Tom Brady’s rivalry with Logan Paul took a new twist on Saturday as the two came face-to-face on stage at Fanatics Fest in New York City.

The two competitors met on stage with New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns coming in between them. The NFL legend then attempted to slap the WWE star before they were pulled apart before things could really escalate.

Paul and Brady responded to the incident on X afterward.

“This happened bc I was roasting Tom for beating him in flag football. And he tries to smack me ?? Horrible example for the kids,” Paul wrote on X. “Aura -100 + Blocked. With a torn tricep.”

Brady called him a “dork.”

“I tried America… will try again next time I see this nerd,” he added.

Brady and Paul have been feuding since the seven-time Super Bowl champion said the YouTuber wasn’t a real athlete because he competed in WWE and not on the gridiron like him.

The former New England Patriots star made the initial remarks during Super Bowl week. The two had it out during the Fanatics Flag Football Classic.

Brady suggested in an interview on WWE star Cody Rhodes’ podcast “What Do You Wanna Talk About?” that he would want to get involved in a match.

“I need to get an invite. I’ve been waiting for (WWE president) Nick Khan to come up with some storyline for me to get in the mix,” Brady said Thursday. “I feel like I’m retired from football, and I have an opportunity to go out there and still showcase that I’m a little bit of an athlete.”

Brady told Fox News Digital in April 2025 that he might show up at WrestleMania 41.

Dangerous wildfire smoke is impacting more than a dozen states on Saturday morning as air quality alerts span from the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes to New England, south through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

More than 900 wildfires are burning across Canada, sending smoke into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, though a storm system moving through Saturday could help clear some of the haze.

The Midwest and Upper Great Lakes are expected to see poor air quality through the weekend as northwesterly winds push a plume of smoke into the region.

Meanwhile, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 3 of 5 risk for severe storms across parts of the Ohio Valley, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., could be affected. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo are also expected to see strong storms.

The rounds of showers and storms will bring the threat of damaging winds, hail, a few tornadoes and chances for flash flooding in certain areas.

Flood watches are in effect for parts of the Northeast, including New York City and Philadelphia, through Saturday evening as heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding.

Elsewhere, monsoonal moisture is expected to extend from West Texas and southern New Mexico into central and northern Arizona and southern Utah, where daytime heating could trigger thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

A severe storm threat also extends into parts of Virginia and the Carolinas, where scattered storms could produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall as Charlotte, Raleigh and Virginia Beach are among the cities that could be affected.

When Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer threw open the doors of their first shop in 1894, the pair’s Penny Bazaars famously bore the slogan “Admission Free”, encouraging customers to browse without any obligation to purchase anything.

It might feel counterintuitive, but more than a century later, the message has stuck, as I found walking around all 100,000 sq ft of the super stylish renovation of the Marks and Spencer Pantheon Oxford Street store. There is a crackle in the air following this major upgrade. The womenswear displays are more akin to the sort you might find in Harvey Nichols, and the produce presentation is what you’d expect to see in an upmarket food hall in Whole Foods or Selfridges.

I didn’t even mean to buy anything. But of course, like the 56 per cent of M&S customers who walk in with no intention of making a purchase, I couldn’t help but pick up a few bits (underwear, a raid on the deli counter and, of course, a Gin in a Tin).

But this isn’t M&S as we have traditionally known it to be. Here, I’m among a melting pot of generations: Gen-Zers perusing rails of slip dresses that look like they could be from Miista, millennials sizing up smocks that resemble those at DÔEN. A fashion editor I know is considering a broderie shirt similar to those at BODE, while a chic fiftysomething of my acquaintance is picking up a pair of high-vamp ballet flats that look like just the ones I’ve been eyeing up at Soeur, where they retail for £325. The M&S version cost £58.

Downstairs, the atmosphere shifts to that of a Provençal marketplace: a vast food hall decked out with wooden barrels heaving with fresh piles of shiny fruit and veg. There’s a rosé wall, aisles devoted to delectable picky bits, and a tall honey tower. On top of this, the Pantheon features two new upper floors, showcasing menswear, beauty, lingerie, childrenswear, and homewares. You could easily lose a few hours in the place – and I do.

Celebrating 100 years in the fashion industry, M&S could have spent this year bathed in nostalgia, hoping that would be enough to remind its customers why they loved it so much. But instead of looking back, it has changed tack, and the boldness of its ambition to appeal to new customers while not scaring off its stalwarts is paying off.

While this has meant working on its online shopping offer, M&S isn’t abandoning the high street, and it is clearly rewarding the shoppers who still make the effort. This new go-to destination, a bricks-and-mortar shopping experience, makes that effort worth their while.

Four shiny new lifestyle stores and a series of catwalk shows are appealing to the style set, too – a group that might previously have dismissed M&S as the go-to for sensible underwear and affordable cashmere. Now, it has become the place to get a high fashion fix at high-street prices.

Like Zara, M&S is now doing weekly drops of clothes that talk to the trends, and this affordable luxe has extended to its food and homeware. It recently recruited the UK’s first “Tommelier”, Lydia Aaron, to offer her advice to shoppers on which tomatoes to pick for which meals, and there are frequent nods to viral food fads, like the Big Daddy Pistachio Bar, a twist on the Dubai chocolate trend. Last year’s strawberries-and-cream sandwich sold more than 1 million units in just five weeks. Today, 50 per cent of UK households shop with M&S Food.

In the homeware section, you’ll find Tom Kerridge – a stainless steel frying pan for £30 is this summer’s most coveted item – and Kelly Hoppen’s collection, which includes £59 table lamps that wouldn’t look out of place in Soho House, and £25 candles that resemble the likes of Diptyque. In fact, interior designer Hoppen helped to curate the layout of her namesake items on the shop floor of the new Pantheon, and they are displayed more like museum artefacts than supermarket household items.

Leading the way in all this is savvy Stuart Machin, who joined M&S as managing director of the food division in 2018 and became CEO of the company in 2022, set on transforming it into a sartorial and lifestyle juggernaut. Suffice to say, he has succeeded tenfold; M&S now sits happily at the vanguard of contemporary trends across the board, having topped YouGov’s Best Brand Rankings in the UK for the last four years. The company has been rewarded in profits, too, with 2025 food sales reaching £9bn – almost doubling since 2009. Last year, M&S made £1.8m from sales of its £10 bras alone.

This scale of elevation is also felt within the company’s fashion offering, which feels more tapped into the zeitgeist than ever before. The woman behind the transformation is Maddy Evans, who has been head of womenswear since 2019, joining from Topshop, which makes a lot of sense when you look at the company’s trajectory both aesthetically and also strategically – Topshop gained cult status as the affordable, stylish brand for the masses who also happened to be in the know.

There have been viral items here, too, like those now-sold-out £30 hiking cord sandals that looked just like Miu Miu’s, which cost £690, and a £280 leather funnel-neck jacket that could easily be from Acne, which sells similar styles for upwards of £2,000. Then there’s the suede loafer in chocolate brown, which recently sold more than 36,000 units in a single week. Last year, collections with 16Arlington and Bella Freud made two of the UK’s most coveted designer brands accessible to the masses, while a vintage-inspired capsule collection in partnership with Sienna Miller gave M&S that highly coveted It-girl stamp of approval.

Earlier this summer, there was a catwalk show in Ibiza hosted by Gen Z influencer Chicken Shop Date’s Amelia Dimoldenberg (a livestream of the show was watched by 26 million people), and the brand will be hosting its first catwalk show at London Fashion Week in September.

A lot of what M&S is doing right now defies the assumed laws of retail science. Take its £350 tailored suit offering, which invites men to a dedicated section in the Pantheon store for a bespoke fitting, where everything from the buttons to the fabric can be customised. The order-to-arrival process takes three weeks. Meanwhile, M&S is starting to become known for its quick turnaround on trends, such as its Nineties edit, packed with timeless Carolyn Bessette Kennedy-inspired pieces off the back of the incredible success of Disney+’s Love Story. Think crisp white shirting and simple slip dresses.

So, the question must be: will M&S be able to sustain the quality at such good prices in the long term?

The clothes are produced around the world, with M&S’s interactive supplier map featuring facilities at 770 sites, including locations in Iceland, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In May, the company announced its acquisition of a 437,000 sq ft fashion distribution centre in Lichfield. Formerly owned by ASOS, the new site is set to help bolster the company’s womenswear and menswear capacity, while boosting efficiency, still reducing costs, and improving margins, all while bringing the brand closer to its goal of doubling its online fashion business. The site is set to become fully operational in 2027, and will employ 600 people.

The company’s latest ESG report states that it designs products to last longer, uses 100 per cent more responsibly sourced cotton, and outlines its clothing recycling and resale programmes as part of its “Another Life” initiative. Such measures represent significant sustainability efforts, although the extent to which they offset the environmental impact of a large-scale, trend-led retail business remains open to debate.

Similarly speedy is the culinary innovation. An idea can go from around the table to supermarket shelves within months because, unlike other supermarkets, M&S works with dedicated “Fortress Factories” that don’t produce items for any other retailers.

There are more than 10 around the UK, all operated by longstanding suppliers that can turn food products around at a quick pace. One of the most prominent fortress factories sits within Park Cakes in Oldham, which is a particularly special site given that its relationship with M&S dates back more than 80 years. It’s also where Colin the Caterpillar is made – when a gluten-free variation was created there and released earlier this year, more than 10,000 units were sold within the first five days.

One of the key initiatives under Machin’s leadership that has been integral to M&S’s more recent success is the “Straight to Stuart” scheme, which encourages all staff to submit their ideas for new products. That’s how the brand started selling stoma-friendly underwear in 2024. As one of the 200,000 people in the UK living with a stoma, Hannah Gadsby struggled to find underwear that fitted her properly. Having worked at the company for 17 years, she pitched the idea to Stuart, and 18 months later, M&S became the first high-street retailer to offer stoma knickers both online and in 15 stores.

Then there’s the sense that the work is never quite done. The Pantheon store operates around a “test and learn” model, whereby customer habits are tracked through the regular deployment of mystery shoppers as well as staff and shopper feedback.

Putting the customer at the heart of your business is a tenet long abandoned in a cut-throat retail high street, where every scrap of profit is being fought over in a cost of living crisis. But equally, it could be argued that these strategies have contributed to the high street’s demise. Abandon your customer, and your customer will abandon you. Marks & Spencer has learnt that lesson in spades. As the CEO says, it is a store with “25 years of catching up to do”.

Still, the Pantheon is undeniably a big step forward, forming part of a million small steps that have clearly made a real difference to the way we shop.

Start with the screen you already have

Before you mess with settings, look around the room. The best option may already be sitting in front of you. A smart TV works well for most people because it may support AirPlay, Chromecast, Smart View, Roku, Fire TV or screen mirroring. A laptop can also work if the TV connection gets messy. A tablet is great for a smaller group at the kitchen table. A projector gives you the biggest wow factor, especially outside.

How to share iPhone photos on a TV with AirPlay

AirPlay is usually the cleanest option for iPhone owners. It works with Apple TV, many smart TVs, some Roku devices, and select Fire TV smart TVs that support AirPlay.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the photo or video you want to show.
  • Tap the Share button.
  • Swipe up if needed.
  • Tap AirPlay.
  • Then choose your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV.
  • If a passcode appears on the TV, enter it on your iPhone.

This is great when you are at home, and your TV already supports AirPlay. It can also work at someone else’s house, but both devices usually need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. How to mirror your iPhone screen

Sometimes the AirPlay button does not appear where you expect it. In that case, mirror your whole iPhone screen.

  • Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
  • Tap the Screen Mirroring button , which looks like two overlapping rectangles.
  • Select the Apple TV or a compatible smart TV.
  • Then open Photos and start swiping.
  • The catch is that everyone can see what is on your screen.

Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus first so private texts and alerts do not show up during the slideshow.

How to share Android photos on a TV with Chromecast

For Android owners, Google Photos and Chromecast are a strong combo. This works with Chromecast devices, Google TV Streamer and many TVs with Google Cast built in.

Settings may vary depending on your Android’s manufacturer

  • Open Google Photos.
  • Select the photo or album you want to show.
  • Tap More , then tap Cast.
  • Choose your Chromecast or compatible TV.
  • Once it connects, open a photo or video and swipe through your vacation shots.

This method also works from Google Photos on iPhone or iPad if you are signed into your Google Account.

How to share Samsung Galaxy photos with Smart View

Samsung Galaxy phones have a built-in screen mirroring feature called Smart View. It is one of the easiest ways to show photos on a Samsung TV and some other compatible displays.

Settings may vary depending on your Android’s manufacturer

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
  • Tap Smart View . The icon usually looks like a play button or phone-style shape sending to a screen.
  • Choose your TV.
  • Tap Start now if prompted.
  • Then open your Gallery or Google Photos app.

Smart View mirrors your whole phone screen, so the same privacy rule applies. Open the album first and silence notifications before you start.

How to use Samsung DeX for a cleaner big-screen setup

Some Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets support Samsung DeX. This can make your phone feel more like a desktop on a TV or monitor.

You can connect with a USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter. Some TVs also support wireless DeX through compatible screen mirroring. Once connected, open your photo app and display your album from the big screen.

DeX can be especially useful when you want a cleaner setup for a family gathering, reunion or backyard slideshow because you are not simply throwing your entire phone screen onto the TV.

How to connect your phone with an HDMI cable

A cable may feel old school, but it is often the most reliable method. It also avoids Wi-Fi problems at someone else’s house.

For iPhone 15 and newer USB-C models, use a USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable. Plug it into your iPhone, connect the HDMI cable to the TV or projector and switch the TV to the correct HDMI input.

For older iPhones with Lightning, use a Lightning Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable.

For Android phones, USB-C to HDMI support depends on the model. Many Samsung Galaxy phones support video output, while some other Android phones may not. If your phone supports it, plug the USB-C to HDMI adapter into your phone, connect the HDMI cable to the screen and choose the correct input.

This is one of the best options for outdoor projectors because it avoids weak backyard Wi-Fi.

How to show photos from a laptop

A laptop gives you more control when you want a polished slideshow. You can open iCloud Photos, Google Photos, OneDrive or a folder of downloaded photos. Then connect the laptop to a TV or projector with HDMI.

On Windows , press Windows key + P to choose how the screen appears.

On a Mac, connect the display and use System Settings if you need to adjust the screen arrangement.

You can also cast from some laptops to wireless displays. On Windows, press Windows key + K and select a compatible wireless display. This can work well with Miracast-enabled TVs and adapters.

The laptop method is helpful when multiple people have sent you photos after the trip, and you want everything in one place before guests arrive.

How to use a tablet as the shared screen

A tablet works well for smaller groups. It is bigger than a phone, easier to pass around and less awkward at a dinner table.

On iPad, open Photos, Google Photos or iCloud Photos . You can also AirPlay to a bigger screen if one is nearby.

On an Android tablet , open Google Photo s or your gallery app and cast to a Chromecast-enabled TV when available.

This is a good fallback when you are at someone else’s house, and you do not want to mess with their TV settings.

How to share photos on Roku

Roku gives you several options depending on your phone.

If you have an iPhone and the Roku device supports AirPlay, use AirPlay or Screen Mirroring from Control Center.

If you have Android or Windows, Roku supports screen mirroring from compatible devices. Roku also has Photo Streams in the Roku mobile app, which lets you upload photos and share a stream.

Photo Streams can be a nice option for parties because you can prepare the photos before people arrive instead of connecting your phone in the moment.

How to share photos on Fire TV

Some Fire TV smart TVs support AirPlay. If yours does, you can enable AirPlay in the Fire TV settings and share from an iPhone.

Fire TV also supports display mirroring on certain models. Go to Settings , then Display & Sounds , then Enable Display Mirroring. After that, connect from your compatible phone, tablet or computer.

Not every Fire TV device supports every mirroring option, so this is one place where the exact model can make a difference.

How a streaming device can help

A streaming device can make photo sharing easier if your older TV lacks AirPlay, Chromecast or screen mirroring. Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and Chromecast-style devices can give an older screen newer sharing features.

How to make a shared album before guests arrive

A shared album can save you from digging through your camera roll while everyone waits.

On iPhone, use iCloud Shared Albums if your guests are also in the Apple world. Select the photos , tap Share, choose Add to Shared Album and post them to the album.

Google Photos is more flexible for mixed groups. You can create a shared album, add photos and send a link. That works well when some people have iPhones and others have Android phones.

This is also the easiest way to let other people add their own vacation shots. After a group trip, ask everyone to upload their best photos to one shared album before the slideshow.

How to show vacation photos outdoors

Outdoor photo sharing needs a little more planning. Sunlight, Wi-Fi and power can all get in the way.

A portable projector is the most fun option for backyard photo nights. Use a white wall, projector screen or even a clean white sheet pulled tight. For the best picture, wait until dusk or evening.

You can connect your phone with HDMI, cast wirelessly if the projector supports it or plug in a streaming stick such as Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast or Google TV Streamer. If your projector has Google TV built in, you may be able to open Google Photos or cast directly.

For outdoor setups, bring a long extension cord, portable speaker, HDMI cable, phone adapter and backup charger. Wireless casting can work, but a cable is less likely to fail when the Wi-Fi signal is weak.

Best methods by situation

If you are at your own house, use AirPlay, Chromecast, Smart View or a shared album on your smart TV.

If you are at someone else’s house, use an HDMI cable or shared album link. That avoids asking for Wi-Fi passwords and digging through their TV menus.

If you are outside, use a projector with HDMI or a streaming stick. Keep a charger nearby because photo and video sharing can drain your phone quickly.

If you have a mixed iPhone and Android crowd, use Google Photos or a shared album link. It is usually easier than trying to make every device talk to the same TV.

If you want the least awkward option, prepare an album before people arrive. Your future self will thank you.

Privacy tips before you start sharing

Before you turn your vacation memories into a living room or backyard slideshow, take a minute to make sure you are only sharing what you actually want everyone to see.

1) Make a clean album first

Create a dedicated album with only the photos you want people to see. Hide or remove anything personal before you cast or mirror. Before you put anything on a big screen, you may also want to hide private photos on your iPhone or Android from snoops.

2) Silence alerts before you cast

Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus so messages and notifications stay off the big screen. Avoid opening your full camera roll in front of guests. Start from the album instead. Appeals court gives Trump temporary win in mail-in voting fight


A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., handed the Trump administration a temporary win on Friday in its attempt to increase federal oversight of elections. 

In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals put on hold a lower court ruling, which had blocked the U.S. Postal Service from attempting to restrict mail-in voting. 

However, the Trump administration does not yet have a green light to move forward with the proposed rule. A separate judge in Massachusetts blocked the policy last month, and that injunction still stands.

The cases center on a proposed rule from the U.S. Postal Service that sought to compel states to create lists of approved voters, as well as impose stricter regulations on mail-in ballots. 

Last month, Postmaster General David Steiner told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that under the proposed rule, the Postal Service would refuse to deliver mail-in ballots in states that do not turn over their voter lists. 

“Yes or no — if a state refuses to turn their absentee voter list over to the federal government, will the Postal Service still mail their ballots under this proposed rule?” asked Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich. 

“Under our proposed regulation, no. We would tell the state that we need the manifest,” Steiner said. 

The NAACP, which brought the lawsuit, had previously sued the Postal Service in 2020, seeking to challenge delays in delivering mail-in ballots heading into that year’s presidential election. The two sides settled in 2021, with the Postal Service agreeing to “prioritiz[e] . . . the timely delivery of Election Mail” for every national election through 2028. 

In Friday’s ruling, the appeals court said the Trump administration is likely to succeed because the lawsuit is premature — since the rule itself is not yet finalized — and not covered by a 2021 settlement between the NAACP and Postal Service. 

The appeals court also said the Trump administration demonstrated they would be irreparably harmed if the Postal Service can’t finalize and implement the rule in time for the midterms. 

“In this context, ‘there can be no do over’ once the election occurs,” the ruling said. 

While the Trump administration cannot yet move forward with the new rule, the D.C. Circuit’s ruling signals that the Trump administration may be able convince other appeals courts to let them implement the policy while the lawsuits move through the courts — potentially past the November elections.

While France and England may have fallen short of reaching the World Cup final, they still have something to play for.

The two European powerhouses will play for bronze in the World Cup’s third-place game at Miami Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on FOX.

France fell short of reaching their third straight World Cup final when they lost to Spain 2-0 on Tuesday. The French had dominated throughout the World Cup prior to the loss to Spain.

France had won by multiple goals in all but one of their six victories leading into the semifinal, a Round of 16 win over Paraguay. In seven World Cup games, they only allowed a total of four goals.

Spain’s first goal in the semifinal came off a critical mistake. Veteran defender Lucas Digne misread the ball and challenged a ball on a cross, but kicked Lamine Yamal instead, committing a foul giving Spain a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.

Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up for Spain and buried the penalty kick, giving the Spaniards a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Pedro Porro doubled the lead for Spain in the 58th minute, when he broke through the French defense and found the back of net after beating France goalkeeper Mike Maignan on a crisp pass from Dani Olmo.

The French desperately tried to get back into the game, but the Spanish defense was too sound for them to break through. Spain held on for a historic sixth shutout of this World Cup.

For England, they were about 35 minutes plus stoppage time from advancing to the World Cup final after taking a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute.

Anthony Gordon scored when he buried a cross from Morgan Rogers to put England on the board with an acrobatic finish. Harry Kane sparked the counter with a long pass that left the Argentina defense flummoxed for the first time all game.

Unfortunately for England, it was all Argentina after that. After falling behind, the Argentines made a furious push to tie the game.

Argentina was held off the scoresheet for 85 minutes, and finally broke through when Lionel Messi set up Enzo Fernandez just outside of the penalty box, and the 25-year-old hooked a shot around England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into the back of the net to knot it at 1-1.

Lautaro Martinez then played the hero as he came off the bench and into Argentine soccer lore by scoring the winning goal in stoppage time. In the 92nd minute, Messi recorded his second assist after he gathered a loose ball and played a beautiful pass into the penalty area, where Martinez was waiting unmarked. Martinez headed the ball past Pickford to send the Argentine fans into a frenzy as they completed the comeback.

Argentina’s comeback ended the Three Lions’ bid for a World Cup title, but England can still win bronze by beating France on Saturday.

The 48-team FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament now comes down to one game: Spain against Argentina.

It is hard to argue that the European champions and world number one team taking on the South American champions and World Cup holders is not a fitting finale.

France had stormed into the pole position as favourites during the tournament, while England seemed to have their best chance since their only win 60 years ago.

Nevertheless, there is plenty to pick through when it comes to the finalists, so Al Jazeera does exactly that:

Overview: If their 2022 challenge in Qatar got off to a shocking start, with defeat by Saudi Arabia, then the 2026 campaign for Argentina could be seen as a flyer in comparison.

The truth, however, is that this has been far from a vintage Argentina, especially with Lionel Messi still the pivot of the team. The 39-year-old is, nevertheless, the reason that the title defence is ongoing.

The last side to win back-to-back World Cups was Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Italy have also retained a title, so it is a very short list that Argentina are seeking to join.

Strengths: Look no further than Messi for Argentina’s clear and unmatched – at least at this tournament – strength. The Inter Miami forward is set to win the Golden Boot with eight goals. The midfield trio holding in front of the back line: Enzo Fernandes, Alexis Mac Allister and Paredes, have been seen as the enforcers of the tournament, protecting Messi as much as the back line; they have even been compared to personal bodyguards for the Argentina legend.

Weaknesses: Due to the weight of reliance on Messi, Argentina’s weakness has to be their ability to replace their main man. Should Messi sustain an injury, Argentina’s odds – already wide – would stretch further. They have pace and guile in Giuliano Simeone and Julian Alvarez, and goals in Lautaro Martinez; they also have power in their defence and holding midfielders, but do they have a spark without Messi? Arguably, no team at World Cup 2026 has been more reliant on one player.

Form guide: Argentina have not lost a match since they were beaten 1-0 in Ecuador in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match. Since then, the South American champions have gone on a 14-game winning streak.

The Argentinians rattled in eight goals as they swept the group stage of the World Cup, conceding only once – in their final game against Jordan when already qualified for the round of 32.

The knockouts have proved far trickier, with 3-2 wins recorded in the last 32 and last 16, against Cape Verde and Egypt, respectively.

Their progress from the quarterfinals was secured by a 3-1 win against Switzerland, but that game – much like the Cape Verde win – required extra time.

The 2-1 semifinal win against England saw a second great turnaround at the tournament, having trailed the Egyptians 2-0 with 11 minutes of the 90 remaining.

Players to watch: Argentina not only threw the kitchen sink at England, but they also threw the extent of their attacking talent that started on the bench.

Along with Lautaro Martinez, coach Lionel Scaloni threw on Rodrigo De Paul and Nicolas Gonzalez. Although Messi is irreplaceable, the Argentinians are likely to need the full extent of the resources around him if they are to claim the win.

At the other end, Lisandro Martinez remains the main man at the heart of the defence.

Overview: Spain 

Spain have recovered from two terrible World Cup campaigns – having not reached the quarterfinals at the last two editions – to have the chance of becoming the reigning European and World champions for the second time.

The Spanish lifted the global title for the only time in their history in 2014, two years after their first continental crown.

Their number one ranking by FIFA on entering the tournament is in large part based on the victory at Euro 2024.

Strengths: Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, now 19 and 24, respectively, were the rising stars of Spain’s continental win in 2024, but neither has fired at the World Cup.

Yamal’s fitness entering the tournament was a concern, given he missed the end of the domestic Spanish season with a hamstring injury, while Williams has mostly been restricted to cameos from the bench in North America.

As lauded as Argentina’s defence has been, Spain have only conceded one goal at the tournament so far. Their organisation as a nation, be it at club or international level, is rarely anything other than immaculate.

The rapid, short passing game “Tiki-taki” started in Spain during Pep Guardiola’s time with Barcelona – ironically, when Messi was leading the line for the Catalan club and was the main reason for its success.

The Spaniards will once again look for their heavy possession-based game to win the day, with Rodri and Fabian Ruiz acting as the fulcrums in midfield.

Weaknesses: As in most walks of life, a strength can also be a weakness. Where question marks have been raised about Spain at this edition, it has mostly surrounded a pedestrian pace.

The short passing game remains, but it has not been as swift and effective this time around, especially against the low block – something they are likely to face against Argentina.

Most of the sides have set up that way against the Spanish so far, with Cape Verde, Uruguay, Portugal and Belgium all making life exceptionally difficult. The neutral will be hoping very much for an early Spain goal, therefore bringing the Argentinians out to play.

Form guide: The opening match of the tournament was against Cape Verde, and the 0-0 draw that the debutants from Africa secured was regarded as one of the great World Cup shocks in the group stage.

A much-needed win against Saudi Arabia followed, also with a more than useful 4-0 margin, before a narrow 1-0 win against Uruguay saw Spain through as group winners.

Austria were dismissed 3-0 in the last 32, but then came the big tests against Portugal and Belgium. Neither was shaken off easily, with one-goal winning margins, but they were victories nonetheless.

The ultimate test at this edition, for all teams hopeful of lifting the trophy, was France – it was a challenge that Spain passed with flying colours.

Spain have not tasted defeat in 37 matches, dating back to a 1-0 reverse in an international friendly against Colombia in March 2024.

Their last defeat in a competitive match came against Scotland in a Euro 2024 qualifier in March 2023.

Players to watch: Yamal has only netted once at this edition, in the trouncing of Saudi Arabia, while their other starlet, Williams, has yet to score.

It feels as though something special must come from one of them, even if it is in a late moment of desperation, as per Messi’s two late shows to save Argentina already.

A large factor of the final is whether at least one of the megastars on show will shine, and in doing so leave their indelible impression.

It is hard to imagine the tournament will pass without Yamal producing something to remember. The winger secured a second successive La Liga title with Barcelona this season and was named Player of the Season.

Both sides will happily take a dull 1-0 win, if that is what it takes. The expecting global audience will hope for anything but.

Calls for guidance to help Jersey families claim back childcare costs


More guidance for parents claiming back money from the government’s childcare funding scheme is needed, the head of the Jersey Child Care Trust (JCCT) has said.

In February, the government said parents of a child eligible from January to August 2026 could apply for up to £4,180, and parents of children eligible for a full school year from the 1 September 2026 would be able to apply for up to £6,270.

But some families have had problems claiming money back from the States after being told they had provided ‘invalid receipts’ for childcare.

JCCT CEO Fiona Vacher said as it was a pilot scheme, it was likely problems would be discovered.

She said: “We understand that there have been some cases through our contacts with parents and I think that’s around parents submitting bills rather than receipts.

“We knew there would be difficulties and I know the government is just responding to that.”

Vacher said the government could provide “a bit more information for parents about how they and what they submit”.

Deputy Catherine Curtis, the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, said 537 applications had been approved for 409 families with £1.4m paid out since the scheme began.

She added that no formal complaints had been recorded but that feedback was “being reviewed to enable continuous improvement”.

US strikes hit Iran for seventh consecutive night


The US military said it carried out the seventh night of strikes on Iran since President Donald Trump declared the temporary ceasefire agreement was “over”.

US Central Command (Centcom) said its forces “hit surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities”.

Iran said it responded by targeting US allies in the region including Kuwait, which said another of its power and water plants had been hit following a similar attack the previous day.

“Another electricity and water distillation plant was targeted by a hostile attack that led to a fire erupting in one of the plant’s components,” with some power generation units deactivated, the ministry of electricity and water said.

Jordan’s military also said it had intercepted 10 Iranian missiles fired into its airspace overnight. No damage was reported. Bahrain also said its air defences had “thwarted” Iranian attacks.

Centcom said it had ended its strikes at 21:30 ET (02:30 BST) after several hours.

“US forces employed fighter aircraft, aerial drones, and warships in addition to other assets,” it said in its statement.

Explosions were heard in the central city of Yazd and at Qeshm island and the port of Bandar Abbas next to the strait, Iranian state media reported.

The US and Iran agreed to stop fighting in June to enable talks to end the war.

The ceasefire was largely observed, even though there were Iranian attacks on oil tankers to force them to comply with Tehran’s demands that ships seek authorisation to cross the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian attacks on shipping were followed by US strikes against Iran.

However, the talks appeared to make no headway and Trump declared the ceasefire over last week.

Since then, in addition to attacking Iranian sites, the US has also re-imposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran has declared the Strait closed to shipping and traffic has largely stopped.

A fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas used to transit through the strait and the head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, has said he has concerns about global energy supplies.

The US military has also denied a report in Iran’s Fars news agency that two oil tankers “exploded and caught fire while passing through a mined route south of the Strait of Hormuz”. Centcom said: “Like most IRGC claims, this is false.”
