A California guaranteed income pilot program intended to lift families out of poverty failed to lead participants to long-term financial independence, according to a new study from researchers at the University of California, Davis.
The Yolo County Basic Income (YoBI) program provided “no-strings-attached” cash assistance to a highly targeted group of at-risk residents. While the payments served as a temporary lifeline, researchers found that for the “significant majority” of participants, the program was not enough to break the cycle of poverty.
“While [Basic Income] reduced some of the immediate urgency around money and allowed families some stability, most participants still had unmet financial needs,” the study reported.

The program differed from standard Universal Basic Income (UBI) by focusing exclusively on families with children under age six who were already enrolled in the state’s CalWORKs program and experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
Nolan Sullivan, the former interim director of Yolo County Health and Human Services, described the initiative in 2022 as a “super targeted basic income” (TBI).
“It’s not just like randomly distributing wealth amongst a group of people,” Sullivan said at the time. “We are laser-focused on one particular group… really trying to break the rule of generational poverty.”
Under the pilot, participants received monthly checks averaging $1,289 for a two-year period. The goal was to raise family income to 200% of the federal poverty level.

The UC Davis findings, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, highlight a recurring theme in guaranteed income experiments: the “survival mode” trap.
Participants reported that while the cash helped cover predictable expenses and pay down debt, it did not provide a cushion for the “unexpected.” Researchers noted that car repairs, medical bills, or a sudden loss of employment quickly wiped out any progress made through the monthly stipends.
One participant told researchers that without the program, they would likely be “out there looking for places to sleep.” However, the study concludes that despite these “lived experience” successes in preventing homelessness, a clear path to total financial self-sufficiency remained elusive for most.

Despite the lack of long-term financial independence cited in the Yolo County study, advocates continue to push for the expansion of such programs. Similar pilots have popped up across the country, with Cook County, Illinois, recently turning its pilot into the nation’s first permanent guaranteed income program.
Critics, however, argue that these programs create a “fiscal cliff,” where recipients struggle even harder once the temporary government funding expires.
Yolo County officials did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

As many Americans plan their summer vacations, airfares are taking off.
Airline ticket prices have jumped because of higher oil and jet fuel costs stemming from the Iran war. With prices likely to stay elevated, aviation experts urged consumers to move quickly to lock in their travel plans.
“If you haven’t booked for this summer, get busy,” Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group, told CBS News.
“Don’t wait, hoping that the fares are going to go down,” he added. “They’re not.”
Travelers eager to save money should consider leaving later in the summer, when demand is typically lower and jet fuel prices are potentially more certain, Harteveldt said.
Jet fuel prices, which account for roughly 25% to 30% airlines’ costs, were up more than $2 a gallon as of earlier this month and remain elevated. With operational costs sharply higher than before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, airlines are passing along some of those expenses to travelers.
As of April 13, the average domestic round-trip flight cost $358, up 18%, or about $55, from the same period a year ago, according to Kayak. International flights have also gotten pricier. Data from the travel booking website shows that the cost of a round-trip economy flight from the U.S. to foreign destinations has increased by an average of $115 over the last year to $1,064.
Overall, airfares were up nearly 15% in March compared to the same time last year, according to government data. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby told CBS News in an interview last month that the carrier has raised its fares by 15% to 20%.
In addition to raising ticket prices, carriers including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and United have increased their bag fees to help offset rising fuel prices, while other airlines have sought to cut costs by eliminating less profitable routes. That includes United, which plans to cut its flight volume by 5% this summer due to higher oil prices, Kirby said.

Several days later, officials identified the victim whose remains were found in the vehicle — 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, of Lake Elsinore in Riverside County.
Determining how the teen died took time, and after months of additional investigation, prosecutors announced charges against D4vd that allege her murder was a premeditated attempt to keep her from ruining his music career by exposing their underage relationship.

D4vd is formally charged with murder, continuous sexual abuse and unlawfully mutilating a body. The charges allege he committed “lewd and lascivious sexual acts” with Rivas Hernandez while she was under the age of 14, and that he killed her for financial gain “to maintain his very lucrative musical career that Celeste was threatening” to expose, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman says at a news conference announcing the charges.
A not guilty plea is entered on D4vd’s behalf during his first court appearance. His attorneys maintain his innocence, saying, “The actual evidence in this case will show that David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez and he was not the cause of her death.”
D4vd’s parents also say they “support and stand by him one hundred percent.”

A potential path has emerged to resolve Atlanta Falcons pass rusher James Pearce Jr.’s legal saga. On Thursday, the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist was granted entry into an intervention program that could allow him to avoid trial on several felony charges, his attorney, Yale Sanford, told ESPN.
Pearce faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing police and resisting arrest, along with misdemeanor stalking tied to a February incident in Florida. The stalking charge stems from alleged events involving his ex-girlfriend, WNBA star Rickea Jackson.
Under the terms of the intervention program, Pearce is prohibited from having physical contact with Jackson and must undergo therapy. The program is overseen by a third party, not the NFL.

Pearce has a court appearance early next month to finalize the details. Under Florida law, Jackson and the officers involved have the right to be consulted before the agreement is finalized.
A state attorney’s spokesperson said Jackson and law enforcement officers were consulted and that “all parties consented” to pretrial intervention as “the best way forward.”
The assistant state attorney on the case said Pearce’s status as a first-time offender was taken into consideration, adding that “it appears this incident was borne out of a mental health crisis.” Pearce does not have a history of violence.
Pearce must continue treatment, submit to random drug tests and follow the NFL’s testing protocol. Any failed or missed test could cost him his place in the pretrial intervention program, and he must also write a letter apologizing to law enforcement, the spokesperson added.
The team declined to comment on the latest development, citing the ongoing legal matter, ESPN reported. Attorneys for Jackson could not be immediately reached for comment.
Pearce is accused of ramming his luxury SUV into a vehicle driven by Jackson on Feb. 7 in Doral, Florida. He then allegedly fled from police as they attempted to arrest him.

Pearce allegedly tailed Jackson and repeatedly struck her vehicle as she drove toward the Doral police station. He spent a night in jail before his release the next day on $20,500 bond.
In February, Jackson told the court she was willing to testify.
The court granted the protection request and scheduled a May 21 hearing on a permanent injunction. The order prohibits Pearce from contacting Jackson, coming within 500 feet of her home or workplace, or within 100 feet of her vehicle.

After reaching an agreement, Pearce’s attorneys said the outcome allows him to move forward without further legal action.
“This resolution allows the matter to be addressed and fully resolved without further litigation, and he is committed to meeting all conditions. James is focused on moving forward, rejoining his teammates and the Atlanta Falcons organization as a whole, performing at the highest level, and continuing to be a team player on and off the field,” the statement read.

Also on Thursday, a spokesperson for the NFL confirmed that the league has been “closely monitoring all developments in the matter, which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.”
Pearce set the Falcons’ rookie sack record with 10.5 last season. The Los Angeles Sparks traded Jackson to the Chicago Sky earlier this month.

New mothers have enough to deal with – and then they open social media with momfluencers posting heavily curated content about their perfect lives and children to millions, often with a promotional angle.
That’s doing damage to some mothers’ mental health, researchers from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln warn — but their new study offers a solution.
A “dose of reality” can reduce shame and mitigate bad feelings mothers may develop when they see a feed full of idealized posts, the researchers say.
The findings could help mothers make better decisions about who they follow on social media, raise awareness about the impact of a momfluencer-heavy feed on their brains and expose work that platforms could do to help reduce harmful effects.
“I think these results show that platforms need to do more to avoid the echo chambers that people find themselves in,” scholar Ciera Kirkpatrick said in a statement. “For moms who are on social media, it’s very easy for them to get into these traps of just seeing idealized content.”
“If algorithms worked differently to try to bring more diversity to what people see, that would be helpful,” she added.
Right now, algorithms choose the posts people see on their apps based on their browsing history. They’re like an “invisible DJ,” University of Alabama social media expert and associate professor of marketing Parker Woodroof said in a post last year.
But that can create echo chambers that researchers at the University of Rochester say are a design choice.
“Across a series of experiments, we find that what people see online does influence their beliefs, often pulling them closer to the views they are repeatedly exposed to,” Adiba Mahbub Proma, a computer science PhD student at the university, said in February. “But when algorithms incorporate more randomization, this feedback loop weakens. Users are exposed to a broader range of perspectives and become more open to differing views.”
Still, Kirkpatrick says her findings don’t mean forgoing social media altogether until algorithms change.
“We don’t have to tell moms they can’t be on social media at all,” she said.
Her tests using a simulated social media feed with videos she curated showed that some mothers only idealized content and others saw a mix of content.
Mothers who saw only idealized posts reported feeling significantly more shame and lower positive emotion overall — although anxiety levels were not reduced in the mothers who saw both kinds of posts.
Idealized posts have also been found to increase anxiety levels and reduce confidence in parenting abilities.
“It’s very problematic, because social media really idealizes motherhood,” said Kirkpatrick. “There’s a strong relationship between shame and postpartum depression.”
Postpartum depression has risen among new mothers in the U.S. in recent years, with the rate seven times higher in 2015 than in 2000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
One in eight women with a recent live birth reported symptoms of postpartum depression, according to the latest federal research.
And mental health conditions are the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in America, with 23 percent of deaths a week to a year after pregnancy attributed to a mental health condition.
Mental health among mothers has declined since 2016, researchers at the University of Michigan and Columbia University in New York say.
That’s why updated guidance from doctors and therapists could be helpful, Kirkpatrick says, including content highlighting the downsides of social media for mothers and sharing strategies for healthier use.
Postpartum screenings could include questions about how much time mothers spend online and whether they notice changes in how they feel after using social media.
“It could be beneficial, and I hope to do a future study on it, if health care providers could utilize social media and post content so that the mothers are finding the information where they’re already at, in their feeds,” she said.
