First case of severe mpox disease reported in major city: ‘Life-threatening’

The first case of severe mpox (formerly monkeypox) has been identified in New York City, according to an advisory issued by the NYC Health Department.

One resident has tested positive for mpox clade I, one of the two main genetic groups (clades) of the mpox virus, which causes the illness.

“Clade I causes more severe symptoms and can be life-threatening,” Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, told Fox News Digital. “It spreads via direct contact or sex, and kissing, and very close respiratory droplets, but not over longer distances by respiratory spread.”

Clade II was the strain that caused a 2022 global outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Survival rates for this type are more than 99.9%.

Clade I, which was responsible for the 2024 outbreak in the DRC and Africa, is known to cause more severe illness and deaths.

The New York City patient recently traveled out of the country, the advisory states. “This appears to have come here from travel and has not spread locally,” Siegel noted.

There is no known local transmission of mpox clade I in New York City and the risk remains low for local residents, according to NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin.

“The NYC Health Department recommends that New Yorkers who are at risk for mpox receive and complete the two-dose vaccine series that works to prevent mpox,” he said in a statement.

To help prevent transmission, the CDC recommends vaccination for men who are gay, bisexual or have sex with men, are age 18 or older, and have other specific risks. Those who plan to travel to areas where clade I mpox is spreading should also seek the vaccine.

People who may have been in close contact with an infected person should get the vaccine within 14 days.

As with other viral infections, those who are immunocompromised or very young are at the greatest risk of severe infection.

Vaccination can help reduce the chances of infection and also makes symptoms less severe, according to experts. The two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine is the most common type of protection. Those who have had mpox do not need to be vaccinated.

Mpox symptoms include a sometimes painful, blistery rash on various parts of the body, fever, chills, exhaustion, muscle aches, headache, swollen lymph nodes and respiratory symptoms, according to the CDC. These symptoms usually emerge one to three weeks after exposure.

In rare cases, mpox can lead to eye infections, severe rash, painful skin lesions and neurological problems.

Treatment for mpox involves supportive care to manage symptoms. In severe cases, patients may receive TPOXX (tecovirimat), an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by viruses related to smallpox, including mpox, Siegel noted.

Costco recalls meatloaf in more than two dozen states due to salmonella risk


Costco is recalling a meatloaf and potato meal kit in nearly 30 states because it may be contaminated with salmonella, the retailer said in a notice to customers.

The product, called Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze, has sell-by dates of March 5 to March 16 and was sold at Costco locations in 26 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. 

Costco said customers who bought the product should not consume it and can return it to a Costco location for a refund. 

The announcement came after one of its ingredient suppliers, Griffith Foods, recalled one of the ingredients used in the meatloaf due to possible salmonella contamination.

Salmonella is a bacterial disease typically caused by contaminated water or food and can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. In serious cases, the disease can be fatal.

No injuries or illnesses associated with the recalled product have been reported so far, according to Costco.

Major UK car park firm collapses into administration


NCP, one of the UK’s largest car park operators, has entered administration, placing 682 jobs in jeopardy.

The company, which manages approximately 340 sites nationwide, has struggled with declining occupancy and mounting losses since the Covid-19 pandemic.

PwC has been appointed as administrator for the business.

Despite the move, all NCP car parks will continue to operate as normal, and staff will remain employed while administrators assess the company’s options.

The firm’s financial difficulties stem from a significant post-pandemic drop in demand for parking, which has failed to rebound to pre-Covid levels.

This downturn has been particularly acute in city centre and commuter locations, attributed to shifts in commuting and consumer driving patterns, which have affected car park occupancy.

NCP also cited challenges posed by the high costs associated with long-term inflexible leases on sites that have become unprofitable.

Some or all of NCP may be put up for sale as one of the options to secure its future.

Administrators said NCP will be assessing the viability of each location, and some sites may need to be closed as a result.

Zelf Hussain, joint administrator and partner for PwC, said: “NCP has faced a challenging trading environment over several years, with changing consumer behaviours impacting volumes, and a high fixed cost base leading to trading losses.

“Our priority on appointment is to ensure continuity of service while we undertake a detailed review of the business.

“All sites are open, staff remain in post, and trading continues as normal.

“We will be engaging with landlords, employees and other stakeholders as we explore all options, including the potential sale of all or part of the business, to secure the best possible outcome for creditors.”

NCP was founded in London in 1931 and is owned by the Japanese firm Park24.

It operates about 340 car parks across the UK, including in major towns and city centres, airports, hospitals and train stations.

Prices differ at each site, but some central London locations can cost up to £60 for 24 hours of parking.

Latest accounts filed at Companies House show that it made a pre-tax loss of £28.2m in the year to 30 September 2023 and was £22.5m in the red the previous year.

MIAMI — Major League Baseball’s experiment of a robot umpire technology system allowing challenges to checked swing calls is moving up from Class A to Triple-A.

MLB will also test moving second base slightly to position it entirely within the infield, which would reduce by 9 inches the distance between first and second, and between second and third, according to a memorandum sent to teams last week.

It will try out reducing permissible disengagements by pitchers from two to one per plate appearance and stricter limits on batter timeouts and resetting the pitch clock for issues with PitchCom, the electronic signaling device that has been used since 2023.

There will also be a test allowing starting pitchers to re-enter games in the lowest level of the minor leagues. It’s not expected this test will lead to MLB implementation, but it’s being considered for the minors to improve development and player health by allowing more flexible workload management.

MLB’s Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System, the so-called robot umpire, launches when the season starts March 25 following tests that started in the minors in 2019. A batter, catcher or pitcher can appeal a ball/strike call by the human umpire under a system in which each team has two challenges and keeps its challenge if successful. Additional challenges become available to teams in extra innings.

An experiment began last May 20 in the Class A Florida State League allowing challenges to checked swing calls, and the test was extended to the Arizona Fall League.

Starting on May 5, the checked swing test will take expand to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League in additional to the FSL.

“The batter, pitcher or catcher may also appeal the umpire’s decision regarding whether the batter swung at a pitch,” according to the memo from MLB vice president of on-field strategy Joe Martinez to general managers and other club executives. “A swing will be considered to have occurred if the maximum angle between the bat head and the bat handle exceeds 45 degrees.”

Martinez said the strikeout rate was cut by 3% during last year’s testing.

In addition, umpires at games in the Triple-A International League will be instructed to apply the 45-degree threshold for determining swings starting May 5. The Official Baseball Rules do not specify a standard for checked swings, stating only: “A strike is a legal pitch when so called by the umpire, which is struck at by the batter and is missed.”

Since 1976, the rules have said: “The manager or the catcher may request the plate umpire to ask his partner for help on a half swing when the plate umpire calls the pitch a ball, but not when the pitch is called a strike.”

Starting pitchers will be allowed to re-enter a game after being removed at the Arizona Complex League, Florida Complex League and Dominican Summer League. A removed starting pitcher is eligible to return if he threw at least 25 pitches during the inning he was removed, can return only at the start of an inning and may re-enter only once.

MLB enlarged bases to 18-inch squares from 15 in 2023, a change the led to more stolen bases because of a decreased distance of 4 1/2 inches between first and second, and second and third.

Second base has been centered on the exact spot of second, but the experiment in the International League will place it “entirely within the perimeter of the infield diamond during the second half” of the season.

Citing an increase in the average time of a nine-inning game from 2 hours, 36 minutes in 2024 to 2:38 last year and a decrease in stole base attempt success rate from 80.2% in 2023 to 77.8% last year, MLB will experiment with changes to pitch clock rules.

Teams at Triple-A will be assessed a mound visit if play is stopped for a PitchCom problem, and if a team is out of visits an automatic ball will be charged.

At all levels, the clock will not stop when a catcher leaves the catcher’s box to give defensive signals, and players other than the pitcher and coaches must leave the mound before the clock on mound visits runs out. A violation would result in an automatic ball.

At High A, batters will not be allowed to request time if the bases are empty and in Class A no timeouts will be allowed. Exceptions will be allowed for brush backs, possible injuries or equipment problems.

Allowed disengagements by pitchers from the rubber will be lowered from two to one at Double-A.

The NFL and Paramount Skydance‘s renewal talks on a deal to keep the league’s Sunday games on CBS are beginning to take shape, CNBC has learned.

NFL and CBS executives are negotiating a price increase, with a bid-ask spread midpoint around 50% or 60%, according to two people familiar with the negotiations, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private. CBS currently pays around $2.1 billion a year, on average, for its Sunday afternoon games, CNBC has previously reported. A 50% increase would mean CBS would pay more than $3 billion in its next deal.

In return for the increased revenue, the NFL would eliminate the opt-out clause after the 2029-30 season that it put in its original deal with Paramount, part of an 11-year agreement that runs through the end of the 2033-34 season. That clause would have given the league the chance to walk away early.

CBS would begin paying the new fee as soon as next season for the next eight years for the same package of games.

Paramount’s adjusted projection for its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for 2026 is $3.6 billion. If Paramount’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery is approved by regulators, the combined company would have an adjusted EBITDA projection of $18 billion, Paramount Chief Financial Officer Dennis Cinelli told investors this month.

“We have a phenomenal relationship with the NFL, and we anticipate that continuing for the foreseeable future,” Paramount CEO David Ellison told CNBC earlier this month. “They are one of our most important partners, and we plan for them to stay one of our most important partners, having just delivered a historic season in partnership with them. And, you know, ongoing negotiations, we’re not really in a position where we can comment. I promise we’ll share something as soon as we have something to say.”

Comcast‘s NBCUniversal, Amazon Prime Video and Fox are also subject to the 2029-30 opt-out clause in their deals. Disney‘s ESPN and ABC have until 2031.

The league has chosen to begin negotiating with Paramount’s CBS before any of its other media partners because a change-of-control provision — stemming from Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount Global — allows the NFL to break its deal by 2027.

The NFL might negotiate with Fox next after CBS because the terms of the deal should be similar — both companies own Sunday afternoon packages, one of the people familiar with the matter said.

Fox currently pays slightly more than CBS for its package of games — about $2.2 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. Fox will “certainly look to [be] continuing that mutually beneficial relationship going forward” with the NFL, but it hasn’t had any “material conversations” on a renewal yet, CEO Lachlan Murdoch said earlier this month at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.

The NFL also hasn’t begun material discussions with Amazon, NBC or Disney, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private. It’s unclear if the league would look to push forward with a similar 50% increase for all three of those packages.

Some executives at NBC and at Disney believe the relative strengths of their packages — Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football — have diminished as the NFL has given Amazon better games for its Thursday Night Football in recent years, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because of privacy concerns.

ESPN already pays $2.7 billion for Monday Night Football. A 50% increase would mean ESPN would pay more than $4 billion for that package — a number Disney would likely balk at, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the issue is private.

Downstream implications

The timing and scope of the NFL’s new deals could have a significant effect on the value of other sports’ rights in the coming years.

The NHL currently has TV deals with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, which expire after the 2028 season. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has had a number of conversations about renewing a deal before the NFL, according to two people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the talks are private. Still, he will likely have to wait until Paramount’s deal to acquire WBD closes before inking a new agreement.

“As with an ongoing relationship, you’re always talking about the future, and from our standpoint it’s not in the context of the NFL,” said NHL spokesman Jon Weinstein.

Murdoch said last month that Fox would have to “rebalance” its sports portfolio once it pays the NFL.

Versant CEO Mark Lazarus said earlier this month he’s “prepared for the sports landscape to be shifting,” given the outsize cost of the NFL. That could allow Versant, which owns the USA Network and other cable channels, to buy rights to sports such as the NHL or MLB “that we might not have otherwise gotten involved with,” he said.

A school pupil and a student from the University of Kent have died following a meningitis outbreak.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed it was notified of 13 cases in the Canterbury area between Friday and Sunday.

A school pupil, who was in Year 13 at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham, became the second student whose life was claimed by the outbreak when they died over the weekend.

They are reported to have died on Saturday, while the other person who died attended the University of Kent.

Some students at the University of Kent are in hospital, while others have been given antibiotics, and long queues could be seen at the university Senate building on Monday morning as pupils waited for the drugs.

Authorities are yet to identify the specific strain of the disease responsible for the cluster of infections.

But what is meningitis, what are the symptoms, and why are young people at risk?

What is meningitis and what causes it?

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Bacterial meningitis is rarer but more serious than viral meningitis.

It can affect anyone but is more common in babies, children, teenagers and young adults.

Meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly, and can lead to life-threatening sepsis and permanent damage to the brain or nerves.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of meningitis and sepsis can include a high temperature, cold hands and feet, vomiting, confusion, muscle and joint pain, pale, mottled or blotchy skin, spots or a rash, a headache, a stiff neck, aversion to bright lights, being very sleepy and seizures.

Symptoms can appear in any order and some may not appear at all.

Why are young people at risk?

According to Meningitis Now, one in four 15 to 19-year-olds carry meningococcal bacteria in the back of their throats, compared to one in 10 of the UK population.

People can carry this harmlessly without becoming unwell, but it can be passed from person to person by coughing, sneezing and kissing.

Increased social interaction in this age group means the bacteria can be passed on more easily.

In universities, students can be more vulnerable because of living in more “cramped” housing or halls of residence. Young people also come together from all over the world to live, study and socialise.

What causes these outbreaks and how serious are they?

Outbreaks can happen when a particular meningococcal strain enters a community where people are mixing closely.

Universities which include halls of residence, parties, and large social groups, can help the bacteria to spread more easily.

But the risk to the general public in Kent is low, with people at the highest risk usually close contacts of cases.

How is meningitis treated?

Hospital treatment is recommended by the NHS for all cases of bacterial meningitis.

Treatments include antibiotics and fluids administered directly into a vein, oxygen if there are breathing difficulties, and in some cases steroid medication to prevent swelling around the brain.

Patients may need to stay in hospital for a few days or weeks.

In cases of mild meningitis, patients may be sent home if tests confirm it is viral, which usually gets better on its own. Most patients start to feel better within seven to 10 days.

But severe viral meningitis may also be treated in hospital.

What action is being taken to stop the spread in Kent?

Close contacts of the University of Kent students affected will be given antibiotics.

On Sunday, the UKHSA said specialists were interviewing affected individuals and their families to “help identify all close contacts and arrange antibiotics to limit spread”.

The agency had also worked with the University of Kent to provide advice letters to all 16,000 students, providing information on recent cases, the signs and symptoms of the illness, how to obtain antibiotics, and what to do if they felt unwell.

Are there vaccines available for meningitis?

There are two vaccines for meningitis.

The MenACWY vaccine is a single dose jab that protects against four strains of meningococcal bacteria.

It is offered to teenagers in school and is also available to those entering university, up to the age of 25.

Experts say that this jab is “highly effective at protecting against invasive disease”.

But Andrew Preston, a professor of microbial pathogenicity at University of Bath, said that uptake among teenagers was about 73%.

“So there are a lot of unvaccinated students given the size of the student cohort,” he said.

Elsewhere, there are the MenB, 6-in-1, pneumococcal and MMRV vaccines for babies and children.

What should you do if you think you have meningitis?

The NHS recommends that people call 999 for an ambulance or go to their nearest A&E.

People are advised to trust their instincts, as someone with meningitis or sepsis can get a lot worse very quickly.

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles has been diagnosed with “early stage breast cancer” but remains committed to her job while undergoing treatment, President Donald Trump said Monday.

Wiles, 68, “has decided to take on this challenge, IMMEDIATELY, as opposed to waiting,” Trump said in a Truth Social post revealing the diagnosis.

She has an “excellent” prognosis and will be spending “virtually full time at the White House,” Trump said in the post.

“Her Strength and her Commitment to continue doing the job she loves, and does so well, while undergoing treatment, tells you everything you need to know about her,” he said.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for additional information on Wiles.

She appeared next to Trump at the White House later Monday, during a meeting of the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The board, which has been stocked with Trump’s appointees including Wiles, had convened to vote on plans to close the center for renovations starting on July 6, The New York Times reported.

Trump said at the event that Wiles is dealing with a “minor difficulty” and reiterated that she will be addressing it “immediately.”

Wiles oversaw Trump’s winning 2024 presidential campaign and has wielded major influence in his second administration.

While often seen alongside Trump at public events, Wiles rarely speaks on camera or grants on-the-record interviews. However, she participated in a series of interviews in 2025 with Vanity Fair that revealed strikingly blunt assessments of Trump and his top aides.

She told the outlet, among other things, that Trump has “an alcoholic’s personality” and said he has engaged in legal “retribution” against his enemies as president.

After the interviews were published in December, Trump said he stood by Wiles and a slew of top administration officials leapt to her defense while attacking Vanity Fair. Wiles herself called the articles a “hit piece.”
