IPL 2026: From having a 9-5 job to becoming a cricket hero – Varun Chakravarthy’s inspiring journey | – The Times of India

Varun Chakravarthy’s rise to becoming one of India’s most enigmatic spinners isn’t your typical “overnight success” story. If anything, it’s a masterclass in being incredibly stubborn. Most people would take three or four major rejections as a sign to pack it in, but Varun sat through forty of them. His journey is less about a straight line to fame and more about a guy who kept knocking on a door that was double-bolted, until he finally decided to just pick the lock.

The 40 “No’s” and a bag of gear

Back in his school days in Tamil Nadu, Varun was just another kid with a massive dream and a wicketkeeper’s glove. But the “system” wasn’t convinced. He went through trial after trial, only to be told—forty times—that he simply didn’t have what it took. Imagine that. Forty times someone looked him in the eye and said, “Not you.”Eventually, the weight of those rejections became too much. In what felt like a final act of surrender, he actually gave away all his cricket gear to his friends. It wasn’t just a cleanup; it was a funeral for his dream. He was done.

From blueprints to bowling creases

He did the “sensible” thing next. He headed to SRM University, got a degree in architecture, and spent three years working a 9-to-5. On paper, he’d made it—he had a stable career and a clear path. But life has a funny way of making you feel miserable in a “perfect” job if your heart isn’t in it. That quiet itch for the game never truly went away.Against every ounce of logic and financial safety, he quit. He didn’t just go back to cricket, though; he reinvented himself. He stopped trying to be a keeper-batsman and started experimenting with spin. It was a complete pivot, moving from designing buildings to designing the downfall of world-class batsmen.

The “Mystery” breakthrough

This second attempt wasn’t an instant hit either. He fumbled around with fast bowling and wicketkeeping again before finally discovering his true calling: mystery spin. This wasn’t just bowling; it was a puzzle. By the 2017–18 season, he was tearing up the local circuit. In one tournament for Jubilee Cricket Club, he took 31 wickets in just seven matches. That’s not just good; that’s “everyone-is-staring-at-him” good. He carried that momentum into the TNPL, helping Madurai clinch a title and proving he wasn’t just a fluke.

The IPL rollercoaster

The 2019 IPL auction changed his life overnight when Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) dropped a staggering ₹8.4 crore to sign him. Suddenly, the architect was a multi-millionaire. But the script took a dark turn: injuries and a lack of rhythm made his debut feel like a nightmare. The “bust” labels started flying. But if Varun knew anything, it was how to handle a setback. When he joined the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2020, he finally found his groove, bagging 17 wickets and even a cheeky five-wicket haul against Delhi. That performance finally punched his ticket to the Indian national team. Even though a few fitness hiccups delayed his debut, when he finally wore the blue jersey in 2021, it felt like a victory for every person who’s ever been told they’re “too late” or “not enough.” The rest, as they say, is history.

A life beyond the boundary

What’s cool about Varun is that he’s not just a cricket-bot. Before the fame hit, he actually had a cameo in the 2014 Tamil film Jeeva—a movie that, ironically, was about a cricketer struggling for a break. He’s also popped up on Cooku with Comali, showing a relaxed, human side that fans rarely see behind his intense game-face.At the end of the day, Varun Chakravarthy’s story says something pretty grounded: failure isn’t the end of the road; it’s just a detour. You can walk away, build a completely different life, and still find your way back to your passion if you’re willing to reinvent yourself. He didn’t just wait for an opportunity—he drew up the plans and built it himself.

CENTCOM commander directed strike against an IRGC headquarters in underground facility: sources

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

High-level sources have informed Fox News that during rescue efforts in Iran after a U.S. fighter jet was shot down, the commander of U.S. Central Command directed an attack against an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps headquarters in an underground facility.

While the airman rescue was going on, CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper directed a strike on an IRGC headquarters in an underground facility near Tehran — it was done with B2 bombers, using massive ordinance penetrators, the same weapon used last year in Operation Midnight Hammer, according to the sources. Fox News is told the headquarters was obliterated.

The US military B1 bombers (BONES) dropped 100 of their 2,000-pound bombs during the rescue operations to keep Iranians away from the rescue area during the operation, according to a senior U.S. defense official.

A senior military source told Fox News, “we delivered the heat” on the IRGC.

CENTCOM noted in a press release that U.S. forces had rescued two service members after their F-15E was downed.

Fox News was told that the operation took place between the two rescues: Cooper ordered the B2s to fly round trip from Whiteman AFB in the US because they received time-sensitive intelligence about the location of a large number of IRGC commanders inside this underground bunker in Tehran, and the Massive Ordinance Penetrator bunker buster bombs were dropped by the B2 warplanes.

Following the rescues, President Donald Trump declared in a Truth Social post, “We have rescued the seriously wounded, and really brave, F-15 Crew Member/Officer, from deep inside the mountains of Iran. The Iranian Military was looking hard, in big numbers, and getting close. He is a highly respected Colonel. This type of raid is seldom attempted because of the danger to ‘man and equipment.’ It just doesn’t happen!”

“The second raid came after the first one, where we rescued the pilot in broad daylight, also unusual, spending seven hours over Iran. An AMAZING show of bravery and talent by all!” he said.

Giants’ Dexter Lawrence requests trade as contract negotiations get stagnant: reports

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence reportedly requested a trade from the team and has made clear to the organization he will not be at the team’s offseason workouts.

Lawrence has been trying to “negotiate a contract reflecting his value to the Giants” the last two years but talks have remained stagnant, ESPN reported on Monday. Discussions about a new deal reportedly haven’t moved forward even with John Harbaugh coming in as head coach.

The burly 340-pound defensive lineman is a three-time Pro Bowler and has been with the Giants through some rough seasons. Despite that, he’s been one of their better defensive players since the team selected him in the first round of the 2019 draft out of Clemson.

Lawrence has 30.5 sacks, 15 pass break-ups and 341 tackles in 109 career games with New York.

Last season, Lawrence played in all 17 games for the first time in his career. He had an interception to go along with 31 tackles and a half-sack.

The 28-year-old player signed a four-year contract extension with the Giants in 2023, reportedly worth $87.5 million. He has two years left on his current deal. He would be paid $18.5 million in 2026 and $15.5 million if a new deal isn’t negotiated.

It’s unclear what team would be interested in trading for Lawrence. But with the NFL Draft around the corner, New York would likely expect at least two picks from any team trading for Lawrence.

Wawa recalls multiple drinks in five states over life-threatening health risk

Wawa recalls multiple drinks in five states over life-threatening health risk

Wawa has recalled four of its drinks over a potential health risk to customers with a milk allergy.

The beloved convenience store has recalled a select lot of 16-ounce pints of Wawa-branded Lemon Iced Tea, Diet Lemon Iced Tea, Diet Lemonade and Fruit Punch, according to a press release shared Friday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The beverages may contain an undeclared milk allergen, posing a serious or life-threatening risk for consumers who have a sensitivity or are allergic.

Wawa initiated the recall after it identified and corrected a temporary equipment issue that may have led to the presence of milk in these drinks, even though that ingredient isn’t listed on the label.

The drinks were sold at Wawa stores in five states: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia. Impacted beverages have been removed from shelves.

The select lot of Wawa drinks being recalled include Diet Lemon Iced Tea, Fruit Punch, Lemon Iced Tea and Diet Lemonade (Wawa)

The drinks can be identified in 16-ounce pint bottles, with the Wawa Iced Tea Lemon featuring the UPC code 726191018425 and code date of May 15, 2026, printed on top of the bottle. The Wawa Iced Tea Diet Lemon has the UPC 726191018548 and code date of May 18, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Wawa Diet Lemonade has the UPC 726191055901 and code date of May 18, 2026, and the Wawa Fruit Punch has the UPC 726191018432 and code date of May 19, 2026.

The Iced Tea Lemon was sold at 123 stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and the Iced Tea Diet Lemon was sold at eight stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Diet Lemonade was sold at 12 stores in Delaware and New Jersey, and the Fruit Punch was sold at 53 stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Although there haven’t been any illnesses reported to date, consumers with the drinks are urged to throw them away immediately or contact Wawa for a full refund.

Milk is identified as one of the nine major food allergies in the U.S., along with eggs, wheat, soybeans, tree nuts, fish, Crustacean shellfish, peanuts and sesame. Allergic reactions to these nine foods vary but can range from hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock.

The Wawa recall is just one of many issues to hit consumers. Last week, Publix recalled certain 12 packs of garlic knot rolls that don’t list egg in the allergen statement. The rolls posed a health risk to customers who have an egg allergy but don’t see the ingredient listed in the allergen statement. Recalled packs can be identified with the GTIN 29682800000.

Meanwhile, Schreiber Foods, Inc., based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, recalled 144 cups of its Honey Almond Cream Cheese Spread for Einstein Bros. Bagels last month. The six-ounce spreads were incorrectly labeled as “Plain,” meaning that anyone who has an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds runs the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product. Affected spreads — which can be identified by the Best If Used By date of July 21, 2026 — were distributed to Einstein Bros. Bagel locations in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Women’s Six Nations: Lleucu George hoping to add spark to Wales attack

Wales open their campaign against Scotland, who crushed their World Cup hopes last summer in a sobering opening match.

In fact, Wales have not tasted victory over their Celtic rivals in more than three years, but George says Saturday will be far from a grudge match.

“It doesn’t matter who we’re coming up against in the first week, it’s the first game, so we really want to try and put a stamp down,” she said.

“It’s a fresh start, we’ve got new coaches coming in and a different style of playing.

“It’s the same for them, they’ve got new coaches. We don’t really know what they’re going to bring, but we’re concentrating on ourselves as much as we can. Obviously we’ll look a little bit at them, but the onus is on us.”

Manchester City expect Bernardo Silva’s story coming ‘to an end’

Manchester City expect Bernardo Silva’s story coming ‘to an end’

Manchester City assistant Pep Lijnders has given the strongest hint yet that Bernardo Silva is set to leave the club at the end of the season by saying “every good story comes to an end.”

Silva’s contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in June.

The Portugal veteran has repeatedly said: “I know what I’m going to do” when asked about his future, but is yet to officially clarify his plans.

Lijnders, however, appeared to confirm Silva’s exit this summer when he took on Pep Guardiola’s postmatch media duties following City’s 4-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday.

“Every good story comes to an end,” Lijnders said. “I hope he enjoys the last months — there are only six weeks — and has a good farewell. He deserves all that attention as well.”

Silva, 31, has been linked with moves to the Saudi Pro League, Barcelona and boyhood club Benfica.

City have also been linked with midfielders ahead of the summer transfer window, including Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, but Lijnders insists it will be almost impossible to replace Silva.

“You never replace a player with the same kind of player because they don’t exist,” he said. “Bernardo Silva is unique. The way he controls games, the way he moves, the way he receives, the way he leads, the way he sees the solutions. All these things.

“You never search for a replacement of one type of player. You search for what is needed to grow with the team and somebody who can fit in the first XI.

“And then you hope, with our academy, with the young players we already bought that they can make that step as well in the midfield positions.”

City’s win on Saturday put them into the semifinals of the FA Cup, having already lifted the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

The Islamic Republic of Iran took the lives of two men convicted of trying to storm a military facility and access an armory in January, the Mizan news outlet of Iran’s judiciary indicated on Sunday, according to Reuters.

An organization called Iran Human Rights said that the Iranian news agency reported that the two individuals, Mohammad Amin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast Kolor, were hanged on April 5.

Biglari, a 19-year-old computer science student, Kolor, 30, were arrested with several other individuals on January 8 amid a crackdown against protesters in the nation’s capital city of Tehran, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

They faced charges that included “‘enmity against God (moharebeh), corruption on earth, arson of public facilities, and assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security,'” the group indicated.

Another individual arrested January 8, 18-year-old Amirhossein Hatami, was hanged on April 2, Iran Human Rights noted, citing the Mizan News Agency.

Ali Fahim, a 23-year-old who was among those arrested on January 8, was executed on April 6, the Hengaw Organization noted on Monday, explaining that the Mizan news agency confirmed the killing.

“These executions are part of the Islamic Republic’s strategy of survival, waging war against its own people under the shadow of external conflict,” Iran Human Rights Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam noted. “The international community must respond with urgency. The situation of prisoners and the regime’s systematic use of the death penalty as a political tool of repression must be made a central condition in any negotiations or engagement with the Islamic Republic.”

The executions occurred as the U.S. and Israel continue to wage war against Iran.

Samsung discontinuing its texting app, tells users to switch to Google Messages

Samsung discontinuing its texting app, tells users to switch to Google Messages

NEW YORK — Samsung is saying goodbye its namesake texting app.

According to an end of service announcement published on the tech giant’s U.S. support website, Samsung Messages will be discontinued in July. Impacted owners of Samsung smartphones and other gadgets are being asked to switch to Google Messages in the meantime, “to maintain a consistent messaging experience on Android.”

All Samsung Galaxy phones run on Google’s Android operating system. To switch to Google Messages, Samsung’s website gives users instructions to download the app from the Play Store, if not already on their phone, and set it as the default. Some people may also receive an in-app notification to guide them through the process.

Samsung says switching to Google Messages will give users access to updates like the latest artificial intelligence features from Google’s Gemini — which includes an experimental feature called “Remix” to generate images during conversations and AI-powered reply suggestions — and the ability to share higher quality photos between Android and Apple iOS devices through RCS-enabled messages.

Users of older Android operating systems (dating back to Android 11 or older) will not be impacted by the end of Samsung Messages, the company noted. To check what Android OS you have on a Samsung device, open the settings app, click on “software information” and scroll to “Android version.”

Meanwhile, owners of Samsung’s latest Galaxy 26 lineup and other newer phones cannot download the Samsung Messages app from the Galaxy Store today.

All devices will no longer be able to download Samsung Messages after it’s officially discontinued in July, the company noted. Samsung said users can check their app for the exact date for when service will go offline.

Beyond the U.S., Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for further information about whether its guidance for Samsung Messages was the same globally.
