Ghirardelli recalls hot cocoa and a dozen other drink mixes over salmonella fears


Ghirardelli has recalled more than a dozen of its powdered beverage mixes over concerns that the products could be contaminated with salmonella.

Consumers should look in their pantries to see whether they have any hot cocoa or frappe mixes part of the recall, following the San Francisco chocolate company’s announcement Monday.

Salmonella bacteria are a leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacteria can cause serious and in some cases, fatal, infections.

Healthy people infected with salmonella usually experience fever, diarrhea and vomiting, according to a company recall notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday. Young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems can die from salmonella infection.

Ghirardelli recalled the drink mixes after California Dairies, Inc. recalled milk powder over concerns of potential salmonella contamination. The milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer and was an ingredient in powdered drink mixes.

The chocolate company said it was issuing the recall “out of an abundance of caution,” and that no illnesses were reported so far.

“Neither we, our third-party manufacturer nor the milk powder supplier have received reports of illness or injury related to this issue to date, and our own rigorous testing has not identified any impacted powdered beverage mixes,” Ghirardelli said in a statement.

“Nothing is more important to us than the safety and quality of our products, and we’re taking this step out of an abundance of caution,” the statement continued.

The recalled drink mixes are sold in bulk and intended for food service, but some of the products may have also been sold to consumers online.

Consumers who bought any of the recalled products are advised to contact Ghirardelli at 1-844-776-0419.

Ghirardelli said in its statement that it is “working with our partners to return or dispose of potentially impacted powdered beverage mixes distributed to customers who have been informed of the recall.”

Talks to bail out Spirit Airlines stall as company teeters toward collapse


Spirit Airlines only has enough available cash to continue operations for a matter of days, not weeks, and talks for a government-backed rescue of the no-frills carrier have stalled, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

Facing two bankruptcies since 2024 and rising fuel prices due to the Iran war, Spirit has sought a lifeline from the federal government. 

The Trump administration has offered to come to the airline’s aid, weighing a deal in which the government would lend Spirit $500 million in exchange for the right to take control of 90% of the company, CBS News has previously reported.

But the deal — which would make the government the senior bondholder, meaning it would get paid back before others — won’t happen unless Spirit’s creditors sign off.

Some of Spirit bondholders continue to balk at a government deal, sources said.

Ken Griffin’s Citadel submitted a counterproposal, but it was rejected by the government. 

Two other creditors — Ares Management Corp. and Cyrus Capital — are also opposed to the government plan, two U.S. officials told CBS News.

A bankruptcy hearing planned for Thursday was postponed, according to a Wednesday court filing that noted conversations on the government bailout package are continuing. 

Last week, it was revealed in a bankruptcy court hearing that Spirit skipped an interest payment, which could put the airline in default on its debtor-in-possession agreement with creditors. The creditors have not delivered notice that they plan to enforce a default, according to a Thursday court filing. Spirit has $250 million in cash, but creditors have a lien on it. 

President Trump has said he is open to a government takeover of Spirit “for the right price,” arguing the move could save thousands of jobs and telling reporters the airline has “some good aircraft” and “some good assets.” Spirit leased most of its planes as of the end of 2025, and has moved to shrink its fleet this year as part of a bankruptcy reorganization process.

The Trump administration is considering invoking the Defense Production Act’s emergency powers to extend a loan to Spirit, CBS News was first to report last week. 

The airline’s excess capacity would then be used for military operations like transporting troops and cargo. The company would then likely be sold to another airline when it emerges from bankruptcy.

A White House official said: “The Trump administration continues to monitor the health of the American aviation industry and explore possible options to help passengers and airline employees.”

Representatives for Spirit Airlines didn’t immediately respond to CBS News’ request for comment Wednesday.

Elon Musk told a court on Wednesday that he was a “fool” for providing funding to launch ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

Testifying in a case he brought against OpenAI, the billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX said he continued to finance OpenAI after receiving assurances from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that the company would remain a nonprofit. However, Musk said he began to have doubts about the company’s direction and said he later felt betrayed. 

Musk alleged in his civil lawsuit that OpenAI, Altman, and OpenAI President Greg Brockman reneged on the AI company’s founding agreement by prioritizing profit over a promise to keep OpenAI as a nonprofit dedicated to human progress. 

The trial, playing out in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, started Monday and is expected to last about four weeks.

Musk contributed $38 million in funding to OpenAI from December 2015 through May 2017. The AI company is now valued at more than $85 billion.

Lawyers for OpenAI reject Musk’s allegations, saying that company leaders never promised it would remain a nonprofit forever. The company has argued Musk’s legal challenge is aimed at undercutting OpenAI’s rapid growth and bolstering Musk’s xAI, which he launched in 2023 as a competitor.

Heated cross-examination

During cross-examination, Musk repeatedly pushed back on questions. OpenAI lawyer William Savitt asked about emails Musk wrote before OpenAI’s founding in 2015, including whether it would be better to make it a standard for-profit company and whether tax deductions would apply to his donations to the nonprofit.

“Your questions are not simple,” Musk said. “They are designed to trick me essentially.” Any simple answer, he said, would be misleading the jury.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers stepped in, asking Musk to answer whether it’s true or false that OpenAI was formed as a nonprofit in December 2015. Musk said in that case, the answer was yes, but added that it is not always simple, comparing it to asking “have you stopped beating your wife?”

“We are not going to go there,” the judge replied, to laughs in the courtroom.

High stakes

Despite moments of levity, the stakes are high at the trial, which could sway the balance of power in artificial intelligence. Musk’s lawsuit seeks to oust Altman from OpenAI’s board. If Musk wins, it could also derail OpenAI’s plans for an initial public offering.

Musk’s decision to stop funding the company contributed to a bitter falling out between the former allies that’s been evident throughout the trial. On Wednesday, Musk said his views on Altman and his OpenAI cofounders had three phases — from initial excitement to losing confidence to a period in late 2022 when he thought “wait a second, these guys are betraying their promise.”

Lawyers for OpenAI have said Musk sought to control the company for himself.

Musk repeatedly testified that while he initially sought a majority stake in OpenAI and control of four out of seven board seats, this would eventually be diluted when OpenAI grew and gained more shareholders. He compared it to his stake in Tesla, which he said is now around 15% after he initially had a majority stake when the electric car maker was founded over two decades ago.

OpenAI, however, claims there were no assurances that he would eventually relinquish his board majority.

More than half of people over 50 have experienced hemorrhoids, according to the National Institutes of Health and other medical sources.

To help patients and providers navigate this common issue, the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) recently released updated clinical practice guidelines in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The update focuses on a simple approach, emphasizing lifestyle modifications over quick-fix products.

Hemorrhoids are swollen, enlarged veins that develop both internally and externally. According to the Cleveland Clinic, they can range from a minor annoyance to a source of significant pain and rectal bleeding.

Experts estimate that one in 20 Americans have hemorrhoids that irritate them. They become more common with age.

They are also particularly common during pregnancy due to increased pelvic pressure, though these cases can usually be managed with conservative symptom care.

One takeaway from the AGA update is that a promising treatment for hemorrhoids is often found in the pantry rather than the pharmacy. The experts labeled increased fiber intake as a “reasonable first-line therapy.”

By softening the stool and increasing its bulk, fiber reduces the need for straining, a culprit behind hemorrhoid flare-ups.

Most Americans are nowhere near the recommended daily fiber intake.

The USDA Dietary Guidelines recommend 22 to 28 grams for women and 28 to 45 grams for men, but data suggest that 90% of women and 97% of men fall short.

The AGA highlighted that restroom habits are also a contributing factor.

People may reach for sitz baths or topical creams at the first sign of discomfort, but the AGA says there is limited data to support their long-term effectiveness.

The Pittsburgh Penguins remain alive in the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Philadelphia Flyers despite going down 3-0 to begin the first-round series.

Game 6 is set for puck drop in Philadelphia on Wednesday night, and there’s no need to explain the importance for both sides. Either way, Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One,” has loved everything about this series.

“Boy, this has been really good hockey. It’s fast, it’s physical, there’s a lot of skill. It’s been enjoyable to watch. It’s great for hockey,” Gretzky said on the “Game Notes” podcast.

But many didn’t believe we’d see a Game 6 in this series after how the Flyers dominated the Penguins in the first three matchups. However, Gretzky warns anyone still believing the Flyers will eventually close this out to never doubt a Sidney Crosby-led Penguins squad.

“You never count Crosby out, right? Even at 3-0, if there’s one team that has the ability to come back, my goodness, [the Penguins] have so much firepower with him and [Evgeni] Malkin. They made a goaltending change, and it seems to have perked the team.”

The first three games saw Stuart Skinner in net for Pittsburgh, but head coach Dan Muse decided to give Arturs Silovs the nod in a win-or-go-home Game 4, among other line changes.

The Latvian netminder has been nails for the Penguins, while the offense has found its way for the team with their backs against the wall.

That isn’t to say Gretzky doesn’t like what he’s seen on the other bench.

The Flyers, one of the youngest teams in the NHL, had to go on a run just to make it into the playoffs. They caught fire at just the right time, and that momentum resulted in a dominant start to the series.

“Philly is playing with a lot of guts and energy,” Gretzky explained. “I talked to one of the [NHL’s] coaches in the last 10 games of the season, and they played Philly. He said it was one of the hardest teams they had to play against. They just play the right way. They finish checks, they play with energy. I really like their goaltender. I think he’s a solid netminder. Playoff time, you got to have goaltending, man, or you don’t have a chance.

“So, gosh, this is such a big game for a young team like Philly. It’s going to be exciting to watch.”

What seemed like a quick ending in the first round has turned into a thrilling Game 6, with Crosby’s Penguins looking to do everything they can to get it back to Pittsburgh for a decisive Game 7.

Gretzky knows Crosby is telling his teammates what he needs to get them in the right frame of mind for a raucous Philly crowd on Wednesday night.

“It’s really difficult, especially if you get down 3-0 and the fourth game is on the road. That’s tough,” Gretzky said. “It takes leadership and experience to understand, listen, you gotta win four games. It’s all cliches, and I know everybody says the right thing. But ultimately, you got to have that confidence to win one game.

“So, you win Game 4 and you’re saying on the plane ride home, ‘Listen, we’re back in this. We’re going home. Our building. Let’s win Game 5.’ Then, all the momentum switches to us and all the pressure sort of goes to the Flyers. Obviously, Sid’s been one of the greatest captains ever during his time in Pittsburgh.”

Crosby, the three-time Stanley Cup champion during his future Hall of Fame career in Pittsburgh, has tallied a point in each of the last three games against the Flyers. He had two assists in the 3-2 victory in Game 5, while scoring his first Stanley Cup Playoffs goal since 2022 in Game 4.

M&M’s is joining the Devil Wears Prada 2 hype train by introducing a new color to its candy lineup.

Inspired by an iconic line from the 2006 film — and to coincide with Friday’s release of the sequel — M&M’s is launching an all-cerulean pack.

The color became synonymous with the beloved original film after Meryl Streep’s character, diabolical fashion editor Miranda Priestly, bluntly told Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs: “But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.”

Available in limited quantities, the all-cerulean packs will be available for free Friday at 11 a.m. ET while supplies last.

Returning to star in the sequel, which hits theaters Friday, are original cast members Streep, Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. The new film follows Priestly (Streep) as she clashes with her former assistant-turned-rival executive Emily Charlton (Blunt) over limited advertising dollars in the declining world of print journalism.

The original comedy drama, released in 2006, was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name. The movie made over $326 million at the international box office, and Streep was nominated for the best actress award by the Screen Actors Guild.

The highly anticipated sequel has prompted several chain stores and brands to release film-related merchandise.

Old Navy has launched a cerulean sweater complete with the movie’s signature red stiletto logo emblazoned on the left-hand side of the chest. The clothing company also has a cerulean sweatshirt with another Priestly zinger — “Please bore someone else with your questions” — printed across the back.

Target has also capitalized on the cerulean craze, printing the sweater quote on a tank top, and launching a series of sweaters and t-shirts with the film’s branding.

Amazon is selling a collection of mugs and t-shirts with quotes and characters from the first film, while Kohl’s, Shein, and Hot Topic are just some of the other stores also hawking Devil Wears Prada-branded merch.

Unsurprisingly, movie chains — including Cinemark, AMC and Regal — are selling a variety of items, including branded popcorn tins, tumblers, and souvenir cups.

But the craze has extended even beyond basic branded sweatshirts and wine glasses. Clothing company Lulus has released a line of dresses — including, of course, florals and cerulean — inspired by the first film as well as the Met Gala scene teased in the sequel’s trailer.

After yet another assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, debate over late-night political talk show host Jimmy Kimmel continues. 

Kimmel, who was ostensibly hired to host a comedy show, rarely even attempts comedy. Consumed by hatred for Trump and anyone not on the far left, Kimmel has consistently and defiantly argued against anyone claiming that the job of a comic is to do comedy.

That contradiction reared its ugly head again when Kimmel made an objectively poor joke about Melania Trump having the glow of an “expectant widow.” Whether the joke was in poor taste or not is a matter of personal opinion, but it was poorly constructed, poorly executed, and, like most of Kimmel’s “material,” received little-to-no reaction. 

But after another attempt on the president’s life, many pointed to the continued rhetoric from Kimmel and many other figures on the left comparing Trump and his supporters to Nazis or other extremist ideologies. Meanwhile, Kimmel’s defenders have said outcry over a joke is unwarranted and an attack on free speech.

One of Kimmel’s defenders? CNN host Jake Tapper. Except, naturally, in rushing to protect him, Tapper abandoned what he previously said about other jokes…including jokes targeting Kimmel.

In early 2024, NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers made headlines by joking about Kimmel appearing on the Epstein List during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on ESPN. “There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, who’s really hoping that list doesn’t come out,” Rodgers said.

Kimmel, who oddly was extremely sensitive over a joke, then threatened to sue Rodgers, saying “Keep it up and we’ll debate the facts further in court.”

But his hypocrisy pales in comparison to his buddy Jake Tapper. Tapper this week rushed to Kimmel’s defense, saying “Journalism and jokes are not calls for violence. Calls for violence are calls for violence.”

He wasn’t done there. Tapper then haughtily defended Kimmel by saying that there’s “zero evidence” the alleged assassin was inspired by Kimmel. 

“Now, there is zero evidence — zero evidence that the would-be, alleged assassin heard the joke….is it fair to judge Jimmy Kimmel’s joke in light of what happened at the dinner two nights later?”

He continued, saying there’s a “crusade” against Kimmel and free speech by the Trump administration.

“But this crusade against Kimmel was predictable because the Trump administration’s attempt to use Saturday’s shooting as justification to stop all critical coverage, whether journalistic or comedic, of Donald Trump.”

Well, hopefully one day Jake Tapper can meet previous versions of Jake Tapper who said the exact opposite when his party was the one being targeted by “stochastic” violence. Back in 2024,  Tapper said Aaron Rodgers was facing “intense, and frankly, well deserved criticism” after his joke targeting “popular late night comedian” Jimmy Kimmel.

“False, defamatory, wildly irresponsible, and not funny,” Tapper said. He then repeated that it was “wildly irresponsible,” and that there are “lunatics out there who believe this kind of stuff.” 

Even better, he added, “I mean, Kimmel’s right when he says this is putting his family at risk.” Tapper also wondered if ESPN had a “responsibility” to “shut down” this type of conversation. He also angrily wondered if they’d continue to allow this “nitwit” Rodgers on to make dangerous jokes. 

That’s just one example of Tapper applying an entirely different standard to jokes depending on the target. There are others.

After Paul Pelosi was attacked in 2022, Tapper also had an entire show about the type of irresponsible jokes and commentary that lead to attacks on prominent figures. 

Now though, Tapper has reserved his outrage for those upset that Kimmel made a joke about Melania Trump becoming a widow. Seems extremely hypocritical, no? Especially since Tapper was so upset about Rodgers’ joke being “not funny,” and virtually nobody found Kimmel’s “widow” joke funny.

 Why would Tapper be so concerned with how people treat Kimmel?

Tapper’s clearly friends, or at least, friendly, with Kimmel, and therefore applies a different standard to him than he does to others. Not to mention the different standard he frequently applies to those on the right compared to those on the left. The issue isn’t even whether Kimmel’s joke was incitement or worthy of condemnation or removing him from his show. It’s that there is wildly disparate treatment for jokes from prominent media figures depending on the target. 

And it’s just the latest example in hypocrisy when it comes to Trump derangement.

What to know about the pro-Russian activist arrested in South Africa and wanted in Benin


DAKAR, Senegal — A pro-Russian activist accused of backing a failed coup in Benin appeared in court Wednesday in South Africa over separate charges of attempting to illegally leave that country with the help of a member of a far-right white nationalist group.

Kémi Séba, a prominent Beninese influencer, faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and immigration violations. He also faces extradition to Benin, where he was declared wanted for “inciting rebellion” after publicly backing a failed coup there last December.

Séba, whose legal name is Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi, was born in France to Beninese parents but was stripped of his French citizenship.

He remains in custody after a judge Wednesday postponed a bail hearing to May 11.

Here’s what to know about the activist:

Séba, who has some 1.5 million followers on Facebook, is the leader of Pan-Africanist Emergency, a group he founded in 2015 that describes itself as a “Black rights organization, specializing in issues related to sovereignty, neocolonialism and the promotion of social justice.”

He has also built a large following on social media using viral videos that attack France’s political and economic influence in Africa while advocating for the military juntas who seized power in the region mostly on the back of anti-French sentiments.

He has often been accused of pushing Russian propaganda in Africa, but he defends his activities as “pan-African.” Séba has publicly praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and aligned himself with pro-Russian networks tied to late Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, according to the U.S. State Department.

Séba has also met with Russian authorities on several occasions. He has denied accusations of being a Russian agent.

France convicted him multiple times for inciting racial hatred and he was stripped of his French citizenship in 2024. Shortly after, he was issued a diplomatic passport by Niger’s military junta, which made him a “special adviser” to the country’s leader, Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Beninese authorities in December declared Séba wanted after he posted a video supporting soldiers who had tried to topple the government of Benin’s President Patrice Talon. The coup collapsed within hours after loyalist forces, backed by Nigerian fighter jets and regional troops, intervened.

Séba celebrated the coup attempt in his country of citizenship as it unfolded. In a video that later went viral, he called it “the day of liberation” and praised the mutineers as “patriotic.” Benin issued an international arrest warrant for him on Dec. 12, charging him with inciting rebellion.

When he was arrested earlier this month, South African police issued a statement noting that the activist “is indeed a wanted fugitive in Benin in relation to crimes against the state.”

Séba was arrested alongside his son and a far-right South African activist during a sting operation at a Pretoria shopping center. The police said they foiled a purported plan for them to illegally cross the border into neighboring Zimbabwe and eventually reach Europe.

The man accused of arranging that crossing was François van der Merwe, a member of the Bittereinders — a South African far-right group that advocates for the creation of a whites-only Afrikaner and Boer state and says it rejects multiculturalism. He was accused of accepting roughly R250,000 ($15,000) to facilitate Séba’s cross-border movements.

The alliance between the self-described African liberation activist and a far-right white nationalist activist may be less surprising than it appears, analysts say.

Christophe Premat, a political scientist at Stockholm University, says Séba has long embraced “ethno-differentialism,” a belief in strict racial separation that he shares, from opposite ends, with the Bittereinders.

The Kremlin has also in recent years courted South African far-right groups, including those claiming to defend Afrikaner and Boer identity, according to Burgert Senekal, a research fellow at the University of the Free State in South Africa, who studied Russian information operations in the country.
