EU pauses methane penalties amid energy crisis, US pressure

The European Commission says waiving penalties will ensure the security of energy supply.

The European Union has recommended the suspension of penalties for oil and gas companies that breach its methane emissions standards, following pressure from the United States and other countries.

The European Commission on Monday said that EU member states should not apply penalties in 2027-2030 in order to avoid energy supply disruptions. The environmental regime was due to come into effect from the start of next year, but the energy crisis sparked by the US-Iran war has served to complicate the issue.

The commission said the suspension would give importers time to reach compliance “while ensuring security of supply in a context of global energy markets tightness caused by the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the conflict in the Middle East“.

The EU Methane Regulation would have seen companies face fines of up to 20 percent of annual turnover for failing to comply with European-equivalent emissions monitoring rules.

The US and other oil- and gas-producing states, as well as fossil fuel industry groups and some EU member states, had demanded changes to the law.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, alongside Algeria, Nigeria and Qatar, wrote to the EU in June, warning of potential disruptions to Europe’s oil and gas supply.

A group of 17 EU member states also asked for the law to be delayed.

Environmental groups have sought to hit back, urging Brussels to keep the penalties in place.

However, the suspension announced on Monday is unlikely to satisfy the critics. The commission noted that “all obligations stemming from the Regulation will continue to apply”.

In addition, the European Commission’s recommendation is not legally binding, but courts are required to take the recommendation into account.

The commission noted that although methane is the second-greatest contributor to climate change, “geopolitical developments in the Middle East are re-shaping the global energy system”.

Restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted the flow of oil and gas for months, and with the current renewed tensions between the US and Iran, fears of supply shortages remain high.

Judge temporarily halts Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger

Judge temporarily halts Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger

A U.S. district judge temporarily halted the Paramount Skydance-Warner Bros. Discovery merger on Monday, after a coalition of states sued to block the deal.

The temporary restraining order will remain in effect for 14 days, with a hearing set for Aug. 3.

The states’ lawsuit “presented compelling evidence that the combined firm resulting from the transaction will possess substantial market share in the wide-release theatrical distribution market,” California district judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín wrote in the ruling. “On this combined firm market share alone, the Court is persuaded that it can presume the proposed merger is likely to violate antitrust laws.”

“Paramount and Warner Bros. will continue to operate as separate, viable companies competing in the marketplace while they wait for the Court to adjudicate this case,” she added.

Attorneys general in 12 states, led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, sued last week, arguing that the merger would harm competition in the movie industry, result in lower pay for actors and writers and harm consumers by limiting their news and entertainment options.

A Paramount Skydance spokesperson called the states’ antitrust arguments “without merit.”

“This merger is lawful, pro-competitive, and will benefit consumers, creators, workers, and the entertainment industry,” the company said in a statement Monday. “We will continue to vigorously defend the transaction and will look forward to the hearings on the substance of the State AGs’ action.”

Warner Bros. referred CBS News to Paramount for comment.

Bonta issued a statement calling the judge’s ruling “a critical first win in our case to ensure this megamerger never sees the light of day.” He said the states are “fighting for a free and fair market and a thriving film and television industry that serves creatives and audiences alike.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who also joined the lawsuit, said, “Today’s decision is an important victory for all those who would be hurt by this merger, and I look forward to continuing to fight this case.”

The states’ lawsuit alleged that the merger would violate the Clayton Act of 1914, which prevents mergers that may undermine competition or create a monopoly.

Paramount has argued that combining with Warner Bros. will allow it to create more series and films and boost employment opportunities for industry professionals.

The $110 billion merger would unite two of the nation’s leading media companies, giving them control of nearly a third of cable programming and more than a third of blockbuster films, according to Bonta’s office.

Europe’s ‘green ideology’ climate agenda risks crushing its industry, environment minister warns

Europe’s ‘green ideology’ climate agenda risks crushing its industry, environment minister warns

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

UNITED NATIONS — Europe risks destroying its industrial base unless its leaders retreat from aggressive climate policies and respond to voters demanding economic results, Czech Environment Minister Igor Červený warned in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“If we don’t change the course, we will probably crush the industry,” Červený said during his first visit to the United Nations, where he addressed the U.N. High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Červený pointed to the pressure facing European manufacturers, particularly the automotive sector, and warned that companies were increasingly moving production abroad.

The debate comes as Europe faces mounting pressure to revive its economy while maintaining ambitious climate targets. The discussion is increasingly relevant for the United States, Europe’s largest trading partner, as Washington and Brussels navigate disagreements over energy policy, industrial competitiveness and the pace of the global transition away from fossil fuels.

“If you look at the market at this moment, mostly in European countries, there is a very bad situation,” he said. “We see many companies leave our territory and leave for China or another place in the world.”

Without those companies, he said, European governments would lose both tax revenue and jobs.

Červený argued that European governments must find a “win-win” approach that protects the environment without undermining industry and employment.

“We have to be very careful about this and be very reasonable and try to find some solution for both sides,” he said. “If you look from a higher perspective at European countries, most of them provided only the green ideology. And I think this is a bad way.”

Červený said resistance to the current approach was spreading beyond the Czech Republic, citing Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany and some Scandinavian countries.

The Czech Republic has been among several European governments pressing Brussels to ease parts of the Green Deal, including by delaying the bloc’s new carbon market for buildings and road transport and seeking changes to emissions-trading rules that Prague argues are raising energy costs and weakening industrial competitiveness.

Červený’s warning stood in contrast to the position presented by European Commissioner for Environment Jessika Roswall during the ministerial segment of the U.N. High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York on July 13. The annual forum, convened under the U.N. Economic and Social Council, brings governments together to review progress toward the organization’s global development goals.

Roswall, speaking on behalf of the European Union and its member states, said the bloc remained committed to the 2030 Agenda, a U.N. framework adopted in 2015 that sets 17 goals covering issues including poverty, health, clean energy, infrastructure and environmental protection to be pursued by 2030. She warned that progress was being undermined by conflict, inequality and the “triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.”

She called for accelerated climate action, greater investment in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies, and support for a broader green transition.

“The challenge is not the lack of ideas, but the lack of speed,” she said. “So let’s speed up together.”

In his exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Červený also praised President Donald Trump for strengthening European politicians who favor a less regulatory approach.

“I’m glad that Mr. Donald Trump is president again, because this changed many things also in European countries,” he said, adding that the United States gives smaller countries such as the Czech Republic a stronger partner in debates in Brussels.

Červený said Europe does not need to abandon sustainability, but should pursue it gradually and in cooperation with industry.

Tate brothers to remain behind bars for now as UK seeks extradition on rape, trafficking charges

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will remain behind bars for now after appearing in federal court in Miami Monday, where they formally began fighting the United Kingdom’s bid to extradite the controversial brothers on dozens of charges, including rape and human trafficking.

During the brief hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis informed the brothers they were being held on a provisional arrest warrant from the U.K. and that extradition proceedings were already underway.

The judge later scheduled a status hearing for July 27 as the brothers prepare to challenge both the extradition request and whether they should remain in custody while the case moves forward.

Attorney Joseph McBride told reporters that the brothers are innocent and said he does not expect them to be released.

“There will be a series of hearings,” McBride said of the extradition process.

Andrew and Tristan Tate appeared wearing gray jail uniforms and shackles and each responded, “Yes, your honor,” when Judge Louis advised them of their rights.

The judge also explained that the proceeding was an extradition matter, not a criminal trial, and that the brothers would not be required to attend every hearing.

The brothers were arrested in Miami over the weekend after British authorities announced 38 additional charges involving four additional alleged victims.

Andrew Tate, 39, faces seven additional rape counts, as well as charges related to sex trafficking and indecent images of a child. Tristan Tate, 38, faces charges including two rape counts and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

British police said the new allegations bring the total number of charges against the brothers to 59. The alleged offenses are said to have occurred between July 2010 and August 2017.

“We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offenses including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child,” Malcolm McHaffie, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, said.

The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship, have denied wrongdoing.

They also face separate criminal proceedings in Romania, where authorities have been investigating them since December 2022.

“I want to make it clear there is no place for male violence against women and girls in our society and we will continue to work tirelessly to support victims and investigate all reports made to us,” said assistant chief constable Karena Thomas, lead for Britain’s Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit.

The brothers have built a large online following promoting their views on masculinity and wealth, while Andrew Tate has previously described himself as a misogynist.

Andrew Tate is additionally due to face a civil trial in Britain brought by four women who accuse him of physical and sexual abuse.

The four claimants, who have been granted anonymity, allege Tate subjected them to physical or sexual violence between 2013 and 2015. Two say they were in an intimate relationship with Tate, while two worked for his online webcam business.

Andrew Tate denies those allegations. In his written defense, his lawyers said the claims are false and that all sexual activity was consensual.

Mammalian meat allergy: The allergy that can make daily activities deadly

Mammalian meat allergy: The allergy that can make daily activities deadly

Despite increasing awareness, diagnosing a meat allergy can be difficult.

Symptoms often develop at night, hours after people have eaten their evening meal, and for those suffering asthma, the two can often be confused.

Van Nunen describes it as an “an anytime but not an every time allergy”.

Symptoms may sometimes not appear at all, while at other times they may be exacerbated by factors including the type of meat, how it is cooked and if it is spicy, as well as whether a person drinks alcohol with it, exercises after eating or is sleep deprived.

Those who are hypersensitive can also be triggered by mammalian products such as milk and anything that contains a derivative of mammal meat – beauty products and laundry softeners containing lanolin, for example, and even supermarket plastic bags containing stearic acid. Fumes from a barbecue, or petting a cat or dog, can also trigger an allergic reaction.

Elizabeth Rowley, a mother of three who lives in Hannam Vale on the mid north coast of New South Wales, spent years going to doctors and allergy specialists, hoping they could diagnose the mystery illness that plagued her.

But many dismissed her symptoms, which began in 2006 and ranged from memory loss and brain fog to chest pain, numbness in her arms, full body aches, and breathing difficulties that led to her regularly passing out.

“[They said] ‘you’re turning into a bit of a hypochondriac – it’s not anaphylaxis – get over it’,” she recalls.

She has since set up a Facebook group to support fellow sufferers.

“It’s just mentally horrendous more than anything, just trying to find out what it was,” she says. “I thought I was going crazy.”

Remy Williams, a 23-year-old psychology student who lives in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and was diagnosed with the allergy as a child, says the constant vigilance of watching what she ate tipped over into an eating disorder.

But the even bigger impact, she says, was witnessing the effect on her mother, who also had the allergy and twice suffered severe anaphylactic attacks on aeroplanes.

It was “incredibly scary,” says Remy. She “literally almost died in front of me.”

The body can handle five cups of coffee each day, experts say

The body can handle five cups of coffee each day, experts say

Caffeine lovers rejoice: The human body can safely handle an astonishing amount of coffee, according to a new statement from the American Heart Association.

Drinking up to five cups of black coffee each day appears to lower the risk of several cardiovascular conditions, including stroke, heart failure and heart disease. The latter is America’s top killer, accounting for over 919,000 deaths a year.

So it’s good news for the two-thirds of adults who drink coffee every day. Regularly consuming caffeinated beverages has also been linked to a lower risk of developing dementia and a reduced risk of cancer.

But consuming more than five cups – and exceeding the 400-milligram daily caffeine limit deemed safe by most experts – can be harmful to health, too, the association warned. Higher amounts may lead to seizures, sudden high blood pressure and breathing issues.

And beware of energy shots – which may contain 40-69 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce – between three and four times that of an eight-ounce cup of coffee.

“Energy drinks, bars, gels and caffeine-based supplements often contain other added ingredients that may increase the absorption of caffeine, may accelerate its effects on the body, may raise blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular harm,” the American Heart Association stated.

More research is necessary to investigate different health impacts of various types of caffeine products, the group added, noting that everyone responds to caffeine differently.

“What may be a reasonable amount for one person could cause unwanted effects, such as heart palpitations, anxiety or sleep disruption, in another,” Dr. Gregory Marcus, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, explained in a statement shared by the association.

“That’s why it’s important to pay attention to how your body responds to caffeine and talk with your healthcare team about what is right for you,” he said.

For some people, just a couple of cups of coffee can result in symptoms, like increased heart rate, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, nausea and upset stomach, headaches and the jitters, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

Toxic effects like seizures can occur when consuming around 1,200 milligrams, the agency says.

Fortunately, the average American only drinks around three cups a day – under the 400 milligram limit.

Quote of the Day by Friedrich Nietzsche “What makes unhappy marriages? It is not the lack of love but the absence of….”

Quote of the Day by Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche’s impact is intense and can be felt even now. He is one of the most misunderstood, debated and influential philosophers. He challenged conventional morality, religion, culture and human nature and many of his ideas were controversial in his own time, but today Nietzsche is regarded as one of the greatest thinkers in Western philosophy.Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was born on October 15, 1844 in Röcken, a small village in the then Kingdom of Prussia (now Germany). His father, a Lutheran pastor, died when Nietzsche was four years old. The loss was a heavy blow for the family and Nietzsche grew up in a home dominated by his mother, grandmother, two aunts and younger sister. He showed from an early age extraordinary intelligence and a love of literature, music and the classical languages. He went to the prestigious Schulpforta boarding school (one of the best educational institutions in Germany) where he was brilliant in Greek, Latin and philosophy. He then studied theology and classical philology at the University of Bonn, before transferring to the University of Leipzig. As a student he was captivated by the writings of philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer whose thoughts on human suffering influenced him greatly.A bright academic career:Nietzsche was recognised as brilliant remarkably early on. He became only 24 when he was appointed Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Basel in Switzerland, even before he had completed his doctorate—an unusual tribute to his remarkable scholarship. During these years he made the acquaintance of the famous composer Richard Wagner, whom he at first greatly admired. But the two men fell out when Nietzsche turned against Wagner’s nationalism and religious obsession.Nietzsche, at the age of 34, was forced to resign from his teaching post due to continuing ill health. He suffered from severe migraines, eye problems and long-term digestive disorders. Physically frail, this was to be the most productive period of his intellectual life. Now free from academic duties, he travelled across Switzerland, Italy and France, writing many of the books that would later make him famous. His revolutionary philosophy Nietzsche thought society believed things for the sake of it because they were passed down through the generations. His challenge to people was to question the accepted truths and think for themselves. Among his most famous ideas was the notion of the “Ubermensch” or “Overman” as introduced in his book, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Contrary to popular belief, Nietzsche was not calling for racial superiority. Instead he saw a person who always tried to better himself, who created his own values and did not conform to what society expected.Another famous phrase associated with Nietzsche is “God is dead.” This was not a celebration of atheism but an observation that the coming of modern science, rationality and changing social values had eroded traditional religious authority in Europe. He also proposed the idea of the “will to power,” that humans are driven not just by survival or pleasure, but by a desire to grow, achieve, create and conquer challenges. In every piece of writing he wrote, Nietzsche urged people to confront the difficulties of life rather than run from them. He believed that suffering, setbacks and hardship often lay the foundation for personal growth and strength. His principal works Nietzsche wrote many influential books that are still studied all over the world. Among his more important works are-The Birth of Tragedy (1870), Human, All Too Human (1878), Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883–1885), Beyond Good and Evil, 1886, On the Genealogy of Morals (1887) and The Gay Science (1887). These books sold commercially during his lifetime although later they changed philosophy, psychology, literature and political thought.Nietzsche lived in Turin, Italy when in 1889 he had a complete mental break down. He was reported to have seen a horse being savagely whipped in the street and rushed to embrace the animal before collapsing. What exactly happened is disputed by historians, but it became symbolic of his mental collapse. It’s unclear what triggered his mental illness. Some have attributed it to syphilis; others have speculated it was due to a neurological disorder or genetic condition. Nietzsche never really recovered from the collapse. His mother cared for him until her death, and his sister Elisabeth took over. Nietzsche died at the age of 55 on 25 August 1900. It is ironic that the philosopher who struggled for recognition in his own lifetime should have become one of the most influential intellectual figures of the twentieth century. His impact on the worldNietzsche’s influence stretches far beyond philosophy. His insights into the human mind were admired by psychologist Carl Jung, and Sigmund Freud acknowledged Nietzsche’s deep understanding of unconscious motivation. Existentialist philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus took many of his ideas about freedom, meaning and responsibility and developed them. His writings also inspired such authors as Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse and André Gide. His ideas are still influential among artists, film makers and musicians today. But there is also a wrong reading of Nietzsche’s legacy. After his death his sister Elisabeth, who controlled much of his unpublished writing, edited his work selectively, associating it with German nationalism. In the later period, the Nazi regime falsely claimed Nietzsche as one of its intellectual influences. The interpretation is overwhelmingly rejected by modern scholars. Nietzsche was a harsh critic of antisemitism, nationalism and blind obedience. His philosophy was based on individual freedom, not political ideology.Quote of the DayOne of the most iconic quotes of Friedrich Nietzsche is, “What makes unhappy marriages? It is not the lack of love but the absence of friendship. The quote is one of Nietzsche’s deepest insights into human relationships. When people think of successful marriages they often think of romance, attraction and passion. These feelings surely play an important role in bringing two people together. But, as Nietzsche argues, romantic love alone is not enough to sustain a partnership for life. Friendship is formed of elements that last longer than passion naturally changes. Friends trust each other. They respect each other’s individuality. They like being with each other even if there is no excitement or celebration. They laugh together, share in each other’s failures and truly care about each other’s growth.Romantic attraction alone can make relationships hard when life gets tough. All relationships are inevitably under pressure from financial problems, the responsibilities of parenthood, illness, career problems and old age. Often in such moments alone intense passion is not enough. Friendship offers a stability that romance can’t always provide. When spouses become true friends, they speak plainly, forgive mistakes more easily, and cheer each other’s victories without jealousy. They’re teammates, not rivals.” They accept each other’s flaws, and learn to appreciate each other’s strengths, rather than try to change each other.Nietzsche’s quote is a reminder that emotional intimacy often begins with friendship and not dramatic declarations of love. Often, the couples who create stronger relationships are the ones who stay curious about one another, keep sharing experiences, and genuinely enjoy each other’s company, not the ones that rely on romantic feelings alone. This observation is still remarkably relevant more than a century after Nietzsche’s death. In an age of often exaggerated romance, social media spectacles and great gestures, Nietzsche reminds us that the value of everyday companionship may be even greater. The strongest marriages are seldom perfect. They are instead partnerships where two people keep encouraging, challenging and supporting each other through the changing seasons of life.

Ofcom unable to take further legal action against suicide forum

Ofcom unable to take further legal action against suicide forum

Ofcom said it is unable to take further legal action against a pro-suicide forum which campaigners say has been linked to over 130 UK deaths.

The regulator said, external the site had blocked access for the “vast majority” of UK users, and it had “no further legal routes available” under the Online Safety Act.

But it accepted people would still be able to access the forum by using a VPN, which hides your location online.

Andy Burrows, chief executive of the Molly Rose Foundation, said the decision to take no further legal action would “result in more lost lives” and that announcing it on the day a new prime minister was named showed “an utter lack of moral courage”.

In response, an Ofcom spokesperson said it had made the decision a “matter of days ago” following “months of work to exhaust all possible legal routes”.

They said bereaved families were informed of the decision this morning after being contacted last week.

“In that context, we do not consider it appropriate to delay the announcement further to accommodate today’s political developments,” they said.

Meanwhile, Ofcom enforcement director Suzanne Cater said the regulator had used its powers “to the fullest extent possible”.

“We’ll continue to monitor the forum closely to check the geoblock remains in place,” she said.

The geoblock means people based in the UK are unable to access the site, unless they mask their location through a VPN or similar means.

Ofcom said it was working with the government to explore whether its enforcement powers should be strengthened.

In particular, this concerns its ability to get a website blocking order through the courts, which would legally mandate internet service providers in the UK to block the website.

The regulator says it has reached the limit of what it can legally do under the Online Safety Act because the forum has implemented the geoblock.

The BBC has approached the government for comment.
