be present in other regions across the galaxy, opening the possibility for life to develop elsewhere in the universe,” Jiménez-Serra said.

WWE will swing for the fences for the second straight year when it hosts one of its major premium live events of the year at a Major League Baseball ballpark.

The company announced on Monday that Survivor Series: WarGames will take place at Daikin Park in Houston – the home of the Astros – on Saturday, Nov. 28. It follows up the success of last year’s Survivor Series: WarGames event, which took place at Petco Park in San Diego – the home of the Padres.

“Houston is the perfect host city to celebrate this milestone chapter in Survivor Series’ storied history, and we look forward to partnering with Houston First and the Houston Astros to deliver an unforgettable event,” WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque said in a news release.

WarGames is a highly anticipated match, which has taken place yearly among wrestlers on the WWE roster since 2022. The premium live event has also seen some dramatic returns.

In 2023, CM Punk came back to WWE at the end of the show and shocked the entire sports world. Randy Orton also made his in-ring return during the match. Last year, a mystery attacker interrupted the WarGames match and gave the win to The Vision and company.

It’s unclear what is in the cards right now for the 40th edition of the event.

“We are proud to be able to help bring one of the world’s premier entertainment brands to Houston for what promises to be an unforgettable holiday weekend,” said Michael Heckman, President and CEO of Houston First, which partnered with WWE to bring the event back to Houston.

The United Kingdom on Monday blamed an Iran-linked proxy group for a string of antisemitic arson attacks targeting British Jewish sites, prompting the government to ban Tehran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and impose sweeping new powers to crack down on foreign-backed sabotage.

British officials said the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right (IMCR) publicly claimed responsibility for seven attacks this year targeting Jewish and Israeli-linked locations, as well as a Persian-language media outlet critical of Iran’s government. According to the U.K. government, members of the IRGC’s elite Qods Force were “almost certainly” directing the group’s operations across Europe.

The attacks included fires at synagogues, Jewish charity ambulances and other Jewish community sites in London. No injuries were reported.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the new measures send a clear message to foreign adversaries seeking to sow violence.

“We will never let Britain be a playground for states who want to spread fear, division and violence on our streets,” Starmer said. “Anyone acting on behalf of those who threaten our national security should be in no doubt that there is no place for you in Britain.”

If Parliament approves the designations later this week, anyone carrying out acts of sabotage — including arson — on behalf of the IRGC, IMCR or Russia’s GRU Volunteer Corps could face life imprisonment. Supporting or assisting the groups could carry prison sentences of up to 14 years.

The British government said the new authorities, created under the National Security (State Threats) Act 2026, will make it easier for prosecutors to secure convictions because they will no longer have to prove a direct foreign government connection in every case.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood accused both Tehran and Moscow of relying on criminal proxies to conduct hostile operations inside the United Kingdom.

“Iran and Russia are using proxies and thugs to do their dirty work on our shores,” Mahmood said. “I have rapidly designated three groups so those working for them will be tracked down and put behind bars.”

The government said IMCR emerged online earlier this year and has also claimed responsibility for attacks on synagogues in Belgium and the Netherlands. British intelligence officials say Iran-backed proxy groups have increasingly recruited members of criminal organizations to carry out sabotage, intimidation and physical attacks across Europe, often targeting Jewish communities and Iranian dissidents.

According to the U.K., MI5 identified at least 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots against individuals in Britain over the past year. The government has already sanctioned more than 550 Iranian-linked individuals and entities and has pledged £250 million ($334,662,500) over three years to strengthen security for Jewish communities, including increased protection for synagogues, schools and community centers.

Britain also designated Russia’s GRU Volunteer Corps, saying the group acts as a proxy for Russian military intelligence by recruiting individuals online to conduct sabotage, arson and other hostile operations.

The crackdown comes just weeks after two Romanian men were sentenced to prison for stabbing a journalist working for a Persian-language television station in London, an attack a British judge said was carried out on behalf of the Iranian state.

NBC’s Sara Gore has shared a positive health update months after revealing her breast cancer diagnosis.

During an April edition of New York Live, the Emmy-winning host, 50, told viewers she would be stepping away to undergo treatment and surgery.

Now, just two months later, Gore said she is “currently cancer-free.”

“I’m doing really well. Let’s get that out of the way,” she wrote Sunday on Instagram, alongside a picture of her sitting outside in front of a flower vine. She said that she is “still in the reconstruction phase and will be for months.”

“It’s truly a journey. Healing has taken some time, but every week I’ve felt a little more like me again,” Gore continued.

Expressing gratitude to friends, followers and fans for “every thoughtful gesture that came my way,” Gore said, “I felt EVERY bit of it. You carried me through some really hard days, and I’ll never forget your kindness.

“I’ll be back on New York Live and Open House soon, and I honestly can’t wait,” she continued. “Until then, I’m soaking up these last few slow mornings appreciating all the moments that usually move by too fast to notice. It’s good to be here. I love you all.”

Gore has been the face of NBC’s real estate and design show, Open House, and lifestyle show, New York Live, since 2007. In 2024, she launched NYL: Prime Time Edition.

For several years, she has also hosted the network’s First Look Live on the Red Carpet Specials for the Golden Globes, Emmy Awards, and other live specials.

Addressing audiences live on-air in April, Gore said: “It just felt right to tell you myself, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery. If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying.”

She noted that her mom and sister had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, but the news still came as a shock. “I always knew I was high-risk. I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready,” Gore said.

“For some reason, even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right, it is an emotional blow,” she continued. “I wasn’t ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung. It’s stinging right now.”

She promised that she would “come back better than ever, and I’m going to see you on the other side of this,” thanking her NBC colleagues for “all you’ve done.”

Ukraine’s wartime government is getting another shake-up after Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down Sunday, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying he has offered her a “new, important” role as he reshapes his administration during the ongoing war with Russia.

Svyrydenko announced her resignation in a statement on social media, saying she was “proud to have had the honor of leading the government during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s modern history.” She said she had discussed “next steps” with Zelenskyy, but did not disclose what her next position would be.

“I remain ready to serve the Ukrainian state and carry out every task aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position, defending our national interests and bringing a just peace closer,” Svyrydenko wrote.

The Ukrainian president said each major area of foreign policy would be assigned to an experienced official responsible for carrying out agreements reached with foreign leaders and advancing the interests of the Ukrainian people. He also announced planned changes to the country’s top law enforcement leadership, though he did not immediately provide additional details.

The deal was widely viewed as a way to strengthen U.S. economic interests in Ukraine while reinforcing Washington’s long-term commitment to the country’s security.
