The Kardashians are undercover tech bros – are we all doomed?

I’m looking out at the Calabasas hills from my multi-million-dollar mansion. Two delivery men are wheeling my new sculpture through the hallway, while my product developer swatches a sample from my makeup line on the back of my hand for approval. No, I’m not having a hyper-realistic dream nor have I been reincarnated as a nepo baby: I’m Kylie Jenner, or at least I’m living inside her head, thanks to the first-person content filmed on her new Meta glasses.

The end is, somewhat, nigh. Although smart glasses have been around for a while, nobody but tech bros wanted to wear them. When Google released Glass in the UK in 2015, it pulled the model just seven months later due to backlash over the price (£1,125) and privacy. Over a decade on, Meta is using the 28-year-old member of the Kardashian clan to make their iteration cool – she films her day through her eyes, translates fan mail with the in-built language tool and waves at her elderly pool man (interesting choice) while taking us along for the ride. “They got Marie Antoinette for less,” one commenter remarked of the unignorable excess. But for good or for bad, we can’t look away.

“They want her because of her enormous reach,” says author of Fashion and Celebrity Culture, Pamela Church-Gibson, of the rationale behind Meta’s collaboration with Jenner. “If you look at the top 10 Instagram pages, she’s right there just behind Messi, Renaldo and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson… If you choose this glamorous female celebrity with that kind of Jessica Rabbit body, all of these different [consumers] are therefore brought to the table for you.” Notably, when Jenner declared she was “sooo over” the social app Snapchat in 2018, the stock price tumbled by $1.3bn (£1bn).

“This is one of the first big enterprises that Kylie has connected herself to in years,” notes MJ Corey, psychotherapist and author of Dekonstructing the Kardashians, who adds that smart glasses are “one of these silly appendages that technocrats have tried to push on us for a while but didn’t know how” – until now. “I feel like I’ve been like the canary in the coal mine saying that when the tech billionaires figure out how to ‘Kardashify’ themselves, they’re going to have an easier time selling and normalising their tools,” she says. “Everyone hated Kim Kardashian for taking selfies, and now they’re the defining feature of Instagram. Kylie is doing that with these Meta glasses.”

Next Jenner-ation: the internet star in her self-styled Meta glasses (Instagram / Meta)

If Corey has been banging her drum on the creep of the Kardashians into tech for a while, ethicists have been pounding theirs about smart specs for even longer. A decade ago, Norwegian University of Science and Technology professor Bjørn Hofmann co-wrote a paper exposing the ethical issues smart glasses create: privacy and surveillance, safety while operating machinery, human dependence on tech for decision making, accountability in the event of a negative outcome, or changes in social interactions as we become more wary of one another due to covert filming, to name a few. Many of these have already begun to materialise, with numerous reports of women being filmed by men who try to hit on them on the street without their consent.

“This does something to the way we communicate, the way we socialise, but also to what kind of information people or companies have about us and how we become products ourselves,” Hofmann says. “There’s been a rather thoughtless implementation of this technology; we should have learned more about this. So, I’m afraid the same lack of reflection exists where, in the future to come, we’ll see similar reactions to what we’ve now had with social media,” he adds of the recent under-16s ban.

I feel like I’ve been like the canary in the coal mine saying that when the tech billionaires figure out how to ‘Kardashify’ themselves, they’re going to have an easier time selling and normalising their tools

MJ Corey, author of ‘Dekonstructing the Kardashians’

“In my profession, being frustrated is part of the task,” Hofmann admits. “The best we can do as researchers is to provide knowledge because it puts a stronger responsibility on those decision makers. But the challenge here is, who are the decision makers with regard to smart glasses? There is always a mutual influence between policy and tech, and of course, money is power. Technology is quick, ethics is quite slow and regulation is even slower,” he adds.

UK law allows the filming of other people in public spaces without their consent – and uploading that footage online is also legal. That being said, smart glasses have already been used illegally. At the start of this year, one man pleaded guilty to voyeurism after he’d recorded sex with a woman without her explicit consent. He was spared jail and fined £800 and ordered to pay a £320 surcharge.

Professor of Digital Marketing and Media, Philipp Rauschnabel, who also contributed to a paper on the risks and consequences of smart glasses almost 10 years ago, says the thing that’s shocked him the most about smart glasses is that Meta were the ones who made them mainstream: “Meta’s spending is often framed as a ‘metaverse’ bet, but reports suggested that a large share of Reality Labs’ budget was actually going into augmented-reality hardware – including smart glasses and future AR glasses – rather than only into virtual worlds such as Horizon,” he says. “But everyone focused on that. The next step is what’s called Project Orion, where you’ll be able to place realistic-looking 3D content in the physical world.”

Rauschnabel, who’s a self-declared Metaverse enthusiast, adds: “You can’t over-regulate it. That wouldn’t be good for innovation. It’s more important to educate people how to use it. It’s also, I think, OK to accept a certain level of risk. I mean, every new technology has tonnes of advantages and some disadvantages; it’s just the negative aspects are more tangible than the positive ones,” he claims.

Even if the use of smart glasses isn’t criminal, it could certainly be cataclysmic from a social perspective. “My concern is that it’s going to create an incredibly paranoid and performative society,” says Corey. “I think with the constant sense of surveillance…There’s an argument where it could be a really primitive predator and prey dynamic and that creates such a low-trust society.”

“People who don’t want to be made into content are going to be hypervigilant – and they’d be valid,” she continues. “But that can weaken the psyche, wear down a person and be the conditions that lead to psychosis to those who’re predisposed to it – and plenty of people actually are. It’s really going to erode our wellbeing, disconnecting from our authentic selves and leaning into what will play best on camera.”

Corey posits that the way the Kardashians have used media technologies to scale their billionaire status parallels the history of media itself. “Smart glasses are the natural next step,” she says, noting the first person content is symptomatic of our ever-evolving desire to be closer to our stars: cinema to TV screens to tabloids to reality TV to social media to smart glasses.

“We’ve complained that the Kardashians are everywhere; that’s because they’ve maximised every [media] form that’s available to us as it’s accelerated,” she observes. “If the Kardashians are the original influencers, what have they influenced? People will focus on the aesthetics, but I’m interested in the way that they’ve influenced our eventual acceptance of this technology.

“They sold us the idea that the use of these tools can mean participation in a new kind of economy that can lead to wealth and success – to the American dream,” Corey concludes. “Kylie is now attached to the next big iteration in the new media. These glasses are an incredibly life-changing step that we’re never going to be able to come back from.”

7 Everyday habits that can quietly damage even the happiest relationships

Every relationship faces disagreements and problems, but often they are formed by small everyday habits rather than large dramatic arguments. Most of these habits start innocently and can pass unnoticed for many months or even years. However, in the end, they affect trust, emotional connection, and communication. Partnership experts usually pay a lot of attention to healthy relationships and suggest that it takes good habits to create them. Stefon Diggs, still seeking new NFL home, insists no team has a better No 2 receiver ‘than me’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Stefon Diggs is still looking for his next NFL team after one season with the New England Patriots, which ended in a Super Bowl LX defeat.

With NFL training camps across the country set to kick off at the end of the month, Diggs, who will be entering his 12th season, made quite the statement during a recent YouTube video on his channel.

Diggs stated that he is the best No. 2 receiver in the league, and he explained why.

“Everybody got a 1,,” he said. “Opportunities aside, people might say there’s seven real 1s. In my opinion, I can compete with anybody, but take those as your 1s. You can’t name a No. 2 better than me. There’s not a No. 2 on a team. Let’s presumably give people the credit and just say, ‘OK, you want to take the No. 1 spot away.’ Name your No. 2 receiver right now. Tell me how much he makes. My last question is: Is he better than me?”

Diggs put up 1,013 yards in his 11th season, his first and only with the Patriots, on 85 receptions (102 targets) with four touchdowns from breakout star quarterback Drake Maye . It marked Diggs’ seventh 1,000-yard season in the NFL, which have come in seven of the last eight seasons.

The 32-year-old did note being a No. 2 option, which means he could be willing to take a pay cut to join a squad that he could help get back to the playoffs and, as ever player hopes, the Super Bowl. But no team has pulled the trigger just yet.

Could Diggs’ off-the-field issues be a factor? He faced some serious allegations in December after being charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault in a dispute with his private chef.

However, Diggs was found not guilty by a jury, with the NFL closing its review on the matter, stating there was insufficient evidence to warrant a suspension for violating its personal conduct policy. Diggs’ attorney said that “professional athletes have a target on their back” following the non-guilty verdict.

“We have taken these allegations seriously from Day One and that’s exactly why we were eager for the facts to come to light through the legal process,” Mitch Schuster of Meister, Seelig & Schuster, the firm that represented Diggs, said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital in May.

The Patriots released Diggs in March, but he has been staying in shape and looking for the next opportunity since the league cleared him last month.

Four Americans were reportedly caught in a fiery multi-vehicle crash in Mexico that left at least 10 people dead and about 10 others injured.

The massive pileup happened Sunday after a tractor-trailer crashed into multiple vehicles on a highway in the western state of Jalisco, according to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Nayarit.

While the agency reported 10 deaths, Mexico’s Army, Air Force and National Guard said nine people were killed.

Jalisco Civil Protection told Reuters that four Americans suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

Typhoon Bavi weakens but still brings strong winds and rain to China

BEIJING — BEIJING (AP) — Typhoon Bavi weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday, hours after making landfall in eastern China ‘s Zhejiang province, but was still bringing days of strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the country.

The storm’s intensity continued to weaken as it moved northwestward across eastern China into the province of Anhui on Sunday afternoon, according to China’s national weather center.

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to impact many eastern and northeastern Chinese cities on Sunday and Monday, the National Meteorological Center said, adding that heavy to torrential rain was recorded Sunday afternoon in provinces, including Anhui.

In Zhejiang province, more than 2.2 million people were evacuated due to Bavi, according to state media. The city of Shanghai, in Zhejiang, evacuated over 290,000 people from at-risk areas, while Fujian province evacuated more than 180,000 people.

In the coastal city of Yueqing, also in Zhejiang province, more than 1,300 trees were toppled, including at least 700 uprooted, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport were expected to cancel around 653 inbound and outbound flights due to Bavi, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Bavi passed north of Taiwan on Saturday but did not make a direct landfall. Taiwan’s fire department said at least 134 people across the island were injured, some sustaining injuries while riding motorcycles or bicycles in strong winds or due to slippery road surfaces.

Terminally ill man marries longtime love in hospital as final wish comes true

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A terminally ill man who chose to provide for his kids over spending money on a wedding has finally tied the knot with his fiancé – 20 years after he first proposed to her.

Dean Pennell, 63, met his partner Kay Beaman, 62, through their children 24 years ago in Basildon, Essex.

The couple held off on wedding plans in order to provide for their 10 children.

But after being told he had just weeks to live, Pennell — who has terminal cancer — finally married Beaman on June 18 at Colchester Hospital in Essex, England, news agency SWNS reported.

The new wife said, “I am absolutely elated. We have waited a long time, and it’s so special to be able to celebrate our marriage here, with our families.”

As Maine Democrats scramble to replace Platner, party director says the ‘grassroots energy … needs to find a home’

As Maine Democrats scramble to replace Platner, party director says the ‘grassroots energy … needs to find a home’

As the Maine Democratic Party scrambles to recover from the collapsed Senate campaign of Graham Platner, at the state party headquarters the phone hasn’t stopped ringing for 31-year-old Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson and her small team — along with a growing army of unpaid volunteers.

They‘re facing uncharted political waters since Platner withdrew from the election last week in the race against Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins while continuing to deny an allegation of sexual assault that derailed his candidacy.

The party is now building a candidate selection process from scratch in a race that could decide which party controls the Senate.

Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner speaks to voters at a town hall at the Elks Lodge 188, June 7, 2026, in Portland, Maine.

Laura Brett/Getty Images

2 weeks to choose a new candidate…

“As everyone now knows in the country, we owe the Secretary of State at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 27th, a name,” Murphy-Anderson told ABC News’ Jay O’Brien on Saturday. She added later, “We’ve got two weeks … so our goal going into this was to make this as fair and transparent and inclusive a process as possible.”

Democrats plan a 601-person party convention to be held on July 25, just two days before the deadline. Those delegates will include 101 members from the state party’s central committee and 500 delegates from all of Maine’s 16 counties. Voters will also have a say, Murphy-Anderson told O’Brien, including meetings within their local parties beforehand.

“That’s the biggest problem facing you guys, isn’t it? Making sure that voters who voted in that primary overwhelmingly for Graham Platner feel represented?” O’Brien asked.

Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson said the party’s goal for its candidate selection process is “to make this as fair and transparent and inclusive a process as possible.”

ABC News

“I think we face a lot of challenges, right? And that is definitely one of them,” Murphy-Anderson said, adding later, “The grassroots energy that we had up until this moment needs to find a home.”

O’Brien pressed Murphy Anderson: “Are you worried that it might not?”

“No, I’m not. And if you are here on the ground in Maine, I am confident that you will come away with that same conclusion,” Murphy-Anderson responded.

Platner, an oyster farmer and Marine combat veteran, built up an insurgent, progressive campaign and guided it through other scandals and controversies, including reports he sent sexually explicit messages to multiple women shortly after he was married in 2023, as well as questions about a tattoo on his chest resembling a Nazi symbol.

Platner said he got the tattoo while he was drunk on leave with other Marines in 2007; he later covered it up, claiming he hadn’t known its significance.

Progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., largely stuck by him until less than a week ago when an ex-girlfriend accused Platner of sexual assault, an allegation he denies. A chorus of Democrats — including Sanders — then called on him to step aside.

Platner initially dragged his feet, and even when he announced he would suspend his bid, claimed, “I learned about this [allegation] through press inquiries, with no time to truly respond, no time for investigations, before a corporate media system and the political establishment got to act as judge, jury, and executioner.”

But in a defiant video last week, Murphy-Anderson blamed Platner and his campaign for essentially holding the process of picking a replacement hostage.

Platner’s campaign confirmed it had reached out to the party, but denied trying to influence the selection process, saying the campaign was trying to understand how Platner would be replaced on the ballot.

“What gave you that impression that they were trying to dictate terms here?” O’Brien asked Murphy-Anderson.

She declined to share specifics of the demands she said Platner’s team made, but said they had made “direct calls to my phone,” later saying they “called with very specific things that they were asking for.”

“This campaign that had been centered on not putting their thumb on the scale, was now trying to do the same thing, and his supporters deserved better, our supporters deserved better, and Mainers deserve better,” Murphy-Anderson told O’Brien.

When he ultimately ended his campaign, Platner blamed “large forces” working against him after Senate leadership threatened to pull campaign funding.

“We believe that for the movement to continue, it can’t be me” on the ballot, he said in an 11-minute video posted on social media late Wednesday, but added, “Those in power who have the ability to do so are using these allegations as an excuse to take away all of the things that we need to run a campaign.”

Murphy-Anderson pushed back sharply on that insinuation.

“This is not an institution. You’re here in our office. There’s no cigar smoke to be seen, right? It is a bunch of young people,” she told O’Brien.

“But he did kind of create that impression,” O’Brien pressed.

“I don’t know what his end goal was, and I’m not concerned with that,” Murphy-Anderson responded.

Maine Democratic Senate hopeful Dr. Nirav Shah speaks to a town hall meeting in Freeport, Maine, on July 11, 2026.

ABC News

…and 2 weeks for them to make their case to take on Collins

While only a few days old, the race to replace Platner is already in full swing. At least seven hopefuls so far, including statewide leaders and former candidates for other races, are pitching themselves as the best bet to unseat Collins, Maine’s longtime Republican senator. She is the only Republican defending a Senate seat this year in a state Trump lost in 2024.

The list of candidates includes former State Senate President and logger Troy Jackson, who’s trying to pick up Platner’s working class mantle; as well as Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Maine Beer Company founder Dan Kleban and the state’s former CDC director Dr. Nirav Shah.

At the first stop on Shah’s new town hall tour launched in the wake of Platner’s withdrawal, Shah told O’Brien he was not worried Platner’s scandals have made it harder to defeat Collins, and that he doesn’t think he’s lost valuable time as a candidate despite launching his bid so late.

“Our mission hasn’t changed. The person who’s going to be at the front of that mission is changing, but the desire, the enthusiasm, the zeal among Democrats to defeat Susan Collins has not changed at all,” Shah said.

Collins, who has won five Senate races in Maine, says the change in her opponent doesn’t impact her approach.

“I never take any race for granted,” she told ABC affiliate WMTW on Saturday.

Graham Platner supporter Sandra Smith Congdon said she thinks most of those who backed Platner will come out to support the new candidate, but it won’t be easy.

ABC News

Former Platner supporters look at the road ahead

But Democrats face the additional challenge of uniting behind a new candidate, as some former Platner supporters say they’re grieving the withdrawal of their preferred candidate and hoping their second choice doesn’t hurt Democrats’ chances in November.

Mark Read, a Democrat who supported Platner, told O’Brien, “I think most of us were attracted to the politics that he spoke to.”

Another Platner supporter, Sandra Smith Congdon, told O’Brien she thinks most of those who backed Platner will come out to support the new candidate in the end, although it won’t be easy.

“I think people will take some time, but I think ultimately they will. I think that they need to get behind whoever the nominee is and support that person to beat Susan Collins, because ultimately that’s what matters,” she said.

Free NHS meningitis jab available for some teenagers – what you need to know

Free NHS meningitis jab available for some teenagers – what you need to know

The MenB vaccine was added to the UK NHS childhood immunisation programme for babies born on or after 1 July 2015. All babies are now offered it.

But it means teenagers and young adults over the age of 11 have not received this jab.

Young babies are vaccinated because they are more likely to get invasive infections more often than other age groups, and their bodies are less likely to be able to fight them off.

However, research suggests the MenB vaccine doesn’t necessarily prevent transmission of the infection from person to person, doesn’t target all the different B bacteria strains and doesn’t provide long-term protection.

UK vaccine experts have therefore concluded that it isn’t cost effective to offer the MenB vaccine to all adolescents.

But they do want everyone who is eligible to come forward and get the vaccine because it can prevent serious illness.

Around 10,000 people in the Kent region will have already received jabs, as part of the response to the March outbreak.

Pokémon Go at 10 and the millions still trying to catch ’em all

Pokémon Go at 10 and the millions still trying to catch ’em all

Over the years, the game has sometimes been a victim of its own hype and global appeal.

Police and safety groups once warned players not to become so engrossed in catching the next Psyduck that they got lost or put themselves in danger.

The game’s immense popularity sometimes also meant “servers buckled under the strain”, said Reynolds, meaning connectivity problems were “rife for some time”.

And while the pandemic was seen as a boon for many in the video game industry, Steranka says the initial strict lockdowns “impacted Pokémon Go probably more than any other game out there”.

The game later bounced back as restrictions eased and people once again looked for reasons to get outside.

Then in 2025, some fans questioned how the game’s future might change when Scopely – which is itself owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, bought developer Niantic for $3.5bn (then £2.7bn).

“My hope is that we prove to players over time that this is definitively a good thing for the game and the community,” Steranka says.

Looking ahead, Steranka says the focus for the game remains on community, memories and creating experiences families can share.

“No matter where I was and what phase of my life, Pokémon Go has been there for me,” he says.

“It meets people where they are, at whatever phase of life they’re in.”
