Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been linked to two luxury apartments overlooking the Israeli Embassy in London, a location that security experts said could provide “permanent surveillance,” according to multiple reports.

The multimillion-dollar Kensington properties sit next to the high-profile embassy compound and were identified by UK media, drawing on findings from a yearlong probe into Khamenei’s potential overseas assets.

The Times of London reported on March 5 that the one building “sits next to the Israeli Embassy on Palace Green,” placing the residences in exceptional proximity to one of Israel’s most sensitive diplomatic sites.

The revelations stem from a Bloomberg investigation that alleged that the Khamenei portfolio could span multiple countries and include high-value real estate in London, totaling around $138M as well as assets in Europe and the Gulf.

The two London apartments were reportedly acquired in 2014 and 2016 via intermediaries and occupy upper floors of the building, offering a direct vantage point toward the rear of the Israeli embassy compound, UK media reported.

A terrorism specialist quoted in reports said the positioning effectively means “Iran owns the view into the back of the Israeli Embassy from less than 50 meters away,” describing the situation as a potential “serious security breach.”

Roger Macmillan, a former director of security at the Iranian dissident satellite channel Iran International, also said the two apartments had “a direct line of sight, held through Mojtaba Khamenei. That’s not a property portfolio — it’s a permanent surveillance platform.”

“This is a serious security breach,” he added.

Further details from Bloomberg’s investigation indicated that a businessman acted as a financial conduit, buying up high-end properties on Khamenei’s behalf and channeling funds through a network of investments.

The investigation also found that 11 mansions on London’s “Billionaire’s Row” were purchased using an Isle of Man shell company.

The Financial Times has also similarly reported on links between Khamenei’s associates and luxury assets across Europe.

Khamenei, 56, has been viewed as a powerful figure within Iran’s ruling establishment, ultimately becoming the leading successor to his father, who was killed in a Tehran compound strike on Feb. 28.

Surging U.S. gas prices could erase bigger tax refunds, analysis finds

Higher U.S. gasoline prices stemming from the Iran war could effectively wipe out the fatter tax refunds many Americans are expected to collect this year, a new analysis found.

Economists from the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research estimate that the average U.S. household will spend an additional $740 on gas this year because of the jump in global oil prices following the attack on Iran. If that estimate holds true, it would gobble up nearly all of the additional money people are slated to collect in tax refunds this year, according to the research.

The nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimates that the average individual tax refund will be $748 higher this year because of new cuts provided under the Republican-backed “One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act,” signed into law last year by President Trump.

As of earlier this month, overall tax refunds were averaging $3,676, up 11% from the same point last year, according to the IRS.

To be sure, the eventual pocketbook hit from higher U.S. energy prices depends on how long the conflict in Iran persists and, more specifically, how long the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains effectively blocked to the tankers ferrying oil and liquid natural gas to global markets.

Modest consumption boost

A separate analysis from Pantheon Macroeconomics found that bigger tax refunds are unlikely to fully offset the impact of higher gas prices on people’s finances. Steeper fuel costs are set to reduce households’ real incomes by $15 billion per month, the investment advisory firm estimated.

By comparison, between February and April, larger refunds this tax season are expected to boost household budgets by a combined $10 billion, Pantheon estimated.

“The round of individual tax refunds currently underway will offer only modest and short-lived support to consumption, offsetting just part of the blow from rising gas prices,” analysts with the firm said.

“Rockets and feathers”

The Stanford researchers’ calculation of the additional household gas expenditures assumes that the strait will remain closed for three weeks. If tensions ease and tankers start traversing the waterway sooner, estimates of how much consumers could spend on gas would change, Neale Mahoney, director of the Stanford Institute, told CBS News.

The Stanford estimate also reflects the “rockets and feathers” principle, Mahoney added — the concept that product prices are quick to shoot up when input costs climb, but tend to drift down slowly when those same costs decline.

For now, the impact on energy costs is evident. Oil prices spiked on Wednesday amid escalating attacks in the Gulf, with Brent crude rising to nearly $111 a barrel and the U.S. benchmark jumping to roughly $99.

The national average gas price soared to $3.88 per gallon on Thursday, up 96 cents from one month ago, according to AAA data.

The Trump administration has touted tax cuts under the “big, beautiful bill.” The new law eliminated taxes on some overtime and tipped income, and raised the limit on the deduction for state and local taxes, or SALT, from $10,000 to $40,000.

The extra money will come in handy. A recent survey from Bank of America Global Research found that 36% of respondents said they plan to use their tax refund to pay off debt. Roughly 10% said they would make a major purchase or cover everyday expenses, while about 13% expect to put the money toward savings.

Mortgage rates in the U.S. jumped this week to the highest level in three months, as the Iran war fans inflation fears and puts pressure on the U.S. housing market.

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 6.22% in the week ending March 19, up from 6.11% the previous week, according to Freddie Mac.

Economists note that current borrowing costs remain well below the 6.67% rate on a conventional 30-year loan a year ago. Still, the latest uptick is a discouraging sign for house hunters as the spring buying season kicks off. In late February, mortgage rates fell below 6% for the first time since September 2022.

“Elevated uncertainty could once again sideline both buyers and sellers, echoing the hesitant market conditions seen last year,” Anthony Smith, senior economist at Realtor.com, told the Associated Press.

Mortgage applications fell nearly 11% last week from the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. New Census Bureau data also show that sales of new single-family homes dropped nearly 18% in January from the previous month and are down 11.3% from January 2025.

Iran war impact

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate has climbed since the conflict in the Middle East began in late February. The war has tightened global energy supplies, raising oil prices and injecting uncertainty into financial markets.

The 10-year Treasury yield, which influences the direction of mortgage rates, was at 4.26% on Thursday afternoon, up from 3.96% before the war started. As long-term bond yields rise, that pushes up mortgage rates.

“Rising energy prices and renewed trade uncertainty have lifted inflation expectations, putting upward pressure on longer-term interest rates and, in turn, mortgage rates,” Realtor.com senior economist Anthony Smith said in a blog post.

Mortgage rates are also indirectly influenced by the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions, which impact the broader lending environment. The central bank doesn’t set mortgage rates, but its decisions to raise or lower its short-term rate are watched closely by bond investors and can affect the yield on 10-year Treasury.

The Fed decided this week to hold rates steady as it assesses the impact of the Iran war, while also signaling that it could move to lower rates at least once this year.

However, some Wall Street analysts have cast doubt on that. EY-Parthenon chief economist Gregory Daco said in a report that it’s “entirely plausible that the Fed won’t deliver any rate cuts this year.”

MEDINA, Ohio — Meteorite hunters fanned out across a wide swath of Ohio on Thursday, hoping to collect fragments of an estimated 7-ton (6,350 kilograms) space rock that crashed into Earth this week after a dazzling fireball that was seen from hundreds of miles away.

The meteoroid broke apart around 9 a.m. Tuesday over Valley City, a half-hour south of Cleveland, after it sped through the atmosphere at about 45,000 miles (72,420 kilometers) per hour. It caused a sonic boom that rattled buildings and caused fears of an explosion. The fireball was seen from Wisconsin to Maryland, and NASA confirmed it was a meteoroid nearly 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter.

Medina resident December Harris didn’t have to go looking — her cousin and roommate, Ambra Sinclair, found a small black rock they suspect is a meteorite when she was leaving for work. They had heard the sonic boom Tuesday morning but figured it might have been noise from a nearby airport.

Harris said her roommate found the rock in a 4-foot (1.2-meter) area between the garage and the house late Wednesday morning. She described it as somewhat triangular shaped, less than 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter — and “very, very black,” with pits on the surface, grooves and a melted texture on its exterior.

Meteoroids are traveling at very high speeds when they suddenly hit gases that blanket Earth, causing tremendous stress as they compress the air in front of them. That heats the rock, which melts and breaks apart.

The sight of the black rock stuck out at Harris’ house.

“I’ve got a cleaned-off driveway,” said Harris, 70, a retired business owner. “There’s nothing like this around.”

She had heard she should avoid touching a meteorite with bare hands, so they picked it up with a napkin and placed it inside a jar. Now she’s looking for a way to authenticate it — no one answered the NASA phone number she called seven times.

“To us, me and my cousin, we have a strong faith in God,” Harris said. “We’re like, ‘God just dropped it out of heaven.’”

After he learned of the meteor sightings, meteorite collector and dealer Roberto Vargas hit the road to drive for hours from his home in Bristol, Connecticut, to Ohio.

He drove into the night and started his search shortly after sunrise Wednesday. It was nearly sundown though before he got lucky and came across a suspected meteorite. At noon on Thursday he located a second piece, which he said is “100% fusion crusted,” a museum-quality specimen he plans to keep.

It was enough to make the 40-year-old former mental health therapist wax poetic.

“It was a massive event — the shock waves, the sonic booms,” he said, taking a break from his search to do a phone interview. “This is a beauty of a fall.”

In nearly a decade of collecting, Vargas had found only about 20 meteorites in the wild. He’s among the hunters speculating that there might be a much larger piece out there — perhaps 20 pounds (9 kilograms) or more.

Vargas said there’s a mix of variables that will factor into how long he stays in the area.

“It depends on how many stones are found,” he said. “Do they continue to be found? And what the situation is like with huntable ground. There’s a lot of private property around here.”

Gabe Leidy thought maybe something had hit his house in North Ridgeville when he heard the boom, then went searching for pieces after work Wednesday afternoon.

The 39-year-old who works in supply chain management went to the Sharon Center area, where he thought a black space rock might stand out. That’s when he found “something that looks very, very, very much like a meteorite.”

Some people have already offered him hundreds or even thousands of dollars for it, but Leidy wants to hang on to it. For now it’s in a cupboard, but he imagines that one day it might end up in a museum.

“My goal here was just to find a memento that I can remember this probably once-in-a-lifetime event by,” he said.

ABC has scrubbed the upcoming season of “The Bachelorette,” starring Taylor Frankie Paul, citing a newly released video from 2023.

Thursday’s unprecedented cancellation of the already filmed season of the long-running reality television show comes days before it was to premiere, on Sunday.

“In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of ‘The Bachelorette’ at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family,” a Disney Entertainment Television spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.

The statement appeared to reference a 2023 video of an altercation between Paul and her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen, that was published by TMZ on Thursday. Paul was arrested in 2023 and charged with aggravated assault and other offenses, including domestic violence in the presence of a child. She pleaded guilty that August to a misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault; the other charges were dismissed.

A police spokesperson in Draper City, Utah, told People magazine that there was an open domestic violence investigation of Paul and Mortensen, and that allegations have been made in both directions. Mortensen is the father of one of Paul’s three children.

Representatives for Paul and Mortensen didn’t immediately return requests for comment. ABC’s statement didn’t include details on what the network planned to do with the show’s time slot.

Her selection did offer synergy, though, as she also stars on “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” a Hulu reality show. Both Hulu and ABC are owned by Disney. In a statement confirming her casting in October, ABC credited Paul with “igniting ‘MomTok’ and going viral for pulling back the curtain on Salt Lake’s soft-swinging scene.”

A Florida State football player was arrested Wednesday after allegedly getting physical with law enforcement in Fort Lauderdale.

Conor McAneney, a kicker, was charged with two third-degree felony counts, including battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence, and a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

The battery on a law enforcement officer charge included a $2,000 bond, while the other felony had a bond of $500, according to online records. The trespassing charge had a $250 bond.

The university is on spring break, and spring practices were paused and will resume next Thursday.

The 2025 season was McAneney’s first as a Seminole after transferring from Quincy University, a Division II school in Illinois. Last season, he went 7-for-10 on field goals, with his longest make 45 yards.
