Bees at your door? Here’s what every homeowner actually needs to know | – The Times of India

Not every buzz is a threat. Know your bees before you act.Image Credits: Google Gemini

Let’s be honest: your first reaction to a buzz near the window or a bunch of bees partying under the porch is not “how fascinating,” more like panic, a quick Google spiral and maybe a frantic grab for whatever spray you have under the kitchen sink. Before you do anything rash, take a breath. Most of the time, bees are just minding their own business, and knowing the difference between a minor inconvenience and a genuine problem can save you money, stress, and frankly, some guilt. Here’s what you really need to know. What kind of bee are you dealing with? Not all buzzing things are the same, and this is more important than most people realise. The little fuzzy ones that fly over your garden flowers? Harmless. Let them be, but if you see a lot of activity around a specific spot, a gap in your siding, a corner of your attic, or a water meter box, that’s when you need to look more closely.Honeybees are social insects that build large colonies. The nest infrastructure of a honeybee colony, made from beeswax into repeating hexagonal cells, is central to the way the colony functions and reproduces, according to The Biology of the Honey Bee. They are not aggressive by nature, but they will defend their home if they are threatened. Interestingly, studies have shown that a bee’s upbringing is as important as its species. Bees grown in high-aggression environments actually turn more aggressive as adults, a study in Scientific Reports finds. So if you agitate a colony, you are not only dealing with an angry bee today, you are effectively training the next generation to be more defensiveCarpenter bees, however, work in solitude. They bore neat, tidy holes in your wood trim or siding that are a nuisance but rarely cause serious structural damage. Then there are the Africanized honeybees. If you are in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma or Arkansas, this is worth knowing about. They look exactly like regular honeybees, but behave much differently. They are much more defensive, much faster to swarm, and they will chase a threat much farther. If you think you might be dealing with these, skip the DIY route and call a pro. That scary swarm outside your house? It’s probably fineIf you have ever been outside and seen a huge swarm of bees hanging from a tree branch like something out of a nature documentary, you know the feeling. It looks terrifying, but it usually isn’t.

Image

The fuzzy ones hovering over your flowers are the least of your worries.

Swarming happens when a honeybee colony gets too large, and the queen takes half the bees with her to find a new home. They often stop somewhere temporarily in transit, a branch, a fence post, or sometimes an unfortunate mailbox. In fact, this is the time of year when they are the least aggressive, as they have no hive to defend. The move? Stand clear, keep your pets indoors and wait. Most swarms disappear in less than 24 hours. The problem comes when they don’t move on, when they find a nice little gap in your wall or a quiet corner of your attic and decide that’s home. Then you have to move quickly. The longer you wait, the more honeycomb and honey they build up, making it that much more difficult and expensive to remove. Contact your local cooperative extension service or a beekeeper. Many will move the colony rather than destroy it.What not to doSpraying the entrance. If bees are getting into your wall through a small opening, spraying insecticide into that opening won’t reach the colony; it will just annoy the bees at the entrance. Worse, dying bees emit an alarm signal that causes the rest of the colony to defend itself.Blocking the entry point. It just means the bees are trapped and will have to find another way out, possibly into your living space.Waiting it out once they’ve moved in. A colony isn’t just some swarm that just leaves. The longer you wait, the larger the job gets. How to make your home less attractive to beesFill any cracks larger than 1/8 inch around your foundation, windows, pipes and chimney. A bee needs only that to be convinced a spot is worth exploring. Use fine-mesh screening (also under 1/8 inch) anywhere you need airflow. Keep your trash cans covered and clean. Foraging bees are attracted to sugary residue from soda cans or juice bottles. If you have fruit trees, grab anything that falls to the ground before it becomes a point of interest. Do you have bare or patchy spots on your lawn? That’s prime real estate for ground-nesting bees. Fill them in to destroy the appeal. The bottom lineBees are not your enemy; they are one of the most important creatures in our food system. However, that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. Understand what you are dealing with, act fast if you see a colony starting to build up in an undesired location and call in a professional if needed.Coexistence is feasible. You just have to understand the rules.

Six low-maintenance flowers your garden needs right now | – The Times of India

Six low-maintenance flowers your garden needs right now | – The Times of India

A stunning garden doesn’t have to be hard work. Just start with the right plants.Image Credits: Google Gemini

If you think gardening is buying a plant and letting it sit on your porch until it eventually gives up on life, you are not alone. Most millennials didn’t exactly grow up learning how to deadhead roses or test the pH of the soil. And, honestly? With work, screens, and the chaos of being an adult, who has the time? Here’s the truth: you don’t need a degree in horticulture or to sacrifice your weekends to have a beautiful garden. Some flowers basically grow themselves, ones that can handle drought, shrug off neglect and still look fabulous from May to October. The list is surprisingly beginner-friendly.Start with coneflowers; they basically take care of themselvesIf you’re west of the Mississippi, narrow-leaf coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) is your new BFF. It is drought-tolerant, grows well in lean, dry soil and doesn’t require much fussing. The purple-ish blooms are a pollinator magnet, which means butterflies and bees will show up uninvited.Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) does the same thing in slightly damper conditions for those on the East Coast or in wetter climates. In either case, you will have large, bright blooms with minimal effort.Black-eyed Susans are basically the golden retrievers of flowersBlack-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia) are the flower that never disappoints; friendly, hardy, easy to love. They bloom with bright yellow flowers in late summer and fall, right when everything else in the garden is beginning to look tired. They are short-lived as perennials go, but they self-seed readily, so they keep coming back whether you remember to replant them or not.Lavender is not just for candlesGrowing lavender is far less complicated than the wellness industry would have you believe. It loves full sun, hates overwatering and thrives in dry, rocky soil, all conditions that are very easy to provide. Once established, it blooms from May to October and fills your yard with that scent you’ve been paying $14 a candle for. You can cut it, dry it, use it in the kitchen, or just leave it sitting there looking pretty. Here’s what makes lavender even more compelling. A study in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science found that drought stress significantly impacted the quality and composition of lavender’s essential oil. Plants experiencing extreme water stress yielded more than double the oil of well-watered plants, and the drought-related changes were linked to more powerful antibacterial activity, particularly against bacteria that cause foodborne illness. In other words, the plant’s stress response makes it more potent. Lavender is a Mediterranean native and is pretty much designed for low-maintenance American summers.

From black-eyed Susans to stonecrop, some of the most beautiful garden plants are also the most forgiving. Image Credits: Google Gemini

Yarrow is the one that goes everywhereYarrow (Achillea) is the overachiever of low-maintenance gardening. It blooms from June to October, and according to research in Molecules, can even last until the first frost. It tolerates both dry and wet soil, handles full sun without complaint, and comes in yellow, pink, red and white. It is one of the toughest garden plants that also provides long blooms. It is also a serious pollinator draw, which is increasingly important as bee populations continue to decline. The same study notes that yarrow has secretory tissues in its flowers that produce essential oils to attract bees and butterflies, as well as specialised petal cells that help insects land and stay on the flower. For shady spots, bishop’s hat is unbeatableMost people avoid the shady corners of their yard. Don’t. The Bishop’s hat (Epimedium) is the gold standard for plants that love dry shade. This long-lived, low-demand plant sports dainty spring flowers over attractive foliage that often turns lovely fall colours. It’s basically houseplant energy, but outside in the soil, taking care of itself.Stonecrop is for people who forget to waterSedum, better known as stonecrop, is a succulent that deserves a place in the ground as much as it does a pot. It is heat and drought-tolerant and comes in a huge variety of colours and sizes. Late-season kinds, such as Autumn Joy, bloom in pink clusters and attract butterflies late into fall. If you have killed every plant you’ve ever owned, start here. You can have a beautiful garden without making it a second jobThe myth that a good garden takes constant work is mostly a myth, or at least it doesn’t have to be your reality. Choosing the right plants for your climate and soil type means most of the heavy lifting is already done. Native plants that are well-suited to the climate, such as coneflowers, yarrow and black-eyed Susans, have evolved to thrive in the conditions that already exist in your backyard. You don’t have to be a plant person to pull this off. You just have to begin with something that wants to grow.

Hundreds of Google workers urge CEO to refuse classified AI work with Pentagon

Hundreds of Google employees are urging CEO Sundar Pichai to refuse to make the company’s artificial intelligence tools available for the Pentagon in classified settings.

In an open letter to the chief executive, Google workers assigned to AI systems voiced concerns about the tech giant’s ongoing negotiations with the U.S. Department of Defense, saying the technology not appropriate for “classified workloads.”

“We feel that our proximity to this technology creates a responsibility to highlight and prevent its most unethical and dangerous uses,” the letter read. “Therefore, we ask you to refuse to make our AI systems available for classified workloads.”

Neither Google nor the Pentagon immediately responded to CBS News’ request for comment on the letter.

They fear that if made available for military applications, Google’s AI systems could be used in “inhumane or extremely harmful ways,” the employees wrote.

The letter cited lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance as examples of potentially harmful applications of AI.

“Making the wrong call right now would cause irreparable damage to Google’s reputation, business and role in the world,” the letter added.

Google is negotiating a possible deal with the Defense Department to deploy its AI in classified work, according to reporting from The Information

OpenAI earlier this year struck an agreement with the Pentagon, which agreed not to use Open AI technology for mass domestic surveillance or to direct autonomous weapons systems.

Iraq’s dominant bloc taps newcomer Ali al-Zaidi for prime minister after weeks of wrangling

Iraq’s dominant bloc taps newcomer Ali al-Zaidi for prime minister after weeks of wrangling

BAGHDAD — BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq’s dominant parliamentary bloc on Monday nominated Ali al-Zaidi, a businessman and political newcomer, to be the country’s prime minister.

The announcement by the Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite parties allied with Iran, followed a meeting at the government palace. It came after weeks of internal debate among its member parties aimed at selecting a compromise candidate to lead the next government.

President Nizar Amidi then tasked al-Zaidi with forming a government. Even with the backing of the dominant bloc, the new government is not assured of receiving the required number of votes.

The coalition had previously said it would back former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who the U.S. administration views as too close to Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump publicly announced his opposition to al-Maliki and threatened to cut off aid to Iraq if he was appointed.

While al-Maliki remained defiant after Trump’s intervention, the bloc decided to shift to a compromise candidate.

In a statement announcing al-Zaidi’s nomination, the Coordination Framework thanked al-Maliki and incumbent Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani for their “historic and responsible positions” in withdrawing their candidacies to help overcome the political deadlock. Al-Sudani issued a statement congratulating al-Zaidi.

Al-Zaidi, who is chairman of Al-Janoob Islamic Bank, emerged in the final stages of discussions as one of the leading candidates, bolstered by his economic background and business and investment connections. He has not previously held political office.

Following his nomination, al-Zaidi promised to focus on making Iraq “a balanced country, regionally and internationally.”

“This appointment comes at a sensitive time that requires concerted efforts from all political and social forces,” he said.

Under the constitution, the designated prime minister has 30 days to present a Cabinet lineup to the parliament, which requires 167 votes to secure a vote of confidence.

The next government will have to deal with the political and economic fallout of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which spilled over into Iraq while the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted the oil exports on which Iraq’s economy depends.

The new government will also face challenges in dealing with the issues of corruption, uncontrolled weapons outside state authority, and the future of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of Shiite militias that are nominally under the Iraqi military but in practice largely outside of its control.

Rectal cancer deaths rising up to three times faster in specific age group, study finds

Rectal cancer deaths rising up to three times faster in specific age group, study finds

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rectal cancer deaths are rising at a significantly faster rate than colon cancer among younger Americans, a trend that researchers warn will continue to escalate without a shift in treatment.

Mortality rates for rectal cancer are growing two to three times faster than those for colon cancer among adults aged 20 to 44, according to a study to be presented at Digestive Disease Week 2026 in Chicago.

The data suggests that for older millennials, specifically those between the ages of 35 and 44, rectal cancer mortality is projected to escalate through 2035.

BRAIN AGING MAY ACCELERATE AFTER CANCER TREATMENT, STUDY SUGGESTS

Colorectal cancer is no longer considered predominantly a disease of older adults,” said lead author Mythili Menon Pathiyil, a gastroenterology fellow at SUNY Upstate Medical University. “Rectal cancer, especially, is becoming a growing problem in younger individuals.”

The researchers analyzed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) death records from 1999 to 2023.

Using a machine learning model to project future trends, the team found that the mortality gap between the two types of cancer is widening across every demographic.

MORE AMERICANS MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS OBESE UNDER NEW DEFINITION, STUDY SUGGESTS

A primary concern raised by the research is the diagnostic delay often experienced by younger patients.

“Young people are being diagnosed with rectal cancers at increasingly younger ages — and often at more advanced, aggressive stages of disease,” Rachel Gordon, M.D., a New York-based colorectal and general surgeon at Episcopal Health Services, told Fox News Digital.

While older adults typically begin treatment within a month of symptoms appearing, it takes an average of seven months for young adults to move from first symptoms to treatment. (iStock)

“We’re seeing a combination of lifestyle and environmental exposures, including diet and changes in the gut microbiome, potentially playing a role,” said Gordon, who was not involved in the study.

Pathiyil noted that primary care providers often dismiss red-flag symptoms in young people — such as rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits — as benign conditions like hemorrhoids.

“If something doesn’t feel right, or if you experience symptoms such as rectal bleeding (bright red or dark), persistent changes in bowel habits (including diarrhea or constipation), narrow stools, a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss or fatigue, it’s important to see your doctor promptly,” Gordon advised.

The findings suggest that current screening strategies may need to be reevaluated, according to Pathiyil.

“Our study shows that rectal cancer is driving much of the increase in colorectal cancers,” she added.

Inside the McDonald’s Stranger Things Happy Meals

Inside the McDonald’s Stranger Things Happy Meals

McDonald’s and Netflix are launching their first line of Happy Meal toys together with a special tribute to the streaming service’s new series, Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85.

The Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Happy Meal is inspired by Eric Robles’s animated show, a spinoff of the supernatural drama Stranger Things, which concluded in December.

According to a Friday press release, the new McDonald’s meal includes one of 12 collectable character toys — with two new personalities revealed weekly — a Stranger Things activity book and a QR code that unlocks an interactive game, where players help save Hawkins, the fictional Midwestern town in the Netflix series.

For their meal, customers can choose between a four-piece or six-piece Chicken McNuggets or a burger, along with fries, a drink and apple slices.

The new boxes will be available in McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. starting May 5. The Happy Meals will then launch in different countries worldwide, including Brazil, Singapore, Norway, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Italy and India.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, released April 23 on Netflix, is set in the months-long narrative void between the end of Stranger Things’s second season and the start of its third. The original series’ main characters return, with Eleven, Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Max attempting to solve a terrifying mystery in order to save Hawkins. However, the animated cast is not voiced by the same actors in Stranger Things.

Aside from the Stranger Things-themed meal, Netflix recently worked with McDonald’s to launch a KPop Demon Hunters-inspired menu. The menu options, which launched March 31, include two limited-edition adult combo meals — one for HUNTR/X and one for the Saja Boys, the two rival KPop groups in Netflix’s hit animated movie.

The Saja Boys Breakfast Meal, only available during breakfast hours, consists of a Sausage McMuffin with Egg topped with a peppery Spicy Saja Sauce, alongside Hash Browns and a small “soda pop.”

Fans who order the rival HUNTR/X meal for lunch or dinner receive a 10-piece order of Chicken McNuggets, a medium soft drink and Ramyeon McShaker Fries — which have a soy, garlic, sesame and spice seasoning inspired by the ramen that the KPop girl group enjoys in the movie. To enjoy the side, customers sprinkle the umami seasoning into a McShaker bag, add the fries and shake it to distribute.

The menu also includes the Derpy McFlurry, which McDonald’s says “blends creamy vanilla soft serve with berry popping pearls, enrobed in a wild berry sauce.”

Melania Trump blasts Jimmy Kimmel’s jokes before correspondents’ dinner as “hateful and violent rhetoric”

Melania Trump blasts Jimmy Kimmel’s jokes before correspondents’ dinner as “hateful and violent rhetoric”

First lady Melania Trump, in a rare statement Monday, called jokes made by comedian Jimmy Kimmel days before the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner “hateful and violent rhetoric.” President Trump joined the first lady’s criticism of Kimmel and called for the late-night host to be fired.

“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America,” Melania Trump posted on social media. “People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.”

Melania Trump was sitting next to Mr. Trump on Saturday at the correspondents’ dinner when gunshots rang out and they were evacuated from the ballroom. No one was injured and the suspected gunman, Cole Allen, was tackled and taken into custody. He is set to appear in federal court on Monday.

On his show on Thursday, Kimmel took “a page from the Kid Rock alternative half-time show” and created a mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which has featured comedians in the past but this year was set to feature mentalist Oz Pearlman. In the skit, Kimmel referred to Melania Trump as having a “glow like an expectant widow.”

The first lady said that ABC should “take a stand” against Kimmel.

On Monday afternoon, the president explicitly called for Kimmel to be fired.

“I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale,” the president wrote on Truth Social. “Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.”

CBS News has reached out to ABC for comment.

Kimmel was pulled from the air for several nights in September after being criticized by conservatives, including Mr. Trump, for his remarks in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk assassination. Kimmel had said that America “hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

Kimmel did not issue a blanket apology for the remarks, but he did say he could see how they were offensive to some. When he returned to the air on Sept. 23, he said it was “not my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what was obviously a deeply disturbed individual,” referring to the alleged gunman, who is in custody pending trial.
