US House votes to extend temporary protections for Haitians in Trump rebuke


Ten Republicans join Democrats to extend Temporary Protected Status for nearly 350,000 Haitians in the United States.

The United States House of Representatives has voted to extend temporary immigration protections for some 350,000 Haitians living in the country, in a break with President Donald Trump.

Ten Republicans joined the Democratic majority in Thursday’s vote, which passed by a margin of 224 to 204.

The bill would allow Haitians already in the US to keep their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for three additional years, due to violence and instability in the Caribbean country.

The measure will now proceed to the US Senate, where it faces uncertain prospects. If it passed, Trump would almost certainly veto the bill.

“This is a monumental victory in a long-fought battle to protect the safety, dignity, and humanity of our Haitian neighbors,” Democratic Representative Ayanna Pressley, the co-chair of the House Haiti Caucus, said in a statement.

“Democrats and Republicans alike have come together to support our Haitian neighbors not just because this is good, commonsense policy, but because it is the right, humane thing to do.”

The bill advanced on Thursday through a bipartisan discharge petition, a legislative tool that allows lawmakers to bypass the House’s Republican leadership and force a vote.

Trump’s opposition

But the bill’s progress tees up a potential clash with the White House.

Trump and his officials have repeatedly attempted to roll back temporary immigration protections on the basis that previous administrations had exceeded their authority in granting extensions.

The push comes as part of Trump’s wider effort to restrict immigration into the US.

TPS is designed to shield foreign nationals who are already in the country from deportation. It is granted when their countries of origin are facing temporarily unsafe conditions, including natural disasters and conflicts. It also confers temporary work authorisation to successful applicants.

Last year, the Trump administration made several efforts to end TPS for Haitians, citing US “national interests”.

In June, for instance, it said the designation would expire in August. Then, in November, it renewed its intentions to end the programme, calling the move a “vote of confidence” in Haiti’s government.

The Caribbean nation has suffered from high levels of violence and political instability since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

The period following his death saw powerful gangs expand their influence on the island, seizing control of much of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

The State Department has previously warned US citizens not to travel to Haiti “due to the risk of crime, terrorism, kidnapping, unrest, and limited health care”.

Advocacy groups have warned that the fear of deportation has become a strain on Haitian migrants living in the US. They called on Congress to act to protect the vulnerable group.

“We are asking: Where will you be? On the right side of history? Or continuing to cause trauma to people who are asking for nothing other than safety and protection?” asked Guerline Jozef, the executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, during a news conference outside of the Capitol.

This month, the US Supreme Court is set to consider a fast-track case weighing the administration’s request to move forward with the revocation of deportation protections for Haitians and Syrians.

And don’t be fooled — though the women of Joshi entered the ring with sparkly and elaborate outfits, the wrestlers hit just as hard as anyone else.

J-Rod learned that the hard way as she challenged Yuki Arai for the Princess of Princess Championship.

J-Rod hoped to become the first American to win the title. Arai, known as “The Genius Girl,” initially felt the pain that J-Rod can bring to the ring.

J-Rod kept pushing Arai down to that, seemingly suggesting that because she was bigger and stronger, she was easily going to win the match. Arai used her quickness and agility to move around J-Rod. Arai had J-Rod in a sharpshooter, but “The Ultimate Athlete” would break out.

Arai even received a spear from J-Rod, and tried to pin her. But after a near fall, J-Rod’s frustration was building.

“What more do I have to do?” she yelled out to the crowd. “There’s no way you can remain champion.”

Arai went on the offensive from there. She avoided another spear from J-Rod and hit her with a full-nelson slam. She pinned J-Rod for the win to retain the Princess of Princess Championship.

J-Rod grabbed the mic from Arai and vowed she would be back.

“I underestimated you, Yuki. Tonight, you earned my respect, I love you too,” J-Rod said.

There were no championship changes on the card.

The Las Vegas crowd got to see familiar faces in The IInspiration in action. Cassie Lee and Billie McKay defended the Princess Tag Championship against former champions Shoko Nakajima and Hyper Misao.

Though The IInspiration was up to their usual antics, they used their teamwork to keep Misao at bay while they worked on Nakajima. Lee hit Nakajima with a codebreaker and pinned her for the win.

Miyu Yamashita was in action in a special three-way match against Mizuki and Miu Watanabe. While Yamashita showed off the brute strength that has made her one of the most dangerous Japanese pro wrestlers in the industry, Mizuki and Watanabe’s high-flying style came out early in the match.

Watanabe nailed Yamashita with a Meteora from the ramp early in the match. But Watanabe and Mizuki were no match for Yamashita in the end.

Yamashita would pin Watanabe to pick up the victory.

Other results included Suzume retaining the International Princess Championship over Sakura Hattoari, Yuki Kamifuku and Wakana Uehara, known as Ober Eats, defeated Toga and Uta Takimi and Raku, Pom Harajuku and Yuki Aing defeated Alexis Lee, Shino Suzuki and Himawari.

It’s the circle of life.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is getting ready to go wild with at least nine new attractions on the way – though that also means saying goodbye to some longtime spots that have been part of the park for years.

The transformation is already underway at the Orlando park, as Disney pushes forward with a major overhaul of DinoLand U.S.A. The project will introduce a brand-new “Tropical Americas” land, according to permits filed by Walt Disney Imagineering, as reported by Disney blog Inside the Magic.

The filings cover several areas of the redevelopment zone and suggest construction is ramping up as Disney moves toward a multi-year rollout expected to open in 2027, which it initially annouced in 2024.

The plan is to completely replace DinoLand U.S.A. with an immersive new environment inspired by the landscapes, culture and storytelling of Latin America. Leading the changes are a new “Encanto-” themed attraction and a reimagined version of the current Dinosaur ride, which will be rethemed into an Indiana Jones adventure, according to ITM.

The new Indiana Jones attraction is expected to follow a format similar to the Disneyland version, welcoming a fast-paced, chaotic adventure filled with practical effects. It will reuse the existing ride system while delivering a refreshed guest experience, the report says.

Beyond the headline attractions, the work also includes a number of supporting and guest-focused spaces designed to round out the new land. These include a backstage pump house at 580 DinoLand Drive that will support water features and special effects, along with two meet-and-greet locations at 590 and 594 DinoLand Drive that will either be refreshed or newly created to expand character experiences.

Dining and guest areas are also getting a major refresh. Restaurantosaurus at 601 Restaurantosaurus Road will be completely reimagined as a large hacienda-style quick-service restaurant that fits the new theme, while the nearby entrance at 672 DinoLand Drive is also being redesigned to create a more immersive entry into Tropical Americas.

A wood-carved carousel at 671 DinoLand Drive will round out the additions, featuring animals inspired by Disney characters and adding a more whimsical touch to the land.

The transformation represents one of the most significant updates to the park since it opened in 1998. Animal Kingdom is currently the lowest-performing park at Walt Disney World in terms of attendance. In 2024, it ranked eighth in the U.S. and was also behind both Universal Orlando parks, making it the only domestic Disney park not to place in the global top 10, according to the Themed Entertainment Association Global Experience Index, released in October.

Worldwide, the Animal Kingdom ranked 15th, drawing about 8.8 million visitors. While that marked a slight 0.3 percent increase year over year, attendance remains well below pre COVID-pandemic levels, with the park having reached 13.9 million visitors in 2019. It is also the only Walt Disney World park to fall short of the 10 million annual visitor mark, and it sees less than half the attendance of Magic Kingdom, which remains the most visited theme park in the world.

Several social media influencers have been sharing their disappointment over paying thousands of dollars for a stylist to create their Coachella outfits — only to end up with a box full of mismatched, ill-fitting clothing.

Montse Lewin, a 28-year-old content creator from Los Angeles, shared a recent video on TikTok about her experience hiring a stylist she found on social media to build her music festival look. Since its inception in 1999, Coachella has evolved into a haven for content creators, with its signature boho-chic aesthetic shaping festival fashion trends worldwide.

Ahead of attending the first weekend of Coachella, Lewis filled out a form about her clothing preferences and sent a Pinterest board to the stylist for inspiration.

When her outfits arrived in the mail, she wasn’t too thrilled. Her first look featured a range of clashing colors: a sequined dark purple skirt, a gold bikini-style bra, paired with a random leopard print scarf.

“I’m trying not to have a panic attack right now. I’m trying to breathe,” she said while reviewing the outfits.

She then wore a pair of loose grey pants and a brown belt, both of which were too big for her, with the bra. The next look included a white vintage t-shirt with ill-fitting silver basketball shorts. A fourth look consisted of a pink scarf, worn as a halter top, and a crochet skirt that was see-through.

“This was such a bad idea, oh my god,” Lewin added. “I was hoping for looks that felt original, fun, and creative… but instead I ended up with options that just don’t feel like me.”

In the comments of the video, which has more than 5 million views, viewers were shocked by the looks the stylists created, and quipped about how they weren’t the right fit for Coachella.

“Is this a prank?” one wrote, while another added: “PLS PLS PLS TELL ME THIS IS SATIRE.”

“Baby, that’s a donation bag, I think,” a third quipped about the clothes as a fourth said, “These outfits are so tragic omg.”

“I have never seen anything so bad,” someone else chimed in while another said, “Girl, this is hot garbage.”

While Lewin didn’t disclose how much she paid the stylist, influencer Mei Mei Monstaa said in a TikTok video that she had considered doing this too, but chose not to when the booking fee was $8,000. She claimed it would be $5,000 for each outfit from the stylist, who she didn’t mention by name, and that she couldn’t keep the clothes afterwards.

Another influencer named Dayna Marie shared her regret over hiring a stylist to dress her for the festival. In an Instagram video with more than four million views, Marie confessed that she gave the stylist full creative control when building the looks.

Marie was ultimately disappointed by what she was sent — the garments were clashing colors and looked more like pajamas than festival attire.

She was particularly stunned by an outfit that consisted of a yellow, cropped graphic t-shirt paired with a red and white polka dot mini skirt. “You cannot be for real,” she said. “Guys, I’m going to freaking cry. Are we serious?”

“And I already paid for all of this, I own this now.”

Viewers shared their confusion over why so many influencers were hiring online-based stylists. “Is this like a trend? Or did everyone hire bad stylists?” one wrote.

“I’ve decided that the ‘stylists’ styling people this year actually have no fashion sense,” another commented.

When you upload a photo to Facebook, you expect it to stay private unless you decide otherwise. That expectation just took a hit after a former employee of Meta was accused of accessing thousands of private images.

According to details confirmed by the company, the London-based employee allegedly created a program to bypass internal safeguards. Investigators say this may have allowed access to about 30,000 private Facebook images that were not meant to be viewed.

The individual is now under criminal investigation and is out on bail as authorities continue to review the case. Here’s how investigators say the access may have happened.

How the Meta employee allegedly accessed private images

Authorities believe the employee may have written a script to get around Meta’s internal detection systems. In simple terms, the system that should flag unusual behavior may not have caught the activity right away. This detail matters because large tech platforms rely on monitoring tools to detect suspicious access patterns. When those checks are bypassed, it raises questions about how internal access is controlled. 

The investigation is being handled by the cybercrime unit of the Metropolitan Police in London. At the same time, security experts often point out that insider threats are difficult to eliminate. Even strong systems can be tested when someone inside the company misuses access.

What Meta says about the employee investigation

Meta says it discovered the improper access more than a year ago and took action after identifying the issue. 

“Protecting user data is our top priority,” a Meta spokesperson told CyberGuy. “After discovering improper access by an employee over a year ago, we immediately terminated the individual, notified users, referred the matter to law enforcement and enhanced our security measures. We are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.”

Legal risks in the Meta private images case

Data protection experts say cases like this often come down to both intent and safeguards. If an employee accesses personal data without authorization, that can lead to criminal charges under data protection and computer misuse laws. However, the company’s responsibility depends on the protections it had in place. If proper safeguards existed, the focus usually remains on the individual. 

If not, regulators may consider penalties or legal claims against the company. The Information Commissioner’s Office, the U.K.’s data privacy watchdog, has acknowledged the incident. The agency stressed that social media users should be able to trust how their personal information is handled.

You can also enable alerts for unusual account activity. While this case involves an insider, account alerts still help you spot unauthorized access to your own profile. You can also turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) to add another layer of protection to your account.

What this means to you

If you use Facebook or similar platforms, this situation highlights something many people overlook. Even with strong safeguards, insider access still exists. Employees often need certain permissions to keep systems running. That creates a level of trust between users and the company. 

When that trust is broken, it can feel personal. At the same time, there are still steps you can take on your end. Reviewing your privacy settings, limiting what you share and enabling security features can reduce how much of your content is exposed. It also shows why detection and response matter. 

In this case, Meta says it identified the issue, removed the employee and notified users. Those steps can limit damage, but they do not erase the concern. The bigger takeaway is that privacy depends on both technology and human behavior. Systems can reduce risk, but they cannot remove it completely.

National Public Radio has received two charitable gifts totaling $113 million after President Trump moved to slash funding for NPR and PBS in 2025.

Philanthropist Connie Ballmer, the wife of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, made an $80 million donation, NPR announced on Thursday. The money — the largest ever from a living donor — will help enhance the radio network’s use of digital technology and increase engagement with audiences across platforms, according to NPR.

“I support NPR because an informed public is the bedrock of our society, and democracy requires strong, independent journalism,” Ballmer, a former member of the NPR Foundation board, said in a statement. “My hope is that this commitment provides the stability and the spark NPR needs to innovate boldly and strengthen its national network.”

NPR said the second gift, totaling $33 million, came from an anonymous donor. NPR CEO Katherine Maher said the charitable donations would put the network and its stations on solid financial ground in the decades to come. 

Congress last summer cut $1.1 billion in funding for public broadcasting, leaving some 246 NPR stations and hundreds of PBS outlets scrambling to fill the hole.

A federal judge ruled earlier this month that Mr. Trump’s executive order to slash funding for NPR and PBS violated the First Amendment by seeking to punish media outlets for speech he dislikes. But the decision did not restore funding to the stations. 

“[W]hile the court recently ruled in favor of NPR and PBS against the Trump Administration’s executive order — an essential victory for journalistic independence and the First Amendment — it did not reverse the devastating reality of the congressional defunding,” Maher said in a blog post.

“The permanent loss of more than $1 billion in federal funding has created significant financial pressure across all of public media,” she added.

Testimony at a major South African corruption inquiry was briefly overshadowed Tuesday by an unscripted moment — a suspended police chief with a tissue stuck to his brow.

Julius Mkhwanazi, the former deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, was testifying before the Madlanga Commission when the awkward moment unfolded.

Mkhwanazi, who was suspended in November 2025 amid misconduct allegations, had been wiping sweat from his face after answering questions from the commission.

Part of the tissue, however, remained stuck to his head.
