Is your rug ageing too fast? Here is what you are probably missing | – The Times of India

Your favorite area rug is slowly losing the battle against your feet, but a simple habit can turn that around.

You have probably noticed it: that one sad, flat patch right in front of the couch, or the worn strip from the front door to the kitchen. Your rug did not just give up; it got walked into its end. Rugs flatten over time because of something completely unavoidable: foot traffic. Every step compresses the fibres; every pair of sneakers, boots, or bare feet leaves a little mark. In the spots where you walk most often, that flattening happens faster than you would think. The good news? There is a genuinely simple fix that most people never bother with, but before we get there, let us talk about what is actually happening under your feet. The science of a worn-out rugMost people do not realise that walking does more damage to their floor covering than they think. The research in the journal Tribology International found that foot traffic wears down flooring over time, which directly lowers the slip resistance, which is the friction that keeps you from sliding. Over time, tiny bits of wear from shoe soles get ground into the fibres, which breaks them down.It is not just the fibres themselves, either. A separate study, Association of size-resolved airborne particles with foot traffic inside a carpeted hallway, published in Atmospheric Environment on indoor air quality, found that airborne particle levels in carpeted hallways varied by up to 90% with foot traffic. Every time someone walks on a rug, they disturb settled dust and debris. The debris acts like sandpaper on the carpet fibres, wearing them down from the inside. Why do some spots get hit harder than others? Not all rug wear is the same. The places that get the worst damage are the ones where you naturally walk every day. You probably walk the same path from the couch to the TV cabinet in your living room. Everyone walks on the same strip of floor in a hallway, and that repetition is what causes wear to build up.The kind of shoes you wear is also important. Heavier, less flexible shoes put more pressure on each step, which means that your hiking boots or chunky sneakers are harder on your rugs than a pair of soft slippers. The result? Uneven flattening. The middle of your rug might look brand new, while the spots that are most walked on are barely alive.

Image

Every step compresses those fibers a little more than you would think.

The simple habit that actually works: Rotate your rugThis is where you get your easy fix. Rotating your rug, flipping it, and swapping its position redistributes foot traffic. The worn strip gets a break, a fresh section steps up, and the wear evens out.The frequency of the rotation depends on the foot traffic in the particular room where your rug is placed. Those that see higher traffic, such as an entryway or a living room, need to be rotated every three months, and those with less traffic, such as a bedroom or a reading corner, every six months.Do not just rotate, maintainRotation works best when paired with a few other habits. You need to vacuum your rugs regularly, not just to keep them clean, but also because the dirt and grit trapped in the fibres are wearing them down from the inside. Removing that debris slows down the wear cycle. Consider getting a rug pad. A good underpad cushions each step, which lessens the pressure that flattens fibres. Suppose you can, try to get people to wear soft shoes inside. This one is harder to enforce with guests, but it really does help your rug keep its texture longer. The bottom lineYour rug is going to age, and that is just how physics works, but the difference between a rug that looks great after five years and one that looks tired at year two is just one simple habit: rotating it. Rotating your rug will take just 10 minutes, cost nothing, and the science backs it up. So next time you are doing a deep clean, flip that rug around. Your floors and your future self will thank you.

Meta failed to protect social media users from scam ads, lawsuit alleges

Meta failed to protect social media users from scam ads, lawsuit alleges

A new lawsuit alleges that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, misled users about the company’s efforts to prevent scams on its platforms.

The Consumer Federation of America (CFA), a nonprofit advocacy group that filed the complaint in Washington, D.C., superior court, alleges Meta failed to block ads that could pose a risk to users while charging those advertisers more to display their content.

“Meta has adopted policies and practices that it knows allow scam advertisements to proliferate on its platforms while simultaneously profiting off those ads at its users’ expense,” CFA states in the suit.

The group also accused Meta of downplaying the scale of fraud on its apps, creating a “false impression of safety” for users.

“As Americans lose more and more money to online scams, Meta has consistently chosen to prioritize profit over the safety of their users,” Ben Winters, director of AI and data privacy at the CFA, said in a statement.

CFA alleges that Meta’s actions violate a Washington, D.C., consumer protection law. The group is seeking damages and to recover what it claims were illegal profits the tech giant earned from its ads.

A Meta spokesperson said CFA’s allegations “misrepresent the reality of our work” and that the company aggressively combats scams on its platforms.

“Last year alone, we removed over 159 million scam ads, 92% of which we took down before anyone reported them, and took down 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram associated with criminal scam centers,” the spokesperson told CBS News in an email.

Meta also continues to invest in new technologies to combat securities investment and other scams, the company said.

New York sues Coinbase and Gemini, seeking to halt unlicensed prediction market businesses

New York sues Coinbase and Gemini, seeking to halt unlicensed prediction market businesses

NEW YORK — New York is suing Coinbase and Gemini over unregulated and unlicensed prediction market platforms that the state contends are illegal gambling operations.

Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit, filed Tuesday in state court in Manhattan, seeks to bar the companies’ platforms from operating in the state unless and until they obtain licenses from the state Gaming Commission.

“Gambling by another name is still gambling, and it is not exempt from regulation under our state laws and Constitution,” James said in a statement. “Gemini and Coinbase’s so-called prediction markets are just illegal gambling operations, exposing young people to addictive platforms that lack the necessary guardrails.”

Messages seeking comment were left for Coinbase and Gemini. Both companies began as cryptocurrency trading platforms before branching into the prediction space, which has been dominated by Kalshi and Polymarket.

Gemini, founded by brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, launched Gemini Predictions in December. Coinbase started its prediction markets service in January.

“Crypto was just the beginning,” Gemini’s website said Tuesday, next to a prediction box offering bets on such things as the winner of that day’s Chelsea-Brighton Premier League soccer match, when Kevin Warsh will be confirmed as the chairman of the Federal Reserve, and what the price of oil will be Friday.

New York’s lawsuit alleges that the Coinbase and Gemini are seeking “to avoid the legal and financial consequences” of the state’s close regulation of gambling “by offering what is quintessentially wagering under the guise of offering ‘event contracts’ on a ‘prediction market.’”

By operating without licenses, the lawsuit says, Coinbase’s and Gemini’s prediction market businesses aren’t paying the same taxes as licensed casinos and mobile sportsbooks, which are taxed by the state at a rate of approximately 51% of gross revenues. In addition, the lawsuit says, Coinbase and Gemini allow users as young as 18, while state law prohibits wagering by anyone under 21.

Kalshi sued the state Gaming Commission in October after the commission sought to bar the company’s prediction market business from operating in the state. In the case, which is ongoing, Kalshi argues that, as a federally designated derivatives exchange, it is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Coinbase made the same argument in December when it sued Connecticut, Michigan and Illinois to block those states from attempting to regulate its prediction business. Earlier this month, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued Arizona, Connecticut, and Illinois to block them from policing prediction markets.

Last week, a federal judge halted Arizona’s regulatory efforts — which have included criminal charges against Kalshi — finding that the federal commission had demonstrated a reasonable chance of success in showing that the act preempts Arizona law.

Nearly 500 alleged MS-13 members in El Salvador face a sweeping mass trial

Nearly 500 alleged MS-13 members in El Salvador face a sweeping mass trial

SAN SALVADOR — Prosecutors in El Salvador opened a massive consolidated trial against nearly 500 alleged members of the MS-13 gang accused of tens of thousands of crimes including homicide, extortion and arms trafficking.

The joint trial, which opened Monday in San Salvador, is the latest in a practice that has been criticized by human rights groups as an infringement of the rights of the accused to defend themselves. Such trials form part of President Nayib Bukele’s iron fist approach against criminal groups in El Salvador, which has been under a state of emergency for four years to fight organized crime.

The 486 defendants are accused of being members of MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, and accused of ordering more than 47,000 crimes from 2012 to 2022, according to the Salvadoran government. The crimes also include femicide and enforced disappearances.

“For years, this structure has operated systematically, causing fear and mourning among Salvadoran families,” Attorney General Rodolfo Delgado said on social media.

El Salvador once had one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with 103 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015. Since Bukele took office in 2019, government statistics show a drastic drop in homicdes. But human rights groups say Bukele’s aproach has violated due process.

Mass trials “undermine the exercise of the right to defense and the presumption of innocence of detainees,” U.N. experts have said.

The gang leaders are being tried in an open hearing at an Organized Crime Court under a 2023 reform of El Salvador’s Penal Code.

The country’s “state of exception” since March 2022 has suspended fundamental rights, including the right to be informed of the reasons for detention and the right to access legal counsel. Security forces can also intercept telecommunications without a court order, and detention without a preliminary hearing is extended from 72 hours to 15 days.

In a statement Tuesday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said it “maintains serious worries about the impact on human rights by the unjustified and excessive prolongation of the state of exception in El Salvador” and called on the government to end the measure.

Of the defendants, 413 are being held at the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a maximum-security prison that Bukele ordered built that has become a symbol of his controversial security policies. Many defendants watched the proceedings virtually from the prison.

Another 73 alleged gang members are being prosecuted in absentia, as permitted by law, according to the Attorney General’s office.

In the first such collective trial in March 2025, 52 members of the Barrio 18 gang were sentenced to up to 245 years in prison.

In another collective trial in November 2025, a court found 45 members of a rival faction, Barrio 18 Sureños, guilty of various crimes, including extortion and homicide. It imposed a 397-year prison sentence on one leader.

Since the state of emergency began, authorities say they have arrested 91,300 people allegedly belonging or tied to gangs.

Human rights organizations say thousands have been arbitrarily detained and that they have registered more than 6,000 complaints filed by victims under the state of emergency. At least 500 people have died in state custody.

Bukele has acknowledged that at least 8,000 innocent people were arrested under the measure and have since have been released.

McDonald’s new value menu debuts today – but fast-food giant ends other deal program

McDonald’s new value menu debuts today – but fast-food giant ends other deal program

McDonald’s rolled out a new value menu Tuesday, but the chain may have also served customers a side of disappointment by ending a popular deal program.

The new value menu, announced last month, features a range of breakfast, lunch and dinner items priced under $3, in what the company said is an effort to give customers more flexible options.

However, the new value menu program does away with its buy-one, add-one-for-$1 option, which previously let customers add a second item for $1 when they purchased a full-priced item of equal or lesser value. Therefore, whether the change actually saves money depends on how and where customers order, with experts noting that the menu’s value can vary by location, even within the same market.

Some customers may also be less impressed, as certain items included in the new under-$3 deals were already being sold at similar price points in their local markets, according to fourth-quarter data from Technomic, which tracks menu pricing, Fast Company reports.

“McDonald’s is always experimenting with the architecture of their value offerings,” Heather Nelson, senior director of syndicated research at Technomic, told the outlet. “As a marketing tactic, this is designed to draw more attention to the value they were providing.”

Earlier this month, a McDonald’s spokesperson said the updated McValue menu is designed to better reflect what customers want — more flexibility in how they choose their meals — when asked how it stacks up against the previous version in terms of savings.

When asked earlier this month about how the updated McValue menu compares in terms of savings, a McDonald’s spokesperson told Fast Company: “The Under $3 Menu delivers on what [customers have] told us matters most: consistently great prices on their favorite items and the freedom to order what they want, when they want – no bundling required. Alongside other everyday value offerings like Meal Deals, customers now have more options to choose from – whether they’re looking for a quick snack or a complete meal.”

The new McValue menu keeps the $5 Meal Deal, introduced in 2024 amid inflation-driven price hikes that made headlines. However, the McDouble version of the deal now costs $6, a price that many locations were already charging due to higher operating costs in different markets, Fast Company reports.

Stephen A Smith refuses to call golfers, NASCAR drivers athletes: ‘That don’t count’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Stephen A. Smith might marvel at the skills of golfers and NASCAR drivers, but he praises them with caution.

Smith said the professionals are “elite at what they do,” but he is drawing a line when describing them.

On his SiriusXM show, while debating some of the greatest athletes of all time, a caller suggested NASCAR legend Richard Petty, and Smith launched into a rant.

“Come on, man. That don’t count. You driving a car!” Smith began, via Awful Announcing. “I’m being honest. It’s a great sport. But come on, bro. Getting behind the wheel of a car is not the same.

“You can be behind the wheel of a car in your 60s and 70s for crying out loud.”

Smith also insinuated that “just because you gotta walk the course for 18 holes for four days, that don’t make you an athlete.”

STEPHEN A SMITH SAYS HE BELIEVES DIANNA RUSSINI AND MIKE VRABEL ARE INNOCENT – FOR NOW

“They’re skilled players, they’re elite at what they do. But athletes? Athletes? Are you kidding me? Is walking the latest sport that you want to turn into an Olympic sport? Because I guess that would make them athletic, right?” Smith continued.

“Because they can walk. If you’re out there doing stuff that grandmas and grandpas can do, I’m not gonna look at you that way. You’re skilled, you’re phenomenally skilled as a golfer … but that is not an athletic sport.”

Florida wildfire map as warnings issued: “Dangerous”

Florida wildfire map as warnings issued: “Dangerous”

Florida remains on high alert for fast‑moving wildfires as red flag warnings blanket much of the state, with officials warning that dry fuels, gusty winds and critically low humidity are creating dangerous fire conditions.

Fire danger has surged amid a prolonged statewide drought, with 113 wildfires burning across Florida on Tuesday alone, according to the Florida Forest Service. The current blazes have consumed nearly 13,000 acres of land. In addition to the flames already raging, National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists and Forest Service authorities warn that even small sparks could quickly turn into large, difficult‑to‑contain fires.

NWS offices in Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Miami and Melbourne have all issued red flag warnings on Tuesday, citing gusty winds and low relative humidities. The warnings extend through the evening across much of the Florida Peninsula, including west‑central, southwest, northeast and interior east‑central Florida.

“Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly,” the NWS warned in multiple fire weather statements, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and remain alert as fire behavior could become erratic.

A wildfire map maintained by the Florida Forest Service shows fires scattered across nearly every region of the state, underscoring the scope of the threat. Meteorologists described fire risk levels as “critical” in parts of west‑central Florida, as persistent drought conditions continue to stress vegetation and dry out soils.

“Drought conditions, low humidity, and winds have led @NWS to issue Red Flag Warnings for most inland regions in northeast, central & southwest Florida,” the Florida Forest Service posted on X on Tuesday. “Officials do not recommend any outdoor burning. 38 Florida counties have current burn bans.”

The heightened fire danger comes after evacuations earlier this week linked to wildfires in north Florida, including in Alachua County, where a local emergency declaration was issued as crews battled flames near residential areas. Officials have not ruled out additional evacuations if conditions worsen statewide.

On Tuesday, Alachua County officials warned that the wildfires were producing smoke that would continue to impact nearby communities. In some cases, people were told to stay indoors or even leave the area if they had health conditions that made them susceptible to the effects of breathing in smoke.

“Smoke from ongoing wildfires may continue to affect surrounding communities and counties, with impacts already seen as far as Levy and Marion counties. Additional fires could worsen conditions,” the post on X said.

Forecasters say Florida’s fire threat is being compounded by the lack of meaningful rainfall over recent weeks. Much of the state remains in moderate to extreme drought, limiting moisture recovery even during overnight hours and allowing fuels to remain highly combustible throughout the day.

Emergency managers are urging residents to report any signs of smoke immediately, secure trailers and chains that could spark along roadways, and follow local burn restrictions as fire crews remain stretched across the state.

Lake Okeechobee Docks Shut Down as Drought Deepens

The impact of Florida’s drought is also being felt beyond wildfire zones, with navigation docks on Lake Okeechobee temporarily closing due to falling water levels, according to the South Florida Water Management District.

Officials announced that the north shore locks on Lake Okeechobee would close as water levels drop, making navigation unsafe for boats. The closures highlight the broad reach of the drought, which has strained water systems, harmed ecosystems and increased wildfire vulnerability across much of Florida.

Lake Okeechobee, a critical hub for flood control, water supply and navigation, typically sees seasonal fluctuations, but water managers say current levels reflect ongoing rainfall deficits and continued dry weather across the region.

Meteorologists warn that without sustained rainfall, fire danger is likely to persist in the days ahead. While isolated showers are possible later in the week, officials say it may take weeks of consistent rain to meaningfully reduce fire risk and improve soil moisture statewide.

Until then, Floridians are being urged to remain vigilant, as conditions remain primed for rapid-spreading wildfires, a threat officials say could escalate rapidly amid the current drought‑driven landscape.
