My late best friend’s anniversary hits me every year. Experts suggest ways to cope

Every February 11, the anniversary of the untimely death of my 19-year-old best friend hits me and I feel a heaviness that doesn’t lift until the day’s end.

The day when you lost a loved one, had an accident, or experienced another traumatic event can trigger grief, anger, sadness and anxiety – and also cause physical symptoms, like sickness and insomnia. In more severe cases, people suffering from PTSD may relive experiences in vivid flashbacks or dreams.

Experts call this “anniversary syndrome” or the “anniversary effect,” and every person’s experience is unique. Some 70 percent of U.S. adults say they’ve experienced at least one traumatic event, according to the National Council for Behavioral Health.

“During these times, these feelings and reactions can be strong and often ‘take you back,’” the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. The symptoms might begin in the weeks before and intensify as the date nears, the CDC adds. Some may continue for weeks after the anniversary.

But these symptoms don’t last forever and experts have identified several steps people can take to feel relief, both mentally and physically.

The rhythms of health

Getting the federallyrecommended seven hours of sleep a night is important but so is sticking to a schedule. If you don’t keep a sleep routine, it can throw off your circadian rhythm – the body’s way of regulating hormones, digestion and temperature, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Disrupting that internal clock can worsen the anniversary effect and also increase the likelihood of developing anxiety and depression.

So stick to a sleep schedule. That means going to bed and waking up at the same time, including on weekends, the Mayo Clinic instructs.

Going for a walk in sunlight, within the hour you wake up, helps signal to your brain and body that it’s daytime, says Banner Health nurse practitioner Alexandra Lessem, “setting the circadian clock.”

If you can’t be outside, sitting by an open window with direct sunlight has a similar effect.

A balanced diet packed with fruit and vegetables is crucial for a good night’s sleep. Several foods naturally contain melatonin, such as cherries, pistachios, almonds, eggs and fish, the National Institutes of Health says, and can help make you sleepy.

It’s important to drink plenty of water and move your body every day. As little as 10 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity, such as walking briskly or running, is enough to get more restorative sleep, Benjamin Baird, research assistant professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, said.

Mindful medicine

A few minutes of meditation a day helps with symptoms of anxiety, depression and trauma, and lets people connect with their inner self.

The ancient mind-body practice regulates the sympathetic nervous system, lowers the heart rate and levels of the stress hormone cortisol, the Cleveland Clinic says.

If you are new to meditation, begin with just a minute and build from there. There are a number of styles but some easy places to start include mindfulness meditation, which focuses on the breath, a certain image or feeling, or mantra meditation which has users repeat a certain word or phrase.

Guided meditation – following an expert in person or in one of many online apps – can help beginners tap into the process.

Journaling is a valuable practice for coping with the “anniversary effect.” It is widely used in therapy to help patients process painful feelings – and focus their minds on what they are grateful for or positive experiences.

“It may feel safest to bury painful feelings and avoid confronting them, but acknowledging what happened and how it has impacted you is an important part of healing,” the non-profit Mental Health America says.

Social service

As a difficult date on the calendar approaches, reach out to family and friends.

“There are some folks that, even months before, are nervous about the anniversary,” Laura Murray, a senior scientist in mental health and a clinical psychologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said in a statement. “They’re thinking about it, trying to figure out how to manage it – we sometimes describe this as spinning.”

Telling others not to bring up a death or traumatic event in the days before an anniversary can help friends or family struggling with trauma to avoid undue stress.

Make plans – even if it’s something small like going to a movie with a loved one or a board game night with friends. “It is important not to isolate yourself. Instead make efforts to be with others,” the National Center for PTSD says.

If you don’t want to confide in friends and family, talk to a trauma therapist. These experts are specifically trained in techniques such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. The therapy, first tested in 1989, involves moving your eyes a specific way while you process traumatic memories. It can improve mood without having to talk about negative events, the Cleveland Clinic says.

All in the technique

Mental health experts recommend some tools that can alleviate the anniversary effect.

If you are feeling stressed or stuck thinking about the event, focus on the five senses – sight, smell, touch, sound and taste – to bring you back to the present, the National Alliance on Mental Illness says. This might start with the feel of your clothing, the sound of bird chirping nearby or the smell of food wafting from a restaurant.

“Then notice four of each, then three of each, and so on,” the alliance advises.

Being told to stay positive may make you roll your eyes, but thinking positively can reduce stress, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Bring up some of those silly cat videos on your phone – the simple acts of smiling and laughing fight stress by lowering heart rate and blood pressure.

Or pay it forward: send someone a thoughtful card or buy a coffee for a stranger. Making others feel good can make you feel good about yourself.

Delta hikes bag check fee by up to $50 as jet fuel prices soar

Delta hikes bag check fee by up to as jet fuel prices soar

Delta Air Lines is hiking its bag-check fees, the latest U.S. carrier to increase the charge to fly hands-free as jet fuel costs rise due to the Iran war

Delta cited “evolving global conditions and industry dynamics” in announcing the change, which takes effect Wednesday. Fees for travelers’ first and second checked bags will rise by $10, while it will cost $50 to check a third piece of luggage on domestic and short-haul international flights, the airline said.

The new fee structure is part of “Delta’s ongoing review of pricing across its business,” the carrier said in a statement to CBS News. The increase represents the first time in two years that Delta has hiked fees for checking bags domestically, the airline noted.

Here are the new rates:

  • First bag: $45
  • Second bag: $55
  • Third bag: $200

Delta SkyMiles Medallion club members, first-class passengers and other eligible customers will still be able to check bags for free, the airline said. Checked-bag rates on long-haul international flights also remain unchanged.

Delta follows United and JetBlue in raising bag check fees since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.

Airlines have tried to offset higher fuel costs by raising airfares and, in some cases, adding fuel surcharges to ticket costs. Flight experts encourage travelers to purchase refundable fares for upcoming travel now, in case prices rise further.

The U.S. airline could face tens of billions of dollars in added fuel costs if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, according to Deutsche Bank analysts. If jet fuel prices remained just $2 per gallon higher for the entire year, airlines would have to boost their fares by roughly 17%, or $50, across the board to fully offset those costs, the investment bank estimates.

The price of jet fuel was $209 a barrel for the week ending April 3, up 132% from last year’s average, according to the International Air Transport Association.

The U.S. Embassy in Bahrain told American citizens in the country to shelter in place on Tuesday, as the embassy in Egypt issued its own caution to Americans amid threats that Iran and its terror proxies may try to target American universities across the Middle East.

The embassy in Manama directed all U.S. government employees, along with all other Americans in the country, to shelter in a secure structure and stay away from windows until further notice.

“Iran and its aligned terrorist militias may intend to target American universities in Bahrain,” the embassy said. “Iran has specifically threatened American universities across the Middle East.”

The embassy provided instructions to those Americans who wish to leave the Middle East.

Airlines cut flights and hike fares as fuel prices surge

“Given global jet fuel exports are currently at their lowest point in four years, the same level of air travel demand will likely not be sustainable if disruptions persist, meaning airlines will likely have to increase prices further, and reduce the number of flights,” he said.

Pressure on UK government to automatically release child trust funds at 21

Pressure on UK government to automatically release child trust funds at 21

Around half a billion pounds hidden in child trust funds could be unlocked immediately, experts have claimed, as the government is urged to do more to reunite young people with their money.

The funds are long-term, tax-free savings set up for every child born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011. The government deposited £250 in each, with those in low-income families or in local authority care receiving an additional £250.

Young people can take control of this account at 16 and withdraw funds when they turn 18. With interest, most grow to be worth much more than when they were set up.

Two-thirds of the six millions recipients of child trust funds are now over 18, meaning they should be able to access their accounts. However, an estimated 750,000 young adults are yet to claim their fund, HMRC data recently revealed, with £1.5bn still sitting in accounts.

The Share Foundation, a charity which helps link people with their child trust funds, has now called on the government to help reunite people with their funds through an ‘automatic release’ mechanism.

This would see the funds automatically given to account holders when they turn 21, a move which the Foundation says would give up to £286 million to young people immediately.

The proposal focuses on HMRC-allocated accounts, which account for 28 per cent of all funds that were opened (1.7m).

Overall, the scheme would release £553 million, the foundation finds, with £369 million of this going to low-income young adults.

Child trust funds have now been replaced with junior individual savings accounts (ISAs) which are long-term, tax-free savings accounts for children. These accounts work similarly, except the government does not give any money when they are set up.

Gavin Oldham, chief executive of the Share Foundation, said there is a lack of communication over the scheme and too little awareness, accusing the government of “policy procrastination”.

“It is strange to find a Government which, while it expresses such concern over the poverty of young people, at the same time is doing so little to deliver on the ground-breaking Child Trust Fund scheme introduced by the previous Labour Government,” he added.

The charity boss adds that the Share Foundation – which has reunited over 100,000 people with their child trust funds – is considering a judicial review to force the government to act on the issue of unclaimed funds.

An HMRC spokesperson said: “As well as directly sending every eligible young person information to help them find their Child Trust Fund, we also regularly raise awareness through social media and broadcast interviews – and have launched an online tool to help people trace their accounts.

“Banks, building societies and investment firms managing the funds are also responsible for communicating with account holders.”

Official guidance from the tax authority says that the most common reasons for lost child trust funds are that the claimants or their guardians have lost track of it or forgot it was set up.

It adds that every young person receives a National Insurance Notification before their 16th birthday, which includes information about how child trust funds can be located.

The department advises against using third-party agents who offer to find child trust funds at a price. In extreme cases, they have been known to charge £350 or even 25 per cent of the value of the account for this.

Instead, the tax authority advises young people either search ‘find your child trust fund’ on Gov.uk or use the free, approved tool from The Share Foundation, which requires just a few details. It is then easy to claim and access the account.

Personality test: Choose a tree and see what it reveals about your hidden talent – The Times of India

Personality test: Choose a tree and see what it reveals about your hidden talent – The Times of India

We’ve all been there—scrolling through the internet at a weird hour and stumbling onto a quiz that promises to reveal our “hidden soul” based on something as simple as a colour or a shape. While these aren’t exactly rigorous scientific exams, there is a reason we keep coming back to them. We have a deep-seated, natural curiosity about who we are when all the social filters are stripped away. This specific test doesn’t ask you to fill out a fifty-page questionnaire or analyse your childhood; it just asks you to trust your gut. It’s about that split-second “click” you feel when you see an image that resonates. Whether you realise it or not, your subconscious is constantly making choices based on your values, your temperament, and your internal strengths. In this test, by picking one of three distinct trees shown in the above image—the fiery Autumn Tree, the heavy Fruit-Bearing Tree, or the swaying Tropical Palm—you’re basically letting your intuition take the wheel for a moment to show you what kind of natural “talent” you’re already carrying. So, ready to take the test? Simply close your eyes and relax. Now, look at the above image and pick the tree you like the most. Read what it reveals about your talent:

The autumn tree

If you chose the Autumn Tree, then you’re deeply emotional. The reds, oranges, and golds of an autumn forest represent a specific kind of beauty that only comes through change and reflection. People who gravitate here are often the “human barometers” of their social circles. You’re the one who notices when a friend’s smile doesn’t quite reach their eyes, or when the energy in a room shifts during a tense meeting. You don’t just “hear” people; you listen to the subtext. This depth makes you a natural at anything involving connection or expression—think writing, counselling, teaching, or any form of creative work. You have this unique, almost poetic ability to take a messy, painful experience and turn it into something meaningful. Like the tree, you understand that there is a time to let go and a time to internalise. You turn life’s transitions into wisdom and comfort for others, too.

The fruit-bearing tree

Choosing the Fruit-Bearing Tree says you are a “nurturer” at your very core. You aren’t really interested in things that are just for show; you want to see results, growth, and tangible abundance. This tree is a living metaphor for someone willing to put in the quiet, unglamorous work today to enjoy the harvest tomorrow. You’re likely the “anchor” in your group—the person who keeps the wheels turning, remembers the important dates, and follows through on promises.Your talent lies in your consistency and patience. You invest in people and projects, and help them grow over long periods. You’re not looking for quick success; you’re interested in building a legacy. And so, you’re a natural leader or mentor. Whether you’re running a professional team or just holding a family together, you’re the one making sure the roots stay healthy, and the branches keep growing. You realise that true success isn’t an accident—it’s the result of showing up, day after day, with a watering can in hand.

The tropical palm

The Tropical Palm is all about a very specific kind of strength: resilience through flexibility. While massive oaks might snap in a hurricane because they refuse to move, the palm tree survives by bending with the wind. If this were your choice, you are likely the “calm in the storm.” When everyone else is panicking, overreacting, or getting caught up in the drama, you have this uncanny ability to stay upright and keep your cool.Your natural talent leans toward communication and connection. You don’t feel the need to dominate a conversation or be the loudest person in the room to be influential; your power comes from your presence. You help people feel heard and understood, often acting as the bridge between conflicting sides. This sense of poise makes you a natural fit for roles that involve travel, wellness, hospitality, or any kind of high-pressure collaboration. You’re living proof that you don’t have to be rigid or aggressive to be strong—you just have to know how to flow with the changes without losing your grip on who you are.How true is this test result for you? Tell us in the comments section below. And, in this case, the result isn’t accurate then worry not as such tests aren’t always scientifically true. They are for fun.
