Bahamas plane crash that killed 10 included musicians and a DJ, union says

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Musicians and a DJ are among the dead in a plane crash in the Bahamas that killed 10, the Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union said Saturday, a day after the deadly incident.

The crash prompted the government to temporarily ground Flamingo Air flights. It happened in North Andros, located in waters just west of Nassau, the archipelago’s capital.

“Among the dearly departed are some of the talented and vibrant members of our entertainment community, including members of The Pond Band and a DJ,” the union said in a statement on X.

“(Their) passion, dedication, and artistry touched so many lives and helped to enrich the cultural fabric of The Bahamas,” the union added.

The plane had departed Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau and was headed to San Andros when it crashed, according to the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority.

The Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation said in a statement that the suspension of Flamingo Air’s air operator certificate was only a precautionary safety measure as officials investigate the cause of the crash. The ministry said the suspension is a result of two safety incidents that happened Friday.

During the press conference, Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis said the first incident earlier Friday involved a Flamingo Air plane. She said it was en route to Mayaguana when the pilot reported a concern and turned back to Nassau. After the plane landed and the passengers deboarded, the plane caught fire, she said. That incident also is under investigation.

“For 15 minutes of extra work, the company pays you”: Man shares how corporate life in Japan is different from rest of the world

A social media video shared by digital creator Ankit Purohit, who says he has been working in Japan for the past 10 years, is giving viewers a glimpse into the country’s unique office culture. In the video, he explains that while finding a job in Japan may not be very difficult, understanding the country’s workplace etiquette is equally important. From punctuality and respect for time to overtime pay and work-life boundaries, he highlights several practices that make Japanese workplaces stand out.

Punctuality is a workplace priority

According to Ankit Purohit, one of the biggest aspects of Japanese office culture is punctuality. He explains that employees are expected to arrive before their official reporting time rather than exactly at it. For example, if office hours begin at 9 a.m., workers are generally expected to be present before 9 o’clock.He says this reflects the high value that Japanese workplaces place on discipline, respect for schedules and professionalism.

Status matters less than discipline

Another point highlighted in the video is the lack of emphasis on status symbols during the daily commute. Ankit says that even company CEOs often travel to work by train.According to him, there is little comparison over whether someone arrives by car, bike or public transport. Instead, the focus remains on work rather than displays of hierarchy or personal wealth.He also mentions that lunchtime is considered personal time. Most offices have a lunch break from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., during which employees can relax. Rather than carrying homemade meals, many Japanese workers prefer buying ready-made bento meals from convenience stores.

Small gestures and strong work-life balance

Ankit also points out a custom related to elevators in Japan. If a person is standing near the control panel, they are expected to hold the door open by pressing the appropriate button until everyone else has exited. Only after ensuring everyone else has exited does the person near the controls step out. He further says that Japanese companies generally compensate employees even for short overtime periods. According to him, if an employee works just 15 extra minutes beyond scheduled hours, they are paid for that additional time.Another aspect he highlights is the respect for personal time after work. Once employees log out for the day, managers generally do not call them with additional work or expect them to work on their day off. This helps create a healthier balance between professional responsibilities and personal life.Purohit’s video provides a small peek into the influence of discipline, respect, and consideration in the workplace practices of Japan. The video provides an insight into how punctuality and discipline, as well as proper etiquette in public places, are maintained in the Japanese workplace in addition to making sure that overtime payments are made for any extra effort put in by employees.Although workplace cultures vary from country to country and even from organisation to organisation, Purohit’s experiences have caught the attention of people on social media due to the high importance given to punctuality, equality, and work-life balance in Japanese culture.

Russian attacks kill 6, wound 29, as Ukrainian forces target oil tankers

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian attacks on Ukraine killed six people, including a child, and wounded 29, officials said Saturday, adding that Ukrainian forces damaged more than two dozen Russian tankers and other vessels in the Sea of Azov.

Ukraine’s General Staff said 21 tankers used to transport oil and petroleum products were damaged overnight, in addition to four tugboats, two cargo ships and a dredging vessel. Russian officials said one person was killed in the Ukrainian drone strikes and that only four ships came under attack.

In Ukraine’s northeast Sumy region, four people were killed, including a child, and 17 people were wounded when two aerial glide bombs hit a crowded area where civilians were present, said Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov.

Eleven people, including one child, were wounded in missile and drone attacks overnight on Kyiv, the State Emergency Service reported. In the southern region of Odesa, two people were killed after a Russian missile struck a building, said regional head Oleh Kiper. Another man was wounded by shrapnel.

Explosions and fires were reported across Kyiv’s Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts, the emergency service said.

Russia launched 12 missiles, including six ballistic missiles, along with 121 drones against Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. He said most of the drones and some of the missiles were shot down, but the ballistic missiles reached their targets, reiterating Ukraine’s dire air defense gaps.

Ukrainian air defenses said they shot down or electronically suppressed two missiles and 111 drones. The air force said direct hits were recorded at 11 locations.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces targeted drone production facilities in Kyiv, as well as the ports of Izmail and Chornomorsk in the Odesa region.

The ministry also said Russian air defenses destroyed 178 Ukrainian drones overnight over eight Russian regions, as well as over the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula and the Black and Azov seas.

Dave Portnoy explains why he wants

Dave Portnoy has built a business empire on his viral pizza reviews and brash social media personality. Now, the “Barstool Sports” creator is looking back on his journey to the top in his new memoir, “Cancel Me If You Can.” 

Long before he started ranking pizzas across the country, Portnoy decided to quit a sales job he hated and start his own media enterprise. That project was the early iteration of “Barstool Sports.” At the time, the publication was a four-page sports newspaper, which Portnoy passed out for free. 

“I didn’t care if I was working, you know, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; it was better than doing what I was doing,” Portnoy told CBS Saturday Morning. “Every day, I felt like we were making tiny steps. They may be (a) reader one day, and we went to two the next.” 

The goal of “Barstool Sports,” then and now, is to “be honest and authentic to readers,” Portnoy said. To build the company that did that, Portnoy hired talented people and let them run wild. One of those hires was Alex Cooper, who would go on to create the hit podcast “Call Her Daddy.” 

Portnoy said he wanted “Barstool Sports” to be like “Saturday Night Live” — a place where great talent could be established and developed.

“I wanted young comedians, talent, to apply to Barstool, and then hopefully they become superstars and some of them may leave,” Portnoy said. So we sign you for a contract and the hope is that you explode and get big, and we monetize you during that time and then at the end of that contract, we can either re-sign you if we can afford you … or you can go to great success.” 

“Barstool Sports” is now more than just a publication. The Barstool Fund, started in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, helped over 400 businesses pay their bills and keep their doors open. 

Portnoy has also begun to dip his toes into the political waters. He openly considered running for mayor in New York City, and has endorsed politicians, including current President Trump. He told “CBS Saturday Morning” that he sees engaging in politics as a “civic duty.” 

“I actually am like, up at night on some of the things that’s going on in politics,” Portnoy said. “That’s what would drive me to do it.” 

He wants readers to know that “Cancel Me If You Can” isn’t him asking to be understood. 

“I don’t think I’m ever going to be understood by people who don’t like me. I’ve kind of come to that conclusion,” Portnoy said. “People like me will always like me. People who don’t, won’t. I could give somebody who hates my guts like $100 for free and they’d want $200.” 

Though he appreciated the chance to create “a record” of the founding of “Barstool Sports,” Portnoy said he doesn’t plan on writing another book. 

“When this was pitched to me, the idea of seeing my book, like in an airport walking by, I was like, ‘That’s really cool,'” Portnoy said. “I’m super happy it’s over, and I’m glad I did it, but I would never do it again.”

Internet is up in arms about ESPN FPI rankings, but everyone is missing one key point

As we inch closer to the start of the college football season, one of the byproducts of this point in the offseason is the introduction of preseason polls and predictions.

With conference media days popping up, media members of each respective league will attempt to prognosticate and predict where each team will finish in the standings while other polls will rank the teams on a number of different criteria before the start of the year.

One of the most infamous and controversial “polls” is ESPN’s Football Power Index — FPI for short — and the latest edition of it was just unleashed on an unsuspecting and incensed public.

IS ANOTHER TEAM READY TO TAKE OVER THE TOP OF THE BIG TEN FROM INDIANA AND OHIO STATE?

These 25 teams and their placement in the FPI has caused more consternation on social media than anything outside of maybe politics, as many angry fans from all over have directed their ire towards the power index, but they’re missing a key point in their anger.

The Football Power Index is exactly what the name suggests: a power index for football teams.

It’s not a predicted finish for the top 25 at the end of the season, which is exactly what I see people bring up.

“Texas was number one in last year’s preseason FPI, and they didn’t even make the Playoff.”

Correct, but just because they were number one in the preseason FPI doesn’t mean they were supposed to finish number one in the final AP Poll.

The FPI rates teams based on a number of factors and simulations from a model to predict which teams would be favored on a neutral site.

To borrow a phrase from Josh Pate, “It’s a rating, not a ranking.”

Let’s go back to Texas.

They were number one in last season’s preseason FPI based on the talent they had on their roster, and by the end of the season, you could argue they were playing the best football of anyone.

The power rating may have been a little early on Arch Manning, but once he started playing up to his potential, the rest of the team looked like world beaters.

They only missed the College Football Playoff by virtue of a road loss in early October to the Florida Gators.

Speaking of those same Gators, many people tried to dunk on them for being in the top 20 of last season’s opening FPI ratings.

After all, they did finish 4-8 and ended up firing their head coach, but there’s more to it than that.

Talent wise, the Gators were right up there with anyone, and you could argue they had a top-20 roster to go along with their top-20 power rating (which is a large portion of what goes into the FPI’s ratings).

Florida took down Texas as mentioned above, and lost to two CFP teams (Ole Miss and Georgia) by a combined 14 points and had the ball with a chance to win late in the fourth quarter of both games.

Billy Napier wasn’t fired because he went 4-8 with 4-8 talent. He was fired for going 4-8 with 9-3 talent.

The Gators had seven players drafted in the 2026 NFL Draft in April and several more players on their roster were some of the most coveted in the transfer portal, namely edge rusher Jayden Woods and running back Jadan Baugh.

Florida is just one example, but many on the internet are crying about SEC bias in the latest FPI.

A staggering 12 teams from the Southeastern Conference were included in the ratings, so that clearly means ESPN is in bed with the SEC once again, right?

For starters, a large portion of the ratings come from a computer model, and although models can be programmed with certain biases as a result of their creator, I don’t think that’s the case here.

Also, if you look at the top 25 best odds of teams to win the national championship, you’ll see the same number of teams from the SEC (12) that you see in the FPI.

Speaking of SEC bias, I notice the same people banging that drum are ignoring the fact that Penn State and Clemson were placed fifth and 11th, respectively, in the 2025 preseason FPI ratings. Both the Tigers and Nittany Lions finished 7-6 and were duking it out in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl by season’s end.

Neither team hails from the SEC, so was FPI biased in rating those two teams as high as it did? Not likely.

Both teams had an embarrassment of riches in terms of roster talent and just grossly underperformed.

James Franklin was sent packing from Happy Valley as a result and Dabo Swinney probably would have been fired too if he wasn’t such a legend at Clemson.

It’s worth noting that Penn State took eventual national champion Indiana to the wire in a regular season game, so it’s not like the Nittany Lions were complete pushovers either. All of this is a long-winded way of saying that, yes, FPI is flawed, as is any rating system.

It’s just a model used to predict spreads and odds based on neutral field favorability.

As a matter of fact, this edition of the FPI looks pretty accurate when compared to what most are saying about the landscape of college football for 2026.

The Big Ten has the better top end, with two of the best teams in the country in Oregon and Ohio State and another sitting just outside the top five in Indiana, while the SEC might be the deeper conference overall, albeit with a lower ceiling than the Big Ten.

I understand it’s fun to scream and yell about anything and everything on the internet these days, but most people don’t even understand what they’re whining about.

Just remember: it’s a rating, not a ranking. And let’s try to get through this offseason without losing our minds any more than we already have.

15 Indian tourists killed after speedboat capsizes in southern Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam — A boat returning from an island trip in southern Vietnam capsized on Saturday, killing 15 Indian tourists less than half a kilometer (0.30 mile) from shore, as passengers shouted for help, officials and a witness said.

The speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned Saturday afternoon shortly after leaving Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, which is near Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, authorities were quoted as saying.

“The boat had not even gone half a kilometer when it just tipped over,” Ashish Kumar, an Indian who witnessed the accident, told The Associated Press over the phone. “We screamed, ‘Help! Help!’”

He said nearby boats immediately rushed to the rescue. “But by then it was too late,” he said.

Kumar said that there was no emergency medical care available at the shore when survivors were brought back.

He said that at least some of the passengers were on a company tour organized by their employer, which makes smartphones and other electronics.

Three of his friends were on the boat. “Two have died, and the other, I was told, is critical,” he said.

India’s Lava International, a smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturer, confirmed that some of its employees and channel partners were among those involved in the accident. “Our immediate priority is to extend all possible support to those affected and their families,” it said.

VN Express news site quoted witnesses as saying that some people were trapped inside the capsized boat. Footage on Vietnamese TV showed rough seas and strong winds as rescue teams threw life buoys to people in the water. Jet skis ferried survivors back to shore while people on the beach provided first aid.

Twenty-one people were rescued, and all the dead were recovered, authorities said. The injured were taken to hospitals.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered an investigation and directed authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He also asked officials to review waterway and maritime safety in the area where the accident happened.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the tragedy and wrote on social media that the Indian Embassy was providing all possible assistance.

Many of those on board are believed to be from India’s southern Telangana and Tamil Nadu states.

Authorities in Telangana have set up a control room to coordinate assistance and provide information to their families. The Tamil Nadu chief minister wrote on social media that he had urged Indian authorities to provide assistance to the victims and ensure that the bodies of those killed are brought back as soon as possible.

Phu Quoc in the Gulf of Thailand is one of Vietnam’s most popular beach destinations. Hon May Rut island is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Phu Quoc. They’re known for their white-sand beaches and clear waters and draw millions of domestic and foreign tourists each year.

India is one of Vietnam’s fastest growing tourism markets. The Southeast Asian country welcomed about 750,000 Indians in 2025, up nearly 50% from the previous year.

Officials attribute the growth to an expanding network of direct flights between major Indian and Vietnamese cities, and Vietnam’s liberal e-visa policy.
