Most families wait to talk about senior care until an emergency hits, but experts say having those discussions early can lead to better outcomes and less conflict.

Tatyana Zlotsky, CEO of A Place for Mom in New York City, said 77% of the families she works with tell her they wish they’d acted sooner.

Planning before a crisis gives families more time to compare care options, understand costs and honor an older adult’s wishes instead of making rushed decisions, the expert advised.

“If you think about this being an extremely stressful, financially burdensome decision already, doing it under the duress of a medical emergency makes it 10 times worse,” she told Fox News Digital. “And yet most families are still not taking action.”

Family caregivers lose an average of $21,000 per year as they cut back on work to care for aging relatives, she noted.

Families generally tend to procrastinate because they suffer from caregiver burnout, according to Zlotsky, who specializes in providing support services and digital tools for finding local senior housing options.

“They’re already dealing with so much, it’s nearly impossible for them to predict the situation sooner,” she added.

“Doing it under the duress of a medical emergency makes it 10 times worse.”

“It’s a reconfiguration of a parent-child relationship … the parent wants to maintain their independence … the child becomes the one providing the care,” Zlotsky went on. “And so the senior resists this at all costs … and the adult child is not sure how to have the conversation.”

The discussion shouldn’t wait until a fall, hospitalization or other medical emergency, according to the expert.

Warning signs to watch for

Zlotsky emphasized that cognitive decline often begins with subtle changes in executive functioning — not always dramatic memory loss. Adult children should pay attention to these signs during routine visits, as they may signal that it’s time to talk about future care plans.

These may include, but are not limited to, any of the following, according to the expert.

  • Spoiled or expired food accumulating in the refrigerator
  • Bills or paperwork piling up that were once handled routinely
  • Frequently misplaced keys, phones or other everyday items
  • Difficulty recalling recent conversations or events
  • Changes in the ability to complete familiar multi-step tasks, such as making coffee

“Maybe Mom has made the same pot of coffee for the last 20 years,” Zlotsky said as an example. “Now all of a sudden she doesn’t drink coffee anymore … the truth might be that it takes five steps to fill the coffee maker … and her executive functioning skills are failing her.”

She encourages family members to look for those signs earlier, and to seek guidance from a professional.

“You can’t be required as a caregiver to diagnose Mom or Dad,” she said. “You really have to be able to get consultation.”

When having the conversation, Zlotsky emphasized the importance of listening to the older adult’s preferences.

There are few emails that make your stomach drop faster than one about “new privacy settings.” That usually means a company has moved another data switch, renamed a control or tucked a new choice inside an account menu you rarely visit. Google is now rolling out one of those changes for Search services. The setting is called Search Services History. It controls whether Google saves your activity from Search services when you are signed into your Google Account.

That may sound routine at first. Most of us already know Google can save search history. However, this update goes beyond the old idea of typed searches in a box. Google says Search Services History can include images you upload, files you ask about, voice searches, Search Live recordings, Translate speaking practice audio and other interactions with Search services.

The part that should make you pause is the Save Media setting. When it is turned on, Google can save media from your Search services interactions. That saved media may be used to improve Google’s AI models and technologies. In other words, the random photo you searched with Google Lens or the voice recording you used in a Search feature may help improve Google’s AI.

What Google’s Search Services History can save

Google says Search Services History may include your searches, results you view, AI Mode responses, voice search recordings, Search Live transcripts, Google Lens images, uploaded files and some information tied to your activity.

Maybe you used Google Lens to identify a plant. Perhaps you uploaded an image to search for a product. You might have used Translate to practice before a trip. Or maybe you asked a question by voice because your hands were full. All of that can feel harmless in the moment. Still, the bigger issue is where that data can go after it is saved.

Google says saved media may help you revisit past visual searches or continue a Search Live conversation. That can be useful. However, Google also says saved media may help develop and improve AI models and technologies. That is the trade-off. You may get more personalized features. Google may get more personal inputs from the tools you already use.

Why this Google AI setting deserves your attention

This is the kind of privacy change that can slide right past you. The language sounds helpful. The setting lives inside account controls. The rollout happens gradually, so you may not see it right away. That is exactly why you should check.

Google says the new settings are based on your prior choices for Web & App Activity and Search Personalization. If those were on, the new Search Services History setting may also be on. If your prior settings were off, the new one should be off too. That sounds fair enough, but it still puts the work on you.

Also, turning off Save Media does not automatically wipe everything that was already saved. Google says previously saved media may continue to be used to improve its technologies unless you delete it from your account. If saved media has already been selected to train AI models, Google says it is no longer connected to your account and may be kept for up to four years.

That is the part I would not ignore. Once your media moves into that AI-training pipeline, deleting the original activity may not pull it back.

How to opt out of Google’s Search AI data training setting

You can check this from a phone or computer, but I recommend using a computer if you can. The account settings are easier to read.

  • Open a browser and go to myactivity.google.com.
  • Make sure you are signed into the account you use for Search, Gmail, YouTube or Android. If you have more than one Google Account, repeat these steps for each one.
  • Look for the Search Services History section. If you do not see it yet, Google says the new settings are still rolling out. In that case, your Search history may still be controlled by Web & App Activity.
  • If Search Services History is turned on, you should see a Save Media subsetting.
  • Uncheck the box next to Save Media if you do not want Google saving media from your Search services interactions.
  • If you want to go further, turn Search Services History off. Google says you can choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
  • To remove older items, go back to Search Services History and select View and delete saved history. Review what appears there, then delete activity you do not want saved.
  • If Search Services History has not reached your account yet, go to My Activity and review Web & App Activity. That may still control some Search services history until the rollout reaches you.
  • Google also has a Personalized Recommendations setting for Search services. This can affect how Search services personalize results, feeds and AI responses based on your activity. You can review it in your Google Account under Data & privacy, then Personalization settings.

 

What happens after you turn Save Media off

Turning off Save Media stops Google from saving media from future Search services interactions as part of Search Services History. However, it does not shut down every kind of Search history. Text-based activity, transcripts and some AI responses may still be saved if Search Services History remains on.

Also, Google says media from your future interactions can still be used to respond to you and help keep services safe. The key difference is that future media should not be used to train Google’s generative AI models unless you provide feedback. That is a meaningful distinction, but it isn’t the same as using Google with no data collection at all.

You should also know that Save Media does not control everything across Google. It does not cover separate activity settings for Gemini Apps, YouTube, NotebookLM or Google Voice. Those services have their own controls.

 

Kurt’s key takeaways

Google’s new Search Services History setting is worth checking now, especially if you use Lens, voice search, Translate or AI Mode. The Save Media box is the one I would look for first. If you do not want your images, files, audio or video saved for future AI improvement, turn it off. Then go one step further and review old activity. Turning off a setting usually protects future data, but past items may still sit in your account unless you delete them. Finally, repeat the process for every Google Account you use. Many of us have a personal account, a work account or an old account still signed in somewhere.

“The boat had hardly left the island, we were all screaming for help…”: How a dream holiday near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc ended in tragedy

What was meant to be a memorable island vacation turned into a nightmare for Indian travellers abroad. A tragedy hit on July 11 when a tourist speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members capsized shortly after departing from May Rut Island, a small tropical island off Vietnam’s famous Phu Quoc Island. As per local authorities, the accident claimed the lives of at least 15 Indian nationals while 21 people were rescued. In a recent update, Vietnamese authorities have launched an investigation to find what might have happened. Victims hailed from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and KeralaOn Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam released the names of the 15 Indian nationals who lost their lives near Phu Quoc Island. All the victims were from South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.Among the survivors was a tourist from Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur. Talking to PTI, he described the accident. “The incident happened around 1:30 pm local time. The boat had gone barely 300 to 400 metres when it tipped over. We were taking pictures and it happened before we could react,” he recalled“We were all screaming for help,” he said. He said there was some wind but “that is expected on an island”. He further stated that the boat capsized within moments, leaving tourists struggling. The Vietnamese Embassy took to X and wrote, “It is with profound grief that we share the list of 15 Indian nationals who have lost their lives in the tragic boat accident near Phu Quoc Island today. The list has been received from the Vietnamese authorities. Our prayers are with the families of the deceased. The Embassy and Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City remain available for any assistance”.Phu Quoc, a paradise that draws thousands of Indian travellersThe accident occurred near Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island. It is one of the most visited beaches in Asia located in the Gulf of Thailand. The island is noted for its white-sand beaches, emerald waters, coral reefs and island-hopping tours.

The island has gained popularity among Indian travellers in recent years. Visitors often combine Phu Quoc’s beaches with boat trips to smaller surrounding islands such as Hon Thom and May Rut, among others. Here they can enjoy snorkelling, swimming and photography.Rescue efforts and investigationAs per local reports and videos doing rounds on social media, nearby boats rushed to help rescue passengers despite difficult sea conditions. Search-and-rescue teams also responded quickly.Many survivors were pulled safely from the sea even before rescue teams arrived by the boats nearby. Officials later confirmed that all bodies had been recovered, while the injured were taken to hospitals in time for medical aid. Sadly, this is not the first accident to shock Vietnam.Around a year ago, in July 2025, the sightseeing vessel Wonder Sea capsized during a sudden thunderstorm in the famous Ha Long Bay. As per reports, 39 tourists were killed in the accident. In 2018, a tourist boat capsized near Thailand’s Phuket Island during a storm, killing dozens of visitors.As investigations continue, authorities hope to find out the exact cause of the speedboat overturn so that such incidents could be avoided in the future.

Conor McGregor reacts to disastrous UFC return: ‘My head gasket is gone’

All of the hype and pageantry of an impending Conor McGregor return to the UFC Octagon on Saturday night blew up in smoke within seconds.

McGregor stepped into the cage against Max Holloway at UFC 329. He came across the mat with a flying left roundhouse kick and landed awkwardly on his right knee. He tried another kick and slipped to the ground. He tried to power through it but nearly two minutes into the fight, he grabbed at his right leg again and referee Mike Beltran called the fight.

“My head gasket is gone,” he wrote on social media. “Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere.

“I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”

UFC president Dana White said there were no signs of a pre-existing injury going into the weigh-ins on Friday.

“Five years off in this sport is rough,” White said. “We’re assuming a blown ACL. That’s what I assumed when I saw it, and that’s what the doctors think, too.”

Holloway said he kept telling Beltran to stop the fight because McGregor was injured but the Irishman kept saying, “Fight!”

“During the fight, you could see his demeanor change,” Holloway said. “When I saw him hurt, I said, ‘Call this, he’s hurt.’ I just hope for a speedy recovery.”

Wimbledon 2026 results: Tokito Oda beats Alfie Hewett in men’s wheelchair singles final

Japan’s Tokito Oda beat Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett to claim his third Wimbledon men’s wheelchair singles title.

Oda, the number one seed and defending champion, dominated Sunday’s final on Court One to win 6-1 6-1.

It is a sixth successive Grand Slam singles title won by 20-year-old Oda, who is unbeaten at the four majors since his loss to Hewett in the 2025 Australian Open final.

Hewett won a seventh men’s wheelchair doubles title at Wimbledon alongside fellow Briton Gordon Reid on Saturday but, for the second year in succession, he was beaten by Oda in the singles final at SW19.

Hewett struggled on serve for long spells, serving three double faults in his opening service game, six in the first set and 10 in all during the match.

Speaking on court after his loss, the 28-year-old – who won the singles crown in 2024 – said: “Right now, I’m extremely disappointed.

“I was on a high yesterday, it was an incredible match with Gordon and this match won’t overshadow that performance.

“It’s not the performance I wanted today, I don’t think Tokito read the script. Congratulations to him and his team, that’s three Grand Slams now [in 2026] so I know what his goal will be going into the US Open. Hopefully someone can stop him.

“He’s a incredible player and demonstrated that again today, so massive congratulations.”

Badly burned British couple rescued from ravine during Spain wildfires

A sustained heatwave with temperatures of around 40C (104F) has caused wildfires across Southern Europe this summer, particularly in France, Portugal and Spain.

On Friday, Los Gallardos mayor Francisco Miguel Reyes told Spanish radio station Cadena SER said “it feels like a bomb has fallen” on the area.

“This is the first time we’ve faced a fire as devastating as this.”

Hundreds of firefighters, military and law enforcement personnel, and 30 aircraft, continued responding to the blaze.

Forensic scientists in Madrid are using samples from the bodies of the victims and DNA samples from the families of those reported missing to try to identify the dead.

The identification process has been slowed because collecting DNA samples from relatives has proved difficult, with family members traveling from other countries.

With at least 12 people dead, this is already among the deadliest wildfires in Spanish history.

In 1984, 20 people died in a fire on the Canary Island of La Gomera, while in 1979, 21 people, including nine children, died in a forest fire near Lloret de Mar in north-eastern Spain.

Wildfires have also plagued France over the summer months.

On Monday over 10,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the foothills of the French Pyrenees.

French authorities said on Saturday 32 people had been arrested on suspicion of starting the fires.

Climate change is driving up temperatures around the world, and Europe is the fastest warming continent, heating up twice as fast as the global average, according to the Copernicus climate service.

This is causing increased summer heatwaves, greater pressure on Europe’s water supply, and more intense wildfires.

Qatar’s former ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has died at age 74, state news agency says

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who as ruler of Qatar transformed the tiny Persian Gulf nation into a global player in diplomacy, media and investment, and then shattered tradition by voluntarily turning over power to his son, has died, state media reported. He was 74.

The state-run Qatar News Agency reported his death. It offered no cause.

Sheikh Hamad, who stepped down in June 2013 after 18 years as emir, was the architect of energy-rich Qatar’s stunning ambitions that turned it from a backwater into an international crossroads in less than a generation. Qatar owns the Harrod’s department store in London and founded the powerful Al Jazeera satellite news network.

Qatar’s political reach today stretches from North Africa to Afghanistan and it hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the world’s most-watched soccer event. Sheikh Hamad, though long out of power, received thunderous applause from Qataris attending its opening match.

But Qatar’s rise under Sheikh Hamad also rankled regional and Western allies with its independent-minded policymaking, including its close ties to Shiite powerhouse Iran, the Palestinian militant Hamas group and Egypt’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Al Jazeera’s blunt reporting, though a much-praised departure from the traditionally deferential habits of Arab media, also was criticized and accused of slanting coverage to suit the views of Qatar’s rulers.

“The future lies ahead of you, the children of this homeland, as you usher into a new era where young leadership hoists the banner,” Sheikh Hamad said as he announced his abdication and the carefully crafted transition to his son, the British-educated crown prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was then 33.

The peaceful, voluntary transfer of power was rare in a region where such change usually results from death or overthrow. Sheikh Hamad himself seized control after deposing his father, Sheikh Khalifa, in a bloodless palace coup in 1995.

His abdication was seen as Qatar’s attempt to stay ahead of Arab Spring-inspired calls for reforms and leadership more attuned to the region’s large and powerful young population. Qatar, a peninsula half the size of New Jersey, is believed to have around 300,000 citizens.

At the time, Sheikh Hamad also was thought to have been in poor health for years. In December 2015, Qatari officials said he was flown to Switzerland for surgery after breaking a leg while on holiday.

Sheikh Hamad attended Britain’s military academy, Sandhurst, and became commander of Qatar’s armed forces and defense minister. He was named crown prince in the late 1970s and gradually broadened his duties to include planning for Qatar’s vast oil and gas reserves.

After seizing power from his father, who then lived in exile for nearly a decade, Sheikh Hamad quickly moved to open an inward-looking nation to outside influences, epitomized by Al Jazeera, which became a major force in global media.

Its reporting not only angered other Arab leaders, sometimes to the point of diplomatic rupture, it also riled Washington. Al Jazeera aired statements from the terror network al-Qaida, even as Qatar hosted one of the key Pentagon logistical hubs following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the U.S.-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Sheikh Hamad, meanwhile, aggressively sought international prestige through sports, an effort crowned by Qatar’s successful bid to host the World Cup, though marred by accusations that it used its huge wealth to woo poor countries’ support.

Qatar’s brand is also prominent across the sporting world from sponsorship deals with the Spanish football giant Barcelona to a majority stake in the football club Paris Saint-Germain.

Sheikh Hamad also pushed Qatar Airways to expand into a major international carrier, trying to rival neighboring carrier Emirates. The country’s international airport in Doha, Qatar’s capital, which cost at least $15 billion to construct, also bears his name.

Sheikh Hamad had wide-ranging visions for Qatar’s role as a diplomatic broker. Over the years, its mediation was brought to bear on the conflict in Sudan’s western Darfur region, Lebanese factional feuding and the rift between the Palestinians’ Hamas and Fatah factions.

In October 2012, Sheikh Hamad became the first head of state to visit the Gaza Strip since Hamas seized control five years previously, promising a total of $400 million in projects and investments. During the visit, Gaza radio stations played a song entitled “Thank you, Qatar.”

Qatar also reached out to Hamas’ main foe, Israel. Sheikh Hamad met in 2007 with Israel’s then-foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, at the United Nations General Assembly. Qatar allowed an Israeli trade office to operate in Doha until it was ordered closed in response to Israel’s attacks on Gaza in late 2008.

While neighboring Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates diplomatically recognized Israel in 2020, Qatar maintained its distance. Israelis at the World Cup also faced a multitude of Palestinian flags and anger over its occupation of lands Palestinians claim for their future state.

During the Arab Spring, Qatar sent warplanes to the NATO-led missions in Libya against Moammar Gadhafi’s forces and provided key military and financial aid to the successful Libyan rebels. In Syria, Qatar was a main political sponsor of the opposition to then-President Bashar Assad and led calls to increase the flow of weapons to the Syrian rebels.

However, its backing of Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood has caused rifts with other nations in the region. Those tensions culminated under Sheikh Tamim, when Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE launched a yearslong boycott of Qatar, in part over the policies of his father that continued during his rule.

In one of the last initiatives before Sheikh Hamad’s abdication, Qatar formally opened an office for Afghanistan’s Taliban, which set the stage for talks between the United States and the Taliban that ultimately led to NATO and America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
