You may now kiss your wedding plans goodbye.
A Kansas City bride was summoned to jury duty on August 31 in Wyandotte County — the problem was, she was also set to get married in Italy that day.
“Our first date was on a Monday, and then we actually got engaged on a Monday,” Katrina Badowski told KSHB 41. “I think sometimes the universe has a sense of humor,” she added.
But Badowski wasn’t laughing when she saw the date on her jury summons.
“My jaw physically dropped like a cartoon. I was so shocked to see that date,” she said.
Badowski’s predicament quickly went viral on social media, in a video that now has over 1 million views on both Instagram and TikTok.
“The odds of you getting summoned for jury duty on your wedding day are low, but never zero,” she wrote in a viral video showing her summons.
Hundreds of people commented with their own stories about similarly inconvenient jury summonses.
“Called for jury duty on my induction date at 41 weeks pregnant and they said it wasn’t a valid excuse,” one person claimed.
“I got summoned on the day I was supposed to take my state boards, I had already paid hundreds to take it and I couldn’t reschedule so I called and asked for a postponement…they postponed it and summoned me for my wedding day,” another said.
Others offered up all kinds of excuses or methods to get out of showing up.
“Delete this and act like you never got it in the mail lmaaooo,” one commenter wrote in a response that has over 26,300 likes.
“Just write ‘return to sender, no longer lives here’ on it and pop it back in your mailbox. Problem solved,” another said.
One person provided the most ethical way to get out of jury duty: “If you provide evidence of nonrefundable preplanned travel/etc they will grant you an exemption and you go back on the waitlist, at least in my state.”
Luckily for Badowski, she received the ultimate wedding gift: a pass from jury duty so she could attend her Italian nuptials.
“Crisis averted,” Badowski told KSHB 41.
Despite the timing, Badowski vowed that she would actually like the opportunity to serve on a jury — just not during her wedding.
“I’m hoping my jury duty dreams come true sometime in the future,” she said.
Badowski previously appeared on Peter Weber’s season of The Bachelor in 2020, where she was sent home night one. She was also spotted on a Valentine’s Day date with fellow “Bachelor” alum Chris Bukowski that February, People reported.
