2026 FIFA World Cup: The moments that made the World Cup
These five orchids mimic humans, babies and animals
While gardeners are accustomed to the occasional peculiar fruit or flower, some botanical discoveries defy expectation, revealing forms that are surprisingly human-like. Tomatoes, for instance, are known for their mischievous shapes, sometimes resembling horned animals, Russian dolls, or even large-nosed figures, often influenced by extreme temperatures or vivid imaginations.
However, it is the orchid family that often holds the most astonishing surprises. Far from their typically elegant reputation, many species display an uncanny resemblance to various creatures, from animals and insects to distinct human figures. These remarkable orchids stand out for their striking mimicry, captivating observers with their unique and often amusing forms.
Let’s get back to that naked man orchid
The Orchis italica, known as the ‘naked man orchid,’ offers a whimsical sight. Its blooms ‘smile broadly’ while hanging, with ‘legs splayed and arms extended as if requesting a hug.’ Its ‘decision to forgo pants is obvious.’ Also called the ‘Italian orchid,’ this species hails from the sunny Mediterranean. Its Mediterranean origin may explain its apparent ‘decision to wear what resembles a hat.’ It thrives in partial shade and infertile soil, growing up to 20 inches tall before midspring flowers appear.

Other orchid varieties resemble babies, doves, bees and monkeys
Nature’s artistry often surprises, but few botanical wonders are as captivating as orchids that mimic other life forms, from swaddled infants to playful primates.
Among these extraordinary blooms is the Swaddled Baby orchid (Anguloa uniflora), a two-foot tulip orchid found exclusively in the high-humidity Andes region of South America. Its delicate pale-pink-to-white petals form a striking resemblance to a newborn lovingly wrapped in a blanket.

Equally remarkable is the Dove orchid (Peristeria elata), Panama’s national flower, known locally as flor del Espíritu Santo. Its blossoms uncannily mirror a dove’s head, beak, body, tail, and purple-speckled wings. These upright stems can reach three feet, producing up to 20 blooms from late summer through early fall, thriving in warm conditions with ample air circulation and consistently moist roots.

Perhaps the most cunning is the Bumble Bee orchid (Ophrys bombyliflora). This Mediterranean beauty employs an ingenious strategy, its scent and flower mimicking a female solitary bee. Mate-seeking male bees are tricked into landing, their hopes dashed, but not before inadvertently pollinating the flower and nearby orchids, ensuring the species’ propagation.

High in the humid Andes forests, the Monkey orchid (Dracula chimaera) thrives in cool, moist, and partially shady conditions. Growing just six to twelve inches, its two-inch-wide flowers bear an undeniable resemblance to an adorable monkey’s face.

Unlike misshapen produce, these orchids’ unique appearances are entirely nature’s design. While some may be available from specialty nurseries, cultivating them at home demands replicating their specific native climates, often requiring greenhouses or humidifiers. For many, the simpler delight lies in appreciating these botanical marvels from afar.
UK homebuyers face fresh blow over fixed mortgage rates
Homeowners face fresh uncertainty as average fixed mortgage rates have recorded their largest daily increase since spring this year, according to a leading financial information website.
Data from Moneyfactscompare.co.uk reveals the typical two-year fixed-rate residential mortgage climbed to 5.54 per cent on Tuesday morning, a 0.04 percentage point rise from 5.50 per cent on Monday.
This marks the most significant daily jump for this product since 2 April.
Similarly, the average five-year fixed residential mortgage rate saw an increase of 0.05 percentage points, reaching 5.57 per cent on Tuesday, up from 5.52 per cent the previous day. Moneyfacts noted this was its biggest daily rise since 31 March.
The sudden uptick follows a period where mortgage rates had been gradually declining in recent weeks, after an earlier surge linked to the conflict in the Middle East. However, a number of lenders have begun to push their rates upwards again in recent days.
Rachel Springall, a finance expert at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said borrowers will “be deeply disappointed to see mortgage rates on the rise again, but this just shows how sensitive our financial markets are to geopolitical tensions.
“As feared, rising swap rates (which lenders use to price mortgages) are a signal for lenders to move quickly to re-price their ranges, as fixed mortgage rates tend to follow these moves.”
She added: “Until there is more certainty in the market, mortgage rate moves are unlikely to calm in the weeks ahead, and it will be frustrating for buyers to see that the positive trajectory of rate cuts seen over recent weeks has been thrown off course.”
Adam French, head of consumer finance at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said: “At least 25 lenders have increased selected mortgage rates in the last seven days, with only a handful reducing selected products.

“The likes of HSBC, Barclays, Nationwide Building Society, Lloyds Banking Group and NatWest were among those making hikes.”
He said that higher funding costs leave lenders “with little choice but to reprice products, even if the Bank of England hasn’t yet changed the base rate”.
Mr French added: “A more volatile world is a more expensive world, and recent months and years are clear evidence that borrowers cannot simply assume mortgage rates will continue moving in one direction.
“Inflation shocks and shifts in market sentiment can alter expectations overnight.
“While competition between lenders is still strong, another bout of volatility has quickly brought the latest rate cutting cycle to a halt.
“In the meantime, it is essential prospective borrowers stay on top of their options and seek independent advice.”
What does Burnham’s VAT cut mean for your energy bills?
Andy Burnham has scrapped VAT on household electricity bills from October in his first major measure to tackle the cost of living crisis since becoming prime minister.
The government said the cut will save the typical household £45 a year from 1 October by cutting VAT on domestic electricity from 5 per cent to zero.
Unveiling the policy on his first full day in office, Mr Burnham said the tax cut would give families “breathing space” after years of pressure from rising living costs.

“Westminster has not been working for people for too long, with families struggling with the cost of living,” he said.
“That needs to change. I said I wanted to give people breathing space, and that’s what I’m announcing on my second day as prime minister. We’re taking immediate action to cut taxes on energy bills, put more money in people’s pockets and bring back hope.”
The announcement marks the first major economic intervention by the new Labour government following Mr Burnham’s arrival in Downing Street on Monday, when he pledged to tackle the cost of living crisis, bring key utilities back into public ownership and end rough sleeping.
Here’s what you need to know about Mr Burnham’s plan to cut energy bills:
What the energy bill VAT cut means for households
The measure is expected to cut £45 from Ofgem’s final energy price cap of the year, which comes into effect for October to December.
The cap is the maximum amount suppliers can charge for each unit of energy to households on a standard variable tariff. It is expressed as an annual bill for an average home.

This means that the savings passed on to households from the VAT cut to energy bills will vary. One of the key factors will be usage, with those using more energy actually set to save more on their bills due to paying proportionally more VAT.
The government has said energy suppliers will be required to pass the VAT reduction on to all domestic customers, including those on fixed-price tariffs, as happened when previous energy bill reductions were introduced.
The measure will apply across England, Scotland and Wales, while Northern Ireland, which has a separate energy market, will receive equivalent funding through the devolved administration.
How much will it cost the government?
The Treasury said the VAT cut would cost around £850m this financial year and would be funded by cancelling the government’s planned Digital ID programme, which had been expected to cost £1.8bn over the next three years.
However, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) highlighted in November that the cost of the Digital ID scheme was “unfunded”, as it was based on savings from departmental budgets not yet identified.
New chancellor John Healey said the measure would offer immediate help ahead of the winter, commenting: “For too long, too many people have struggled with the cost of living”.

“Today’s energy tax cut will give families some breathing room on bills, and provide some reassurance this winter.
“This measure is funded this year from cancelling the Digital ID programme, and it will help bring down inflation while supporting households in every postcode.”
Officials estimate removing VAT from electricity bills will shave around 0.10 percentage points off CPI inflation and around 0.14 percentage points from the Retail Prices Index.
Does the change apply to businesses?
Small businesses eligible for domestic energy VAT relief that are not VAT-registered, along with charities and residential care homes qualifying for the reduced rate, will also benefit.
Unlike targeted support schemes, removing VAT benefits all households, although larger electricity users will see the biggest cash savings because they consume more power. Ministers argued that many vulnerable households, including those relying on electricity-powered medical equipment, would also gain from the measure.
The announcement builds on last year’s Budget, when ministers removed nearly £150 of costs from household energy bills as part of efforts to curb inflation.
Kevin Mountford, co-founder of savings platform Raisin UK, said the move would be welcomed by households seeking greater financial certainty.
“Our 2026 Money Confidence Index found that over half of Britons feel stressed about their finances, while nearly half are either not confident or only slightly confident when planning their financial future,” he said.
“Greater clarity around tax, public spending and the government’s economic priorities will therefore be important. Prolonged uncertainty risks making it even harder for people to feel confident about their financial decisions.”
The VAT cut is expected to take effect in time for the next Ofgem energy price cap from October, with ministers indicating that any further cost-of-living measures will be considered in the autumn Budget alongside updated forecasts from the OBR.
Nancy Guthrie video may have been erased after FBI kept out for days, director says

EXCLUSIVE: The delay in allowing the FBI to assist in the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s suspected abduction may have cost crucial video evidence due to the elaborate process involved in recovering Nest doorbell footage from the crime scene when the victim did not have a cloud subscription and her physical camera was missing as well, according to the FBI director.
Guthrie, the mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was taken from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of Feb. 1, according to authorities.
The FBI worked with Google to recover cached video from Guthrie’s Nest camera that was not intended for long-term storage and was on the verge of deletion, Director Kash Patel told Fox News Digital.
If there was more, it was lost before the FBI became involved, and its evidentiary value remains unknown.

“We were looking for the needle of all needles in all haystacks, because since she didn’t pay for it, they didn’t record that data,” he said. “But there was a chance that it was located in their cache just before it was being deleted.”
That’s where investigators found the video and still images that Patel made public on Feb. 10, in the hope that someone would recognize the suspect and turn him in.
A short time later, FBI experts had generated a rough physical description. The masked suspect is described as between 5 feet, 9 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black Ozark Trail backpack.

A masked man appeared on Guthrie’s Nest camera at least twice — once on the day of her Feb. 1 abduction, and once about three weeks earlier, Fox News Digital has reported previously. Authorities have not publicly ruled out the potential for additional suspects in the case.
There is only a single still image publicly available from the earlier visit. Experts say it’s likely that video existed at one point.
If the FBI were involved sooner, agents may have been able to recover additional evidence, which potentially may have included a suspect vehicle, more footage of the masked intruder or even additional imagery from a prior visit to Guthrie’s home, Patel said.

“What we do know is that the longer you wait, there’s no chance of recovering the video,” said Morgan Wright, the CEO and founder of the National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases. “The earlier you get started, the better your chances. Waiting four days may have been fatal to the recovery of some video that could have been more illuminating.”

Because Google and the FBI were able to recover at least some video through this process, it’s fair to infer that earlier video would have existed as well, Wright told Fox News Digital.

“If this was recovered from a backend cache and it was almost deleted, that implies that another video was deleted because they would have been able to recover more than what they did,” he said. “Timing is always an issue.”
At this point, however, whatever may or may not have existed remains unknown and unavailable to investigators.

Patel has previously said the FBI was ready to help on day one and explained this week that he wanted to deploy scores of FBI personnel from the outset. However, local authorities didn’t request the FBI’s assistance for four days.

By the time the FBI arrived, the crime scene had already been released. People had been allowed to knock on Guthrie’s front door, where her blood was on the porch. It was secured once more, and FBI agents spent hours examining the home and the yard, collecting additional home security cameras.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has countered that an FBI task force member was present during the initial stages of the investigation — however that officer is not a federal agent.
The sheriff’s department declined to comment for this story.

Judge approves a $1.5B Anthropic settlement over pirated books used to train the Claude chatbot
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion copyright settlement in which artificial intelligence company Anthropic will pay thousands of authors about $3,000 per book after using pirated copies of their works to train its Claude chatbot.
District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín said in a Monday ruling that the class-action settlement provides “meaningful relief” to affected authors and publishers.
About 91% of the more than 482,000 books covered by the ruling have been claimed by authors or publishers who are now due payment.
Plaintiff attorney Justin Nelson said in a statement that the settlement was “the largest known copyright recovery in history. We look forward to making distributions to the Class as promptly as possible.”
U.S. District Judge William Alsup issued the preliminary approval in San Francisco federal court last September and has since retired. Alsup had dealt the case a mixed ruling last summer, finding that training AI chatbots on copyrighted books wasn’t illegal but that Anthropic wrongfully acquired millions of books through pirate websites.
Bestselling thriller novelist Andrea Bartz first brought the suit with two other authors in 2024.

VAT to be cut from electricity bills in October
Jones, who was also previously chief secretary to the Treasury, wrote on X, external that the Digital ID programme was unfunded.
While praising the VAT cut as “good”, he said “the government will have to set out how it will pay for its new policies at the budget”.
Conservative Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride also criticised the use of the Digital ID budget to fund the VAT cut.
“The cuts to the Digital ID card budget are not real because the money was never provided in the first place.
“We are only one day in and already it is smoke and mirrors on the public finances.”
Reynolds told the BBC’s Today programme a VAT cut to electricity bills would be funded through a “straightforward switch spend” redirecting money for digital ID.
He said money for digital ID “would have had to have been found” and that scrapping the scheme removed “pressure” from the budget allowing the government to “give real help to people”.
But the Office for Budget Responsibility said last November that digital ID would have to paid for out of savings from government departments and these had not yet been identified.
The spending watchdog said bringing in Digital ID had “provisionally forecast to cost £1.8bn in total over the next three years”.
Government sources have insisted that departments have been working to find savings to fund Digital ID since the OBR made its forecast in November and this money would now be reallocated to fund the VAT cut.
Household energy prices rose by 13% for millions of people in England, Scotland and Wales at the start of July, under regulator Ofgem’s price cap.
Price rises were driven by the higher cost of gas, but have a relatively limited impact owing to warm weather and lower energy use during the summer months.
However, higher energy prices caused by the US-Israeli war with Iran, which has constrained global supplies of oil and liquified natural gas, are likely to persist into the winter, according to analysts.
The VAT cut only applies to the current financial year — any decision to keep it in future years would have to be made in a Budget.
The government expects it will lower inflation by 0.1 percentage points.
In his first speech as the UK’s prime minister, Burnham vowed to provide “breathing space” for households struggling with the cost of living.
On Tuesday, he said the VAT cut would “put more money in people’s pockets”.
The VAT cut is the second intervention on energy bills by the government in six months.
Former chancellor Rachel Reeves removed one levy and shifted others onto general taxation to lower bills in April.
Speaking to the BBC, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said: “I think we’ll have a summer of these little headline grabbing small announcements.
“What we need is the big picture so people know they are getting real help with the cost of living.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the VAT cut was “something that is only allowed because of Brexit”.
But he said it would not “address the real issue of the cost of living” and of running a home, because “most houses are heated by oil or gas” and bills were being inflated by green levies.
The End Fuel Poverty Coalition welcomed the reduction, but said it “does not address the scale of what households are facing”.
Simon Francis, the group’s co-ordinator, said Burnham’s government must “go even further” with targeted support for those most in need.
He added: “This breathing space is also not a cure. The only way to bring bills down for good is to change how they are set.”

Fitness influencer Clavicular says he started taking testosterone at 14, calls natural training ‘a waste’
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Clavicular revealed on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast that he abandoned natural weightlifting as a teenager in favor of taking testosterone.
On Tuesday’s episode, the fitness and looksmaxxing personality – known for his controversial focus on “looksmaxxing” – called traditional training without performance-enhancing drugs a “complete waste of time.”
Clavicular, whose real name is Braden Eric Peters, told Hannity that his interest in fitness began in his family’s basement gym in Hoboken, New Jersey. After researching workout routines online, he decided that making progress naturally was too slow.

“I started reading different articles and forum posts about how to properly train as one would being a beginner to the gym, and that’s sort of where I came to the conclusion that there’s no reason to train naturally,” Clavicular said.
“It’s a complete waste of my time when I have this mechanism I could utilize, which was testosterone, to make the results in a much more efficient timeline. So why wouldn’t I?”

The decision led Clavicular to secretly acquire performance-enhancing drugs at a young age, he shared.
“I used to have to camp out by the mailbox and pretend to be sick from school,” he said, adding that he intercepted shipments of testosterone at age 14 to hide them from his parents.
