These simple acts will improve your health more than any fitness trend

The article below is an excerpt from my newsletter: Well Enough with Harry Bullmore. To get my latest thoughts on fitness and wellbeing pop your email address into the box above to get the newsletter direct to your inbox.

I spent some time away from my desk last month and returned to a four-figure avalanche of unread emails. After spending two days wrangling my inbox into submission, I found myself feeling uncharacteristically frustrated.

There were plenty of great messages in there, but they were drowned out by subject lines covering “Pilates arms” as a status symbol, the hottest fitness trends of 2026, recovery protocols, and how to hack your body for better health.

My problem with these emails is that fitness is quite possibly the least trendy thing on earth, or at least it should be. It’s not built by constantly following the latest fad, but rather by consistently doing healthy things as often as you can.

A workout doesn’t become any more or less effective just because everyone is talking about it. There’s nothing wrong with trying something new to keep things fresh, but the stuff that works has always worked, and it will continue to do so.

The human body is something of a black box – there’s a lot we don’t know about it. But there are certain behaviours we can label as beneficial with a decent degree of confidence: moving regularly, eating fruits and vegetables and sleeping well are, arguably, the big three.

Recent research from the University of Sydney studied almost 60,000 people with a median age of 64 to find out how much they needed to change their diet, exercise and sleep routines to have a meaningful impact on their health.

The results were surprisingly achievable, particularly for those currently performing poorly in these three areas. For this group, an increase of just 15 minutes of sleep, 1.6 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise and half a serving of vegetables each day was associated with a 10 per cent lower risk of death.

Are these changes trendy? No. But are they effective? Apparently so, if done consistently and in conjunction with one another.

“We understand that making major behavioural changes on a large scale is very complex, and if you set the bar too high – such as telling people to make drastic changes to their diet, sleep for an extra hour every night or go to the gym five times per week – they may be less likely to succeed,” lead author Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis tells me.

“Our work is not about guilt-triggered behavioural change, it’s about supporting people to make whatever degree of change they can in the long term.”

Another interview I enjoyed this week also appears to support my (admittedly, fairly mild-mannered) tirade against health trends. Pain scientist and Tell Me Where It Hurts author Dr Rachel Zoffness told me that chronic pain is widely misunderstood and mistreated, and presented an intuitive alternative.

She says people usually focus on the area that hurts and the physical symptoms, but these are only part of the puzzle.

“The brain receives data from the injured body part, of course, but also from our emotions, social health and environment,” Dr Zoffness tells me, “we all know our bodies hurt more when we’re stressed, anxious or depressed.”

Everyone has things that make their pain feel worse, such as stressful days, poor sleep and even bad weather – a cocktail she describes as a “high pain recipe”. By default, then, everyone must also have a “low pain recipe”, or things that ease their pain.

What are the ingredients of a low pain recipe? You guessed it. For the most part, they are consistent, health-promoting behaviours such as managing your stress levels, spending time outdoors and socialising, alongside the obvious sleep, diet and exercise factors.

And finally this week, I wanted to hone in on the exercise element and share a recent chat I had with Marchon Victoria head coach Paddy James about the most efficient way to build full-body muscle.

Many people assume that, to achieve this, you need to sacrifice an hour each day. But in Paddy’s considerable experience, two weekly full-body strength training sessions, each lasting no more than 45 minutes, are enough for most people to see impressive results. This approach is also far easier to stay consistent with – and consistency is the key to a lasting uptick in your health and fitness.

That brings us to our weekly conclusion: what thread connects this trio of pieces? It’s certainly not trendiness or flashy, buzzworthy advice. Instead, they all champion basic healthy behaviours, done consistently. Better yet, they suggest that a couple of small positive changes can go a long way in improving your health.

Cat missing for seven years finds way back to family after 2,500-mile adventure

Cat missing for seven years finds way back to family after 2,500-mile adventure

A family has reunited with their beloved cat seven years after he went missing in California.

Amber Davidson and her kids adopted their pet cat, Dodger, in 2016 from the Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center in Clovis, California, according to local news outlet Your Central Valley.

But when preparing for a cross-country move in 2018, Dodger disappeared.

Davidson planned her family’s move to Florida after the father of her children died. Of course, Dodger was supposed to be moving too, with Davidson having planned for a friend to transport the cat, along with the family’s belongings, to Florida.

Dodger never made the move and has been missing ever since — but that all changed when Davidson recently got an unexpected email.

“It was like 11 p.m., and I get this email saying Dodger has been scanned into Fresno TNR,” she told Your Central Valley, referring to Trap-Neuter-Return, a non-profit organization focused on reducing the number of free-roaming cats in Fresno, California.

Sydney Sherman, who works at Fresno TNR, told the publication that Dodger was found in Madera, California, and brought in for neutering. However, veterinarians realized he’d already been neutered and had a microchip. Once Sherman scanned the chip, she learned that the cat belonged to a family that no longer lived in California.

“I was like, oh my gosh, where do these people live, this isn’t a 559 area code,” she said, before learning that Davidson and her family now live 2,500 miles away in Georgia.

The pair began making plans to reunite Dodger and his family, with Sherman telling Davidson that she was going to be in Florida in March.

“I was like, well, I’m going to a wedding in Florida on March 24, I can try to bring him to you guys if you can meet me in Florida,” Sherman said. The reunion plans were then set in place, with Davidson and her family driving seven hours to Florida to see Dodger for the first time in seven years.

“That moment, of ‘He’s finally home, he gets to be with his people again,” Sherman said. “It’s very special.”

“When we were walking away, Schylar was like, ‘Mom, you did so good, you didn’t cry,’” Davidson added, referring to her son.

This isn’t the first time that a pet has made headlines for traveling across state lines to reunite with loved ones. In October, beloved calico cat Francine returned to her home in a Richmond, Virginia, Lowe’s store after she was missing for a month.

Francine, formerly a stray, was discovered at a company distribution center in Garysburg, North Carolina, having hitched a ride on a truck. Two Richmond Lowe’s employees made a 90-minute drive to retrieve her. She was back on duty the following day, playing with customers, posing for photos and enjoying affection.

Before she went missing, Francine spent much of her time either at the customer service desk or in the store’s seasonal area.

Alejandro Garnacho: What is going on with Chelsea winger?

Alejandro Garnacho: What is going on with Chelsea winger?

Garnacho simply answered “no” when asked in December whether he had any regrets about the manner of his Manchester United exit, having left under a cloud.

In a recent interview with Premier League Productions, he said he “loved” United, had only good memories of his time there, and reflected on scoring for them in the 2024 FA Cup final success over Manchester City, who visit Chelsea on Sunday.

However, Garnacho also addressed the controversy surrounding his departure.

“I remember that, in the last six months, I was not playing like before at Manchester United,” he said. “I started to be on the bench. It’s not such a bad thing – I was only 20 years old – but in my mind it was like I had to play every game.

“In my mind, maybe it was also on me. I started to do some bad things. But it was just a moment in life and sometimes you have to make decisions. I am really proud to be here [at Chelsea] and still in the Premier League at a club like this.

“About United, I have nothing wrong to say about the club, anyone at the club or my team-mates. It was just a moment that changed and life continues. I have no regrets.”

The controversies he referred to included accusations of ill-discipline, a lack of professionalism and a series of public social media posts by him and his brother. These issues contributed to his exit under former boss Ruben Amorim, with Garnacho running down his contract and securing a move to Chelsea.

Since arriving Stamford Bridge, the forward has repeatedly said he is “happy here”, praising vice‑captain and compatriot Enzo Fernandez as being “like my dad”, having spoken in the same way about United captain Bruno Fernandes.

He has acknowledged the need to improve quietly on the training pitch and has been working in detail on his defensive output.

The door remains open for a late‑season impact, with rival left‑wing option Jamie Gittens sidelined for three months because of recurring hamstring injuries.

And, despite it not being reflected in team selections, boss Rosenior praised Garnacho last month when he said: “He’s got huge ability and potential. For any young player, the biggest thing to be challenged on is consistency.

“But he’s shown really good signs – not just in training, but in meetings – that he’s on a really good track.”

Asked why opposition fans often boo Garnacho, he added: “Maybe it’s because people judge a book by its cover.”

Garnacho told Premier League Productions this week he was aware some people think he is “arrogant” and his bleached blond hair and tattoos attract comments both “good and bad”, but he is just a “normal boy”.

In terms of a mooted move this summer, Chelsea deny any decisions have been made, despite links to a loan stint with Argentine giants River Plate.

That said, Garnacho cost £40m and is not among the club’s highest earners, making him affordable for many European sides, while Chelsea also have plans to add another attacker alongside Sporting’s Geovany Quenda, who was signed in March 2025 to join once this season is over.

It means some of the current squad will inevitably be sold this summer.

Eric Swalwell accused of paying nanny with campaign funds while she lacked work authorization

Eric Swalwell accused of paying nanny with campaign funds while she lacked work authorization

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., is facing allegations he violated immigration and employment laws to keep a live-in nanny in the U.S., including claims he paid her with campaign funds while she lacked work authorization, according to two recently filed complaints.

A complaint filed Tuesday with the Department of Labor alleges that Swalwell and his wife, Brittany Swalwell, lied to keep their babysitter, Amanda Barbosa, employed, according to The New York Post.

In a separate complaint filed in February with the Department of Homeland Security by California filmmaker and political activist Joel Gilbert, first reported by The Post, Swalwell is accused of paying his nanny with campaign funds for roughly two years while she allegedly did not have valid work authorization.

“Barbosa appears in numerous social media photos with the Swalwell family throughout 2023 and 2024, indicating continued close association and ongoing childcare responsibilities despite the absence of known lawful work authorization,” the DHS complaint states.

Barbosa was first hired by Swalwell — who is running for California governor — in 2021 after coming to the U.S. from Brazil on an au pair visa, according to The Post.

Barbosa was paid $3,914 in campaign funds in 2021 and received $46,930 in 2022, according to Federal Election Commission data.

According to a labor certification application reviewed by The Post, Swalwell began the process of sponsoring Barbosa for a green card in December 2022 as her visa was set to expire.

Barbosa later enrolled at a community college and was not allowed to work off campus under student visa rules, The Post reported. However, social media photos appear to show her interacting with Swalwell’s children at family events throughout 2023 and 2024.

FEC records reviewed by the outlet show that $52,262 in campaign expenses for “childcare” were reimbursed to Swalwell, which the complaint alleges was a workaround to keep Barbosa employed while she was not authorized to work in the U.S.

The Department of Labor told The Post the labor certification was approved in 2024. In 2025, Barbosa received $38,905 in campaign funds from Swalwell, according to FEC data.

The San Francisco Chronicle first reported allegations from a former staffer, and three additional women later spoke to CNN with misconduct claims.

Swalwell has denied the allegations and faced calls to drop his gubernatorial bid.

“They are absolutely false. They did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have.”

Trump takes the spotlight at UFC 327 in Miami, greeting Rogan and Rubio

Trump takes the spotlight at UFC 327 in Miami, greeting Rogan and Rubio

MIAMI — The main attraction early at UFC 327 on Saturday night wasn’t any of the fighters, but President Donald Trump.

Trump entered the Kaseya Center shortly after 9 p.m. to watch the light heavyweight fight between Jiri Prochazka and Carlos Ulberg. He was accompanied by Dana White, the president of Ultimate Fighting Championship, and several members of the Trump family.

As a Kid Rock song blasted from the speakers, Trump walked to his seat where Secretary of State Marco Rubio was waiting. Also nearby was Sergio Gor, the U.S. ambassador to India.

Trump shook hands with attendees on the floor and made a point of greeting Joe Rogan, the podcaster who also works as a UFC color commentator.

Trump gave several smiles to the cameras.

Earlier, on his way to the arena, Trump’s Truth Social account posted an advertisement that appeared to be for a UFC fight at the White House on June 14, on what would be Trump’s 80th birthday.

A crowd of onlookers could be seen filming the presidential motorcade upon arrival.

With former champion Alex Pereira vacating the belt to move up and challenge for the interim heavyweight crown at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House, Ulberg (14-1-0) earned his spot across Prochazka (32-5-1) in the main event of Saturday’s card.

In the co-main event, Azamat Murzakanov (17-0-0) used a right roundhouse to the head to drop Paulo Costa (15-5-0) and end the bout at the 1:23 mark of the third round.

Murzakanov stepped onto the apron of the Octagon after his victory to shake Trump’s hand, and the president praised him. Murzakanov acknowledged Trump during his post-fight interview with Rogan.

Josh Hokit (9-0-0) and Curtis Blaydes (19-6-0) battered each other in the slugfest of the night, with Trump excitedly watching the heavyweights as fans chanted “This is awesome!” as the fighters bloodied each other’s faces. Hokit won by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

In a light heavyweight clash, Dominick Reyes (16-5-0) defeated Johnny Walker (22-10-0) with a split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Featherweight Cub Swanson (32-14-0) ended a celebrated career with a devastating first-round TKO of Nate Landwehr (18-9-0). The 42-year-old Swanson overmatched Landwehr with a bevy of punches to the head before referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight with 54 seconds left in the opening round.
